What if the US refused to use it's military to secure Saudi Arabia's interests and fight it's wars?

What would happen?

We know that SA has no problem allowing Israel to deter common threats.

Is it possible that if the US wasn't involved, that a mutually necessary alliance would be forged between Israel and SA?

Only if the Saudis want a civil war, and at the same time a war with the All of the Muslim States in the region.

Really bad plan.

The entire ME erupting in blood and fire spells disaster for the world's industrialized economies.

If anyone even thinks of touch Saudi Arabia....you will have full weight of United States military bearing down on you.

No need for Israel to involve itself. But having said that it is my opinion that Israel is not a threat to SA, but across the gulf is the threat.....which has been a threat for 14 hundred years from my understanding.

Israel would never initiate an attack against Saudi Arabia.

The flipside however is that if Saudi Arabia joined with Israel in a combined OP against Iran, every other power in the Islamic world would combine against Israel and the Saudis and there would be a bloody rebellion in Saudi Arabia at the same time.

SharkLaser writes "Last week it was announced that Google has renewed their search deal with Mozilla. The amount Google paid to Mozilla was surprising: $300 million per year, despite the slightly falling market share of Firefox. Many took this as charity, and for the purpose of advancing the web. Now sources in the bidding process have revealed that Google's main rival in the bid was Microsoft's Bing, along with Yahoo. This bidding war was costly to Google, which is now paying 300% of what they used to, just to be Firefox's default search provider. Mozilla veteran Asa Dotzler is also giving insight into the deal between Google and Mozilla. 'Google started out as a search company. But that's not what they are today. Google's primary business is advertising. Google brought in $9.7B in revenues in Q3'11. 96% of that revenue was from ad sales. Not all traffic to Google ads is 'organic' though. To help drive ad sales, Google pays for traffic to their ads. They paid out $2.21 billion, or 24% of their ad revenues in 'Traffic Acquisition Costs.' That money goes to revenue shares with their AdSense partners and to 'distribution partners' ? presumably browser makers, PC OEMs, and mobile OEMs and operators.' Google also pays shareware and freeware distributors to bundle Chrome and Google toolbar with their programs and games."

Victoria Jackson Hates Muslims, Loves Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum

Former SNL cast member Victoria Jackson is never one to hide her staunchly conservative political views. Her latest rant surrounds Muslim infiltration of the U.S.

Jackson, on her web talk show this week, claimed the United States is being overtaken by radical Muslims bent on bringing the nation under Sharia law.

Seriously. Citing insider knowledge, she said the following:

Victoria Jackson Pic

"I just went to a briefing in Washington DC, across the street from the Capitol, at the Longworth building at 8:30 am two days ago and it changed my life."

"For six hours, I saw pictures and names and dates and facts and Islamic law books and Korans, Surahs for six hours and they proved to me that the Muslim Brotherhood has infiltrated our highest positions in government and this is serious."

"Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum are the only GOP candidates to acknowledge the above facts and warn against the present threat of Islamic Law replacing the U.S. Constitution. Very few people in America are informed and educated as I am."

There you have it folks. "Few people are as informed and educated" as Victoria Jackson.

Perhaps she means that ironically, as in she is so ridiculously misinformed, paranoid and uneducated that few people could ever stoop to her level.

Eh, probably not. She also thinks Glee makes kids gay. But we need to subscribe to her Podcast for the unintentional comedy factor alone.

Driver Profile and Cheap Car Insurance - Guitars are my Passion

Cheap car insurance will disappear during the quote process if you the driver doesn?t have a perfect driving record. Each insurance company will compare risk factors related to driving habits and then give you a price on a policy. Some of the best car insurance companies will refuse to cover a driver with multiple traffic violations and accidents in order to obtain cheap car insurance. The driver?s record has a greater influence on car insurance premiums than anything else.

?

Although some may differ in price; every car insurance company looks favorably on good credit ratings. The company will award a discount to what they see as mature behavior. The actual percentage of discounts is different with each car insurance company. Staying focused on good credit practices and let those practices be your guide to cheap car insurance.

?

Most car insurance carriers will reward drivers that take training courses to develop their driving skills. A number of cheap car insurance companies may offer a 20 percent discount for attending a class.

Arab monitors face crowds, blasts in second Syria tour (Reuters)

BEIRUT, Dec 28, Reuters - ? Arab League monitors in Syria faced angry crowds, gunfire and explosions during their second visit to Homs, the heart of a nine-month revolt against President Bashar al-Assad, online videos appeared to show on Wednesday.

Activists uploaded footage on the Internet showing crowds surrounding a monitoring team's car on Wednesday shouting "those who kill their people are traitors." In another video, orange-vested monitors rushed behind a concrete building amid heavy shooting and blasts.

The pictures were impossible to verify and most foreign journalists are banned from working in Syria.

The Arab League observers are in Syria to determine if Assad is keeping his promise to push through a peace plan and end his crackdown on the revolt that has pushed the country towards civil war.

Homs has been mired in violence during the uprising. City neighborhoods have been pounded with army tank fire and mortar rounds in recent months. Armed clashes have increasingly overshadowed the peaceful protests that began in March.

The head of the Arab League mission earlier said he saw "nothing frightening" on his first trip to Homs on Tuesday. But France called the comment from Sudanese General Mustafa Dabi premature and urged Syria to give his team full access.

"When you were in Homs yesterday 15 people died. We're not benefitting from your presence," one activist, named as Khaled Abu Salah, shouted at the mission in a video of its second trip on Wednesday in the Homs neighborhood of Baba Amr.

The Arab League has said the mission needs about a week to determine whether Assad has stuck to his promise to withdraw tanks and troops, free prisoners and start a dialogue with the opposition.

General Dabi earlier called on activists to give his team more time.

"Remember, this was only the first day and it will need investigation. We have 20 people who will be there for a long time," Dabi told Reuters, speaking from Damascus.

Washington also urged patience. "It was just Day One," State Department spokesman Mark Toner said. "We need to let this mission get up and running. Let them do their job and then let them give their judgment."

Assad has warned against foreign intervention which he says could spark a regional crisis. Assad says Syria is fighting foreign-backed Islamist terrorists who have killed more than 2,000 of its security forces.

State television on Wednesday said Damascus had freed 755 people detained in the unrest "whose hands were not stained with Syrian blood." Thousands remain in detention.

U.S.-based Human Rights Watch accused Syrian authorities of transferring hundreds of detainees to military sites off-limits to Arab League monitors and urged the observers to insist on full access to all sites used for detention.

Unobstructed access and uncensored testimony are crucial to the Arab League's mission. The monitors hit a snag on Wednesday when locals in Baba Amr refused to speak with the observers in the presence of a Syrian army colonel.

The monitors later returned unescorted but had to scrap an effort to check an area where residents believed detainees were being hidden, because gunfire erupted nearby, activists told Reuters by telephone.

CLASHES RISE AHEAD OF MONITORS

As the monitors toured Homs, other hotspots saw fresh violence, said witnesses and activists.

A video sent by rebels in Deraa province showed gunmen with faces swathed in checkered kerchiefs, firing automatic rifles at a convoy of security force buses. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said four government soldiers died in the ambush.

Security forces fired live ammunition and tear gas at an anti-Assad rally in Hama, another major flashpoint of unrest north of Homs, said activists. At least one person died and seven were wounded, they added.

Al Jazeera television showed gunfire, curls of black smoke and men marching down a street chanting, "Where are the Arab monitors?" One man was bleeding from the neck.

The delegation plans to send teams to central Hama, southern Deraa and northern Idlib on Thursday.

Despite the hitches, many Homs residents were pleased with what they said was a more diligent second tour by monitors, and relieved to have a respite from days of heavy gun battles.

"This has been less killing and shooting than usual so I'm feeling more relaxed," joked activist Mohammed Saleh.

In other video clips of the monitoring mission, observers scribbled notes as residents named missing loved ones and showed the team the body of a lifeless young boy shot in the back. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says three people died from gunshots in Homs on Wednesday.

RUSSIA PRODS ASSAD TO OPEN UP

Russia, one of Assad's few remaining allies and Syria's primary weapons supplier, urged Damascus to let the observers move around the country freely.

"The mission should be able to visit any part of the country, any towns or villages, and come up with its own independent, objective opinion about what is happening and where," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

Activists say about a third of the estimated 5,000 people killed in unrest in Syria since March died in Homs. Dozens have been killed in the past week alone and thousands arrested in the months before the 22-state Arab League was invited in.

The monitors represent the first international intervention on the ground in Syria since the revolt began. Protesters hope their final report will nudge the world into action against Assad.

New year brings new risks for California politicians

Ask most people what's significant about Dec. 30 and you may get a puzzled look. But politics junkies know that's the official start of California's next election season.

It opens on a markedly altered stage, set with a new primary system and different voting districts. Lingering uncertainties about some of those districts, thanks to a federal lawsuit and a possible state referendum aimed at overturning them, are adding to the drama.

Not since term limits for state offices took effect in the mid-1990s have California politicians faced such risks to their careers.

"There are more wild cards in the 2012 elections than we've seen" in nearly two decades, said Thad Kousser, a UC San Diego political scientist.

Friday is the first day candidates for legislative and congressional races can take out papers to run. But given the new wrinkles in the state election system, hundreds of candidates started raising money and campaigning months ago, some even before the redistricting commission finished the new political maps.

"There's been a lot of work done [by candidates] trying to strategically position themselves into a district," said consultant Paul Mitchell, who advises politicians on redistricting. To some, early announcements seemed "like a big advantage."

But there are still opportunities for those who hadn't made up their minds so soon, he added: "We still see some people running around looking for districts, and we still have some retirements and [contest] shifts to go."

Those who wish to collect nomination signatures rather than pay a filing fee to get on the June primary ballot have until Feb. 23 to do so. After that, the filing period ends March 9 for most races.

In the new "top-two" primary, the first- and second-place finishers, regardless of political party, will go head to head in November. Candidates may state on the ballot that they belong to a state-recognized political party or that they have "no party preference."

That change and the new voting districts, drawn for the first time by a citizens group instead of by lawmakers protecting incumbents, were promoted as ways to help end partisan gridlock. The combination, proponents said, would lead to more competitive races, produce more moderate officeholders and reduce the extremism that has bedeviled Sacramento and Washington.

But voters, who approved both new systems, may be disappointed if they expect significantly more competition between the main parties, experts say. That's partly because Democrats account for nearly half of the voters in California, and there are too few Republicans to compete in many areas.

Another factor is what Mitchell calls "residential sorting." Like-minded voters tend to live in the same areas. Liberal Democrats cluster in urban centers, and conservative Republicans tend to dominate in more rural areas.

Still, it wouldn't take many more swing districts to change the dynamic in Sacramento, said Dan Schnur, director of the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at USC and a former Republican advisor.

Even a dozen or so competitive districts in the 120-member Legislature "can create some common ground that makes it easier for the two parties to work together," Schnur said.

He and other politics experts agreed that the unknown factors in the new election environment will help keep officeholders and candidates on their toes.

"The combination of redistricting and the open primary is going to produce unpredictability, and politicians faced with unpredictability tend to be nervous politicians," Schnur said. "And nervous politicians tend to be responsive politicians.

"Regardless of how either of these reforms works out in the long run, large numbers of candidates are likely to spend more time listening to voters than they have in the past.... And that's a good thing."

Obamas spending low-key Christmas Eve in Hawaii (AP)

HONOLULU ? President Barack Obama and his family are easing into vacation mode, spending a low-key Christmas Eve out of the spotlight.

The president spent his first morning in Hawaii at a multimillion-dollar vacation home his family rents in the Kailua Beach area, near Honolulu. He skipped his standard early morning gym workout, and headed to the golf course later Saturday.

First lady Michelle Obama, meanwhile, got into the Christmas spirit by helping track Santa for NORAD. The North American Aerospace Defense Command has been telling anxious children about Santa's whereabouts every year since 1955.

The White House said Mrs. Obama answered several calls from children around the country who wanted to know how close Santa was to their homes.

The Obamas were to spend Christmas Eve at home with a close circle of family and friends that typically joins the president for his annual Hawaiian vacation. They include Obama's sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who lives in the state with her family, and several friends the president has known since high school.

The president's annual December trip to the state where he was born and mostly raised almost didn't happen. He had planned to arrive in Hawaii on Dec. 17, but delayed his departure while Congress worked its way through a stalemate over extending payroll tax cuts.

A deal was finalized Friday morning. Hours later, the president boarded Air Force One for Hawaii to meet his wife and daughters, who traveled ahead of him.

Obama's first order of business when he arrived was taking his wife out to dinner. The couple joined a few friends at Morimoto restaurant, one of their favorite dining spots on the island of Oahu.

The president has no public events planned in Hawaii. A small group of advisers accompanied him to brief him on domestic and international developments.

The Obamas are expected to return to Washington shortly after New Year's Day.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: Research Reports on Rheumatoid Arthritis from University of Amsterdam Provide New Insights

A report, "Silencing the expression of Ras family GTPase homologues decreases inflammation and joint destruction in experimental arthritis," is newly published data in The American Journal of Pathology. According to the authors of recent research published in the The American Journal of Pathology, "Changes in the expression and activation status of Ras proteins are thought to contribute to the pathological phenotype of stromal fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) in rheumatoid arthritis, a prototypical immune-mediated inflammatory disease. Broad inhibition of Ras and related proteins has shown protective effects in animal models of arthritis, but each of the Ras family homologues (ie, H-, K-, and N-Ras) makes distinct contributions to cellular activation."

"We examined the expression of each Ras protein in synovial tissue and FLS obtained from patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other forms of inflammatory arthritis. Each Ras protein was expressed in synovial tissue and cultured FLS. Each homolog was also activated following FLS stimulation with tumor necrosis factor-a or interleukin (IL)-1?. Constitutively active mutants of each Ras protein enhanced IL-1?-induced FLS matrix metalloproteinase-3 production, while only active H-Ras enhanced IL-8 production. Gene silencing demonstrated that each Ras protein contributed to IL-1?-dependent IL-6 production, while H-Ras and N-Ras supported IL-1?-dependent matrix metalloproteinase-3 and IL-8 production, respectively. The overlap in contributions of Ras homologues to FLS activation suggests that broad targeting of Ras GTPases in vivo suppresses global inflammation and joint destruction in arthritis," wrote Launay D. de and colleagues, University of Amsterdam.

The researchers concluded: "Consistent with this, simultaneous silencing of H-Ras, K-Ras, and N-Ras expression significantly reduces inflammation and joint destruction in murine collagen-induced arthritis, while specific targeting of N-Ras alone is less effective in providing clinical benefits."

de and colleagues published their study in The American Journal of Pathology (Silencing the expression of Ras family GTPase homologues decreases inflammation and joint destruction in experimental arthritis. The American Journal of Pathology, 2010;177(6):3010-24).

Saudi firm buys farmland in Argentina to secure animal feed

By Adam Schreck, Associated Press

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates ? Saudi Arabia's largest dairy company said this week that it is buying Argentine farm operator Fondomonte for $83 million to secure access to a supply of animal feed.

By Alejandro Pagni, AFP/Getty Images

Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner speaks at her inauguration in Buenos Aires Dec. 10, 2011.

The acquisition will give Riyadh-based Almarai Co. control of roughly 30,000 acres of farmland in the South American nation just ahead of tough new limits likely to be imposed by Argentina's government on foreign ownership of productive land.

Almarai said the deal is in line with the desert kingdom's policy of "securing supplies and conserving local resources."

Despite its scorching desert climate, Saudi Arabia for decades produced millions of tons of homegrown wheat with the help of generous farm subsidies. It is now trying to wind down domestic production because of concern over dwindling water supplies.

Fondomonte operates three farms in Argentina dedicated to producing corn and soybeans, according to Almarai. The Argentine company's website says it also grows barley, rice and sorghum.

Almarai said it plans to use the crops to feed chickens and cattle.

"This is a relatively significant move, that they're actually acquiring a company," said Farouk Miah, an analyst at NCB Capital in Riyadh. "If anything, I think this is the beginning of a trend."

The Saudi purchase was announced as Argentina's Senate prepared to approve strict new limits on foreign land ownership, designed to protect the South American country's food resources.

The law, proposed by President Cristina Fernandez and already passed by the House, would limit individual foreign ownership of rural land to 2,500 acres per titleholder, and bar any more purchases by foreigners once 15% of Argentina's land is foreign owned.

No one knows just how much Argentine land is already in foreign hands. The law would create a nationwide land registry to establish who owns what. Fernandez has said the law would not take away land already owned by foreigners.

As their populations boom, oil-rich Gulf Arab nations have shown increased interest in buying farmland and other agricultural assets overseas to ensure reliable food supplies.

Emirati investors have bought farmland in Pakistan, while Saudi Arabia's Binladin Group has sought to develop rice fields in Indonesia. Qatar's sovereign wealth fund set up a company in 2008 known as Hassad Food specifically to target agricultural investments abroad.

Almarai is one of the Middle East's largest food companies. It traditionally focused on milk and other dairy products like yoghurt and cheese, but it has recently begun expanding into new product lines such as juices, baked goods and poultry products.

That expansion means "it's even more critical for them to have secure supplies coming in," Miah said.

Satyajit Das on What Went Wrong With Finance ? naked capitalism

?The didn?t know what they were doing? line is a con because it allows for good faith on the part of the actors. They were just ignorant, incompetent, or mistaken. What it covers over is the criminality of those involved. As I wrote here yesterday, during this time we had the biggest frauds in history going on. Cons on cons on cons. Yet in this case, although it had the same effect of separating the marks from their money, and indeed magnified that effect, it was just people in over their heads, not knowing what they were doing. This is my perennial criticism of Das. He was part of a criminal enterprise. Once you look at it from this perspective, what happened becomes easy to understand and predictable. More than this, it becomes apparent why, even after the meltdown showed how destructive they are, the industry continues to defend and sell these instruments. But instead we are invited to believe the story that an industry filled with the best and most brilliant mathematicians money could buy and yet somehow they all missed, and continue to miss, the fatal flaws in these products that even simple arithmetic would reveal. It has become a fixture of our age that lies, even obvious ones, repeated often enough will be treated more seriously than the truth. So it is that we can see the victims of great crimes in their tens of millions, but no criminals, so we are told, who committed them.

It's Not Me, It's You: Donald Trump Breaks Up With The GOP

In the wake of the embarrassing implosion of his planned GOP presidential debate in Des Moines?better known as Donald Trump's Very Classy GOP Presidential Primary Debate?Donald Trump has made good on his threat to abandon the Republican party. Trump has officially changed his voter registration in New York state from Republican to "unaffiliated." Which means Trump is that much closer to joining the "party" of Michael Bloomberg, Ross Perot, Kinky Friedman, and John Tyler, leaving open the hilarious, tantalizing possibility of him fake-running for president as an independent.

And according to Trump aide Michael Cohen, this is all the Republicans own damn fault: Trump was "disgusted with the way Republicans are handling" the payroll tax cut extension, saying the actions of Republicans were partly to blame for his party change. Previously, Trump used a similar excuse to get out of the debate in a, um, dignified manner: he claimed that Republicans (except for Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum) would only agree to participate if he promised not to run for president as an independent?it definitely wasn't because Trump conjured up an "unwanted circus-like atmosphere." Definitely not.

At least this gives Trump more time for his two passions: endlessly promoting his reality TV show, Celebrity Combover Apprentice, and golf. To that end, Trump?s company has signed a 20-year license deal to operate the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature course under construction at Ferry Point Park in the Bronx. Trump's organization, to their credit, did a good job credibly running the Central Park carousel. Of course, we can almost certainly guarantee Trump had nothing to do with that himself?who has time to run a company when they can be luxuriating amongst "yards and yards of gold silk?"

Seven states win federal education competition (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Seven states won a share of $200 million in federal "Race to the Top" money to improve K-12 education programs, the Education Department announced Thursday.

The winners are Arizona, $25.1 million; Colorado, $17.9 million; Illinois, $42.8 million; Kentucky, $17 million; Louisiana, $17.5 million; Pennsylvania, $41.3 million; and New Jersey, $37.9 million.

The Obama administration has awarded billions of dollars in such competitions to encourage changes in education that it favors. The seven states competing in this round were all runners-up last year, and the Education Department has said it wants to encourage them to finish and carry out many of the changes proposed in their earlier applications.

Competing states committed to make changes such as improving principal and teacher evaluation systems and turning around under-performing schools. They also were asked to show specifically how they would improve science, technology, engineering and math instruction.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said the money was driving dramatic improvements.

"We've had broken teacher-evaluation systems in many places, unfortunately for five, or six or seven decades," Duncan said. "You've seen more effort there and more movement in a short amount of time than in a long time prior to that, and many states are using Race to the Top resources to do that."

Two other states, South Carolina and California, were also eligible. South Carolina opted not to compete, while California submitted an incomplete application, the Education Department said.

Last week, nine states were announced as winners of a share of $500 million in grants under a similar competition focused on improving early learning programs.

Duncan also said federal officials are monitoring states to ensure that they follow through on their plans to improve schools with Race to the Top money. For example, he said he has warned Hawaii that it's in danger of losing funding.

"We're going to look for some pretty significant improvements early in the new year," Duncan said. "There's not a hard-and-fast date. If we see things turning around, that would be fantastic. If we don't see things turning around, then we've got some tough decisions to make."

Iran blocks UK website in new diplomatic spat (AP)

LONDON ? Iran has blocked access to a British government website aimed at Iranian audiences in a new act of aggression against the U.K., Britain's Foreign Secretary said Thursday.

William Hague claimed that the website ? the online presence of Britain's now shuttered embassy in Tehran ? had been deliberately targeted by the Iranian regime.

The decision to disrupt access to the site follows the violent storming of Britain's embassy by demonstrators last month, when a mob trashed rooms, damaged furniture, scrawled graffiti and tore up a portrait of Queen Victoria, as staff took shelter.

Hague pulled British diplomats out of Iran for their own safety and made the rare decision to expel all Iranian diplomats from U.K. soil.

The British website contained information for Iranian hoping to visit Britain and details on U.K. government policies. Those trying to access the pages are now directed to a list of Iranian government approved websites, including Iran's English-language Press TV.

"This action is counterproductive and ill-judged. It will confirm to the Iranian people that their government is determined to block their access to information, and to conceal from them the international community's legitimate concerns about Iran's policies and behavior. It will also make it harder for Iranian nationals to access information about visiting the U.K.," Hague said.

He said the action provided further proof of "the Iranian government's dire record on freedom of speech and human rights in general."

Earlier this month, a group of leading international broadcasters accused Iran of increasing its intimidation of foreign media and accelerating efforts to jam satellite broadcasts in Farsi from reaching Iranian audiences.

Following a meeting of senior media executives in London, Voice of America, the British Broadcasting Corporation, Germany's Deutsche Welle, France's AEF and Radio Netherlands Worldwide issued a joint statement calling for an end to attempts to block independent media.

ArtsBeat Blog: Large Hepworth Sculpture Stolen From Park in London

December 21, 2011, 12:30 pm By CAROL VOGEL

Thieves entered Dulwich Park in south London on Monday night and stole a large bronze sculpture by one of Britain?s much-loved artists. The sculpture, ?Two Forms (Divided Circle),?? by Barbara Hepworth, had been a familiar sight since it was installed in the park more than 40 years ago.

A spokesman for the neighborhood council said it was insured for nearly $800,000. According to The Associated Press, the incident happened within hours after Scotland Yard officially dedicated a unit to investigate the theft of steel cables and metal car parts, which have become an increasing target for thieves as the price of copper, lead and bronze continues to rise.

Hepworth died in 1975 in a fire at her studio in Cornwall. and art experts consider ?Two Forms (Divided Circle)?? among her most important late works. Standing more than 6 feet tall, it was the only major sculpture in the park and is one of only six casts. Local officials are offering a reward of about $1,600 for its recovery.

Scandal, financial mess dim Minn. GOP's '12 hopes (AP)

ST. PAUL, Minn. ? It wasn't so long ago that Minnesota seemed like an attractive target for an emboldened GOP trying to expand its list of presidential battlegrounds. But a financial tailspin at state party headquarters and allegations of infidelity involving one of the party's young stars have Republicans watching in horror as their brand is tarnished.

The worst-case scenario for Republicans: that donors will see the party as a bad investment, diverting resources that might have been spent making the Obama campaign defend once-friendly turf; and that grass-roots activists, turned off by scandal and dysfunction, will sit out the election cycle.

While a Republican presidential campaign "will invest in Minnesota if it thinks they can win it, they will also look at how well the party is doing its basic functions ? identifying Republicans, getting out the vote," Scott Cottington, a St. Paul-based political consultant who works on GOP campaigns around the country, said Tuesday. "They will make a decision based in part on the strength of the collective effort."

The potential problems reach far deeper than presidential politics. Newly won Republican majorities in the state House and Senate started to look wobbly last week when Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch abruptly resigned her leadership post and said she wouldn't seek re-election. A day later, several of her Republican colleagues said Koch quit only after they confronted her with rumors of her "inappropriate relationship" with a Senate employee.

But that was only the worst piece of news on a terrible day for Republicans. The same day Koch's colleagues went public with their claims, the front-runner to take control of the financially troubled state party dropped out of the race after revelations of an arrest for expired car registration and an earlier sexual harassment lawsuit. And a Republican candidate to challenge popular Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar next year admitted a 2005 arrest for carrying a loaded gun at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

By late afternoon Friday party operatives, activists and true believers were jamming Twitter with open consternation. "I need a drink," tweeted Mark Drake, a former state party spokesman.

It wasn't always this way. Despite Minnesota's longstanding liberal reputation, conservative Republicans made real gains in the state throughout the past decade. President George W. Bush made a serious ? though ultimately unsuccessful ? play in 2004 at breaking the Democratic lock on the state's electoral votes that dates to 1976. As recently as 2008, the party had national rising stars in the likes of Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Sen. Norm Coleman, and the Republican National Committee chose St. Paul as the site of its 2008 national convention.

Today Pawlenty is in private life after a failed run for president, and Coleman lost his 2008 election to Al Franken. Minnesota Republican Michele Bachmann remains in the presidential race, but has struggled in polls after a brief burst of success earlier this year.

Obama dispatched John McCain handily here, and the party no longer holds a single statewide elected office. So far, Republicans have failed to recruit any formidable opponent for Klobuchar. And few talk with confidence of Minnesota as a presidential pickup opportunity the way they do neighboring states like Iowa and Wisconsin.

"I anticipate Obama will carry the state," said Joe Repya, a conservative activist and former Army officer who ran unsuccessfully for Republican state chairman in 2007.

Repya is blunter than most of his fellow Republicans when it comes to the financial mess facing the state party, with debt estimated from $500,000 and $1.2 million. In recent weeks, the party's chairman, deputy chairman and executive director have all left their jobs. Departing chairman Tony Sutton pinned the debt on his decision to bankroll a recount of the 2010 governor's race, in which Democrat Mark Dayton ultimately emerged triumphant.

"I'm not sure most Republicans understand how deep the trouble we're in right now," Repya said. "Next year is going to be a tough year for the party. I really think so. I wish I could shed a glimmer of hope, but I'm a realist."

Bill Guidera, the party's finance chairman, said the next leader will have to make reassuring jittery Republican donors a top priority.

"Because of the financial situation, we need to convince our donors at all levels that we have a business plan to relieve the debt, and get us into positive growth," Guidera said.

Numerous Minnesota Republicans insist Election Day 2012 is far enough off for the party to right itself. Factors like the economy, Obama's poll numbers and the strength of the Republican presidential candidate will keep conservative donors motivated, they say.

"This isn't September of 2012," said Phil Krinkie, a former Republican state lawmaker and anti-tax activist. "There's plenty of times to put things back together again. Out of the muck and the mire comes the lotus blossom."

But money's not the only problem. The infidelity claims against the married Koch has Democrats crying hypocrisy, since she was part of a push to allow voters in 2012 to decide whether to ban same-sex marriage in the state Constitution.

Ken Martin, chairman of the state Democratic Party, said Democrats will make it a prominent issue as they try to undo last year's Republican takeover of the Legislature and help Obama defend the state. Martin questioned, though, if Democrats would even need to make much of an argument.

"There's an old adage in politics," Martin said. "When your opponent is committing political suicide, it's best to stand out of the way."

U.S. lifts sanctions on post-Gaddafi Libya (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The United States on Friday lifted most of the economic sanctions it had in place against Libya before the fall of former ruler Muammar Gaddafi.

"After careful consultation with the new Libyan government, the United States rolled back most U.S. sanctions on the government of Libya to keep our commitment to the Libyan people," the White House said in a statement.

Gaddafi's 42-year rule collapsed when his forces fled Tripoli in August and the last of the fighting in Libya ended in October when he was captured and killed by rebels.

The U.S. action followed by the lifting of sanctions by the U.N. Security Council on Libya's central banks and a subsidiary.

"Today's action unfreezes all government and central bank funds within U.S. jurisdiction, with limited exceptions," the White House said, adding that assets in the United States of Gaddafi family and his former aides remain frozen.
