(AP) ? A gunman killed five people in Seattle on Wednesday ? four at a cafe and another in a carjacking ? before he apparently shot himself as officers closed in following a citywide manhunt, authorities said.

The suspect died later Wednesday at Harborview Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg said.

Police who began scouring the area for the person who opened fire at the cafe near the University of Washington responded a short time later to another fatal shooting near the city's downtown. They say a man killed a woman in an apparent carjacking and fled in a black SUV.

Police said late Wednesday they believe one man was responsible for both attacks.

"At this time, we feel pretty confident that we have the suspect," said Assistant Seattle Police Chief Nick Metz.

The Seattle Times identified the suspect as Ian Lee Stawicki, 40, of Seattle, citing unidentified law enforcement sources. Seattle police Sgt. Sean Whitcomb said he couldn't confirm the name and said police would not publicly identify the suspect Wednesday night.

Andrew Stawicki, 29, of Ellensburg, told the Times he recognized a photo shown on TV newscasts of the alleged gunman as his brother Ian. Andrew Stawicki said Ian Stawicki was mentally ill.

"It's no surprise to me this happened," he told the newspaper. "We could see this coming. Nothing good is going to come with that much anger inside of you."

A phone number for Andrew Stawicki rang busy when The Associated Press tried to reach him for comment.

The latest spasm of deadly gun violence to hit the city worried Seattle's leaders and prompted police to consider increasing patrols in high-crime areas. The five victims' deaths bring the number of homicides so far this year to 21, matching the total for all of last year.

Police said residents could expect a heightened police presence in the city for the time being.

Gunfire erupted late Wednesday morning at Cafe Racer, a restaurant and music venue north of the University of Washington. The gunman was described as a man, possibly in his 30s, wearing dark clothes.

Police released two photos from inside the cafe, apparently taken from a security camera. One shows a man walking into the establishment, with a woman nearby reading a book. Another photo shows stools overturned, and the man standing and holding what appears to be a handgun.

Two men died at the scene, and a third man and a woman from the cafe died at a hospital.

One man wounded in cafe shooting remained at Harborview in critical but stable condition following surgery earlier in the day. Gregg confirmed his name as Leonard Meuse. Meuse's father, Raymond Meuse, told the Times his son was shot in the jaw and armpit but was expected to survive.

A King County medical examiner's spokeswoman said her office might be able to release the dead victims' identifications Thursday.

Evan Hill, who lives above the building where the shooting happened, said the cafe was an artists' collective and performance space.

"It's the strangest place to think of a shooting," said Hill, who heard four to five shots. He said he ran to his balcony and called 911, but didn't see a suspect.

On a street corner across from the cafe, friends of the victims gathered by the ivy-covered wall of an apartment building. Some collapsed in grief. The cafe's owner hugged them and commiserated.

Units of police officers marched by with rifles and shotguns, knocking on doors and checking driveways and yards in the neighborhood of single-family, bungalow-style homes, restaurants and businesses.

In a narrative of the day's violence released Wednesday night, police said it appears the gunman fled to the First Hill neighborhood near downtown, where he fatally shot a woman in a parking lot and stole her SUV.

Police believe the gunman drove the SUV to West Seattle and ditched it, leaving a gun in the car. After officers found the vehicle, they flooded that area with uniformed and plainclothes officers.

Late Wednesday afternoon, a plainclothes detective spotted the cafe suspect and called for uniformed officers and a SWAT team, Assistant Police Chief Jim Pugel said.

As those officers arrived, the man put a gun to his head and pulled the trigger, Pugel said.

During the manhunt, Roosevelt High School, Eckstein Middle School and Greenlake Elementary were locked down, according to the school district.

In the last month, there have been two random killings in the city.

Last week, a man died when a stray bullet struck him as he and his family drove down a Seattle street. In late April, a woman died of injuries suffered in an apparently random drive-by shooting near downtown.

No arrests have been made in either of those fatalities.

On Saturday, a bystander was wounded near the Space Needle when he was struck by a bullet allegedly fired by a gang member involved in a dispute with another man, authorities said.

Later that night, about 60 shots were fired in drive-by shootings at four houses. No one was hit.

Besides the plan to increase the number of officers on patrol in high-crime areas, police are urging people with information about shootings to come forward.

At a news conference, Mayor Mike McGinn said the spate of violence had "shaken" the city.

"It's going to take our political leaders, coming together, to give our police officers the support and tools they need to do their jobs," McGinn said.

City Councilman Bruce Harrell said leaders needed to consider everything - from changing laws to addressing the culture of violence.

"If we are to be honest, there's no easy fix," he said.

Local filmmakers stirring up 'Dust' - KansasCity.com

The Kansas City Star

The Kansas City Star

When Kansas City artists Cody Critcheloe, Jaimie Warren and Peggy Noland got a $4,000 Rocket Grant for an art project, they immediately decided it would go into the making of a music video.

That wouldn?t be too hard for the trio, who were in the habit of defying the rules of art and fashion. Critcheloe has made videos for his punk rock band Ssion. Noland designs wild costumes for videos and performance art pieces. Warren dresses up as a popcorn and hosts ?Whoop Dee Doo,? a local live show that involves lots of improvisation and fun for kids. Shooting a music video would be too easy and normal, they thought, so they decided a 20-minute film would be better. ?We thought it might just look like one of the projects we usually do, so we decided to step out from what we usually do and work with someone new,? said Warren. The new people were Casey Spooner and Adam Dugas, both from New York and with a wealth of experience making movies. Spooner works on solo projects and also has a band, which has toured with Critcheloe and Ssion. Noland has designed clothes for both. In the process the 20-minute project evolved to 70, and on Thursday the movie will make its local debut at the Tivoli Cinemas in Westport. ?We spent a month developing the movie and then shot it in three days. It was crazy,? said Dugas, who directed the film with Spooner.?Dust? is about a family facing a sort of crisis. Three siblings, Lynn (Warren), Baker (Critcheloe) and Margaret Marie (Noland) are confronted with the reality of an elder brother, Coke (Dugas), who is planning to move back into the family house with his new wife. That is troubling enough for the three siblings and their myopic outlook on life. It doesn?t help that they can?t stand Patty (Katie Rayle of Los Angeles), their sister-in-law. Discerning viewers might recognize an echo of Anton Chekhov?s famous play ?Three Sisters.? However, the producers say ?the style is informed by independent cinema, particularly the Warhol/Morrissey films, early John Waters, Lars von Trier, Pedro Almodovar and Rainer Werner Fassbinder.?The filmmakers just finished editing this month and have no firm plans to test the festival circuit, but they hope to have a DVD in distribution in the fall.Warren said she has opted not to watch the film before the public screening. She wants to feel that rush of excitement with the rest of the cast and crew. The film was mostly shot at the large Northeast area house she shares with four other artists. The crew converted every room into a set. More than 30 area artists worked on the project, including lighting, costume and set designers and videographers. Warren discovered that acting for film wasn?t too far removed from the improvisational style of ?Whoop Dee Doo,? but she?s not sure if the effect is the same. ?To me the experience was very surreal, because we didn?t know what we were getting into,? Warren said. ?It was hard for me. I had never acted before and I don?t even know whether I did a good job.? Locals can see and judge for themselves.

All of those things taken together give PureVPN a leadership status in this marketplace by providing services, series of services that are, as I said it before critical for individuals and businesses that want to connect without limitation no matter where they are and enjoy the benefit the advantage that really come having multiple server locations throughout the world in different countries and PureVPN does just that.

Importance of Virtual Private Network

Eric: Why are Virtual Private Networks are so important?

Levis: They are important for numbers of reasons. Let?s talk with one of the point I raised in the beginning of the conversation. If you are an individual or a business operating out of a country where there may be off and on restriction on access to the internet either you can get online or to extent you can get online too much of your activity is policed or you prevented from doing much of anything even though everything you plan on doing is legal and honorable and a continuation of your business or your day to day activity as an individual online. So having that Virtual Private Network along with these multiple server locations in different countries throughout the world gives you the opportunity to have that freedom of access, your choice of connectivity and the high quality service associated with going online. That?s why Virtual Private Networks as a rule are important. But not of Virtual Private Networks are the same. PureVPN for example as I explained in the beginning has an established track record that goes back nearly six years beginning in November 2006 as an experimental of service in which they are providing online security against data sniffers. So this is part of two things really when you looking it from the biggest picture possible. You are giving people the online security in certain locations where there are data sniffers that would otherwise restrict your access to do business or go online. And secondly you are getting a company that has an established track record of success in comparison to some of these other VPN- Virtual Private Networks. They don?t have the long journey, they don?t have the acceptance in the market place and don?t have the testimonials from users both individuals and businesses that confirm indeed that this is a service that you rely for secure and convenient, backed by 24*7 tech support. All of those features taken together distinguish the PureVPN from the competition.

PureVPN?s Distinguishing Factors

Eric: And speaking of competition, what does distinguish PureVPN from the competition?

Levis: Well some of those features I mentioned previously but the others include as I said having its global reach. When you have server location across the globe in places like the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands I am just going through some of them I mean there are many more Luxembourg, Sweden, Romania and Singapore and Switzerland out of its name other Russian and Malaysia and Ireland and Panama. If you looked at all of those different countries and the server locations that we have in each of them it means that and I come back to this you are going to get efficient friendly support 24 hours a day 7 days a week, you are going to get integrated chat, you are also going to get bypass restrictions, you will be able to access sites like Hulu, Netflix, BBC etc.. The competition doesn?t have that kind of global reach. The competition doesn?t have at many multiple server locations in so many different countries. So if you are working with an individual or a business and PureVPN works with many throughout the world we in comparison to the competition have that reach and we have those global partners all of which you can see on the website at PureVPN.com which again distinguishes PureVPN from the competition often the competition does not have the depth and the resources and the support to handle this sort of business for both individual and companies worldwide. It doesn?t have comparable pricing plan and you get something as low as $6.25 with three days money back guarantee. So all of things as I said before or as said are the strengths that distinguish PureVPN from the competition. When you are looking at providers of Virtual Private Network the first and most important thing that you have to work out is the depth. Do they have global depth to handle that business and also give you the server location? Do they have track back in the market place? Do they have testimonials and is the pricing competitive? PureVPN has all of these things which again speak to the company success both again today and for the long term.?

PureVPN for Individuals and Businesses

Eric: Today we are joined by Levis Fein, Marketing Consultant and media representative for PureVPN here on Enterprise Radio a part of the epodcast network. Levis what are some key groups that use PureVPN services?

Levis: oh as I said they are number of them. First, individuals, you as an individual may be in a country as a traveler or doing some extended businesses that represented your company for which you work and you want to get online. And you want to get online to do perfectly legal thing. You want to get online may be to access use some content some of the site as I mentioned before Hulu, Netflix, BBC etc and there may be restriction. To bypass those restrictions to secure your identity and at the same time to enjoy convenient reliable online access PureVPN is going to give that to you. If your business operating in a country or you have a satellite offices doing business in a country whether they may be data sniffers or furious restriction against getting online which is a mean of control by government, PureVPN gives you the liberty to access that site or those site the free looking internet, which means you can also unblock Facebook, Twitter, Social Media these are things that people and companies use in extension of business and day to day activity and they want to get online. But there are also gamers and gamers benefits from this global reach and multiple servers location in which they are going to be in facing fellow players around the world and the best part about this off course whether you are individual or a gamer or a business you get that live tech support 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Look it from the perspective of an individual simply wants to get online with the security of Virtual Private Network and business wants to do the same or gamers. So all going to benefits from the services that PureVPN provide but at the same time there are three core constituencies for which PureVPN exist and as I said throughout this conversation as it proved it reputation for providing reliable efficient service for each of this respected groups.

Eric: How do you envision PureVPN expanding or evolving?

Levis: Oh suddenly I can see that this brand would become even more international in terms of recognition and reach it?s already a global company yet as I described earlier and that based on the number of factors both on the number of clients the types the clients their locations as well as the server locations throughout the world. So as the brand further evolves the name recognition in turn will rise and that means in an otherwise crowded or competitive market place among companies that seek to provide Virtual Private Network and again as I said during this conversation not all of those companies are the same. PureVPN will continue to stand out and will become go to standard for individuals, businesses and gamers that want the freedom and connectivity and the security that associated with a Virtual Private Network. So we would become and we are in some market already the standard by which you judge everything else so the brand and the service becomes inter, changeable just as Coca-Cola or soda, or soft drink are inter changeable the same will be applicable with PureVPN and a Virtual Private Network service.

Response from Customers about PureVPN?s Different Platforms

Eric: And finally what?s the response been like among the users to the benefits available from PureVPN ?

Levis: The response has been incredibly positive and if you go to the website PureVPN.com. We have it right on our website for people to view satisfied customer in over 105 countries offering testimonials about the services we provide, the efficient friendly support that is available for customers and of course the depth both globally and in terms of specific product and services. We have platforms for Windows, Macintosh, Linux. Those are key because sometime I want close with this other Virtual Private Network have a platform for only one of those thing. May be just something for Windows and definitely for Windows very unlikely will have it for Macintosh but they have it for Linux and they may not have for Windows and vice versa. We understand that individuals and businesses use different platforms and as a result we have catered to and we continue to build upon those different platforms recognizing that people are going to have many different devices , different mobile devices, different desktop and we have to cater their needs and their expectation and we have done that. So I think in many respects that I know that kind of service and that kind of expertise backed by customers and they have said look this is something I enjoy, this is something I recommend and they have said that unanimously across over 100 countries, that more than anything else is the best indication that potential customers can enjoy by going to the site PureVPN.com and getting immediately the peace of mind that they may be looking for from these independent testimonials that certify indeed PureVPN is the standard by which all Virtual Private Network should be judged.

Eric: He is Levis Fein, marketing consultant and media representative for PureVPN. As a business writer and advisor, Levis has extensive experience working with technology companies, software developers and telecom brands. And the website once again is PureVPN.com. Levis thanks so much for joining us today on Enterprise Radio.

Levis: My Pleasure.

Yale School of Medicine researchers have found that intensively controlling glucose (glycemic) levels in type-2 diabetes patients may not reduce the risk of kidney failure. The study, which is a review of data from seven clinical trials, is published in the May 28 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.

To test the hypothesis that aggressive glycemic control can prevent renal disease in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, first author Steven G. Coca of Yale and colleagues searched available medical literature and evaluated seven randomized trials involving 28,065 adult patients who were monitored for two to 15 years.

The team found that compared with those who had usual treatment, intensively controlling glucose with higher doses of medication did not definitively reduce the risk of impaired kidney function, the need for dialysis, or death from kidney disease.

Coca said many researchers have presumed that such intensive treatment would benefit patients by protecting the kidneys, but these results question whether patients truly are better off with this approach.

"After pooling the results from the follow-up data in the seven studies examined, our analysis shows that intensive glycemic control may improve some things about the kidney that we measure, but did not affect patients' outcomes," said Coca, assistant professor in the section of nephrology in the Department of Internal Medicine at Yale.

Tax could cost UBS up to 10 pct of Europe assetseShareholder ...

ZURICH (Reuters) - UBS AG (VTX:UBSN.VX - News) could see up to 10 percent of its European assets of 300 billion Swiss francs ($312.52 billion) moved out due to pressure to clamp down on untaxed accounts, the head of the wealth management business was quoted as saying on Saturday.

"We have been losing assets in Europe for many quarters, around 10 billion francs to date," Juerg Zeltner told the Finanz und Wirtschaft newspaper in an interview.

"And we expect further asset outflows going forward, in the region of 12 to 30 billion francs. That's a bitter pill to swallow. We are able offset this erosion thanks to strong growth in new markets."

Zeltner said UBS had assets under management of over 300 billion francs in Europe, over 170 billion francs in Asia, around 110 billion francs in emerging markets and 130 billion in Switzerland.

"Banks that are focused largely on the European cross-border business are having a much tougher time," he said.

After mounting criticism of its tradition of strict bank secrecy, Switzerland has agreed to do more to help foreign governments hunt tax evaders and has signed deals with Germany, Britain and Austria to levy punitive taxes on undeclared assets held in its banks and a withholding tax on future client income.

Zeltner said he did not expect a mass exodus of clients once the deals come into force, in theory in 2013, although the German deal still faces some opposition from the Social Democrats.

"The lion's share of the German money leaving the bank will go to the tax authorities. There is no evidence of clients taking their money out of the country as they did in the U.S. case," he said.

UBS paid a big fine and handed over details of more than 4,000 clients to U.S. authorities in 2009 to settle allegations it helped wealthy Americans dodge taxes.

"I see no indication that assets are being moved to Singapore or Hong Kong," Zeltner added.

UBS posted strong money flows into its flagship private bank in the first quarter, underscoring its appeal as a safe haven for the savings of the world's wealthy.

Switzerland's biggest bank, scaling back its risky investment bank which suffered huge losses in the credit crunch to focus on private banking, said the unit won a net 6.7 billion francs in fresh assets and hiked margins.

UBS is also trying to recover from a rogue trading scandal involving London-based Kweku Adoboli, accused of unauthorized deals that cost the bank $2.3 billion.

This is the largest donation in the University?s history and the largest gift ever in support of any business school. In recognition of the Booth family?s extraordinary generosity, the Board of Trustees has voted unanimously to name the school the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

I don?t have any comment on this at this time other than Ted Snyder would be wise to take action on the issues in this blog post about business school rankings in determining how to use these funds and needs a multi-million dollar communication plan for the world?s experienced recruiting community so that this brand does not cause alumni great harm.

SpaceX capsule docks at International Space Station

About 250 miles above northwest Australia, a cargo-carrying space capsule linked up with the International Space Station, marking the first time a privately built and operated vehicle has ever docked at the orbiting outpost.

Astronauts on the space station plan to enter the capsule Saturday and take delivery of half a ton of food, water and clothing brought by the upstart space company that developed the spacecraft, Space Exploration Technologies Corp., better known as SpaceX.

The mission is considered the first test of NASA's plan to outsource space missions to privately funded companies now that the U.S. fleet of space shuttles has been retired. SpaceX aims to prove to NASA that its Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule are ready to take on the task of hauling cargo ? and eventually astronauts ? for the space agency.

"Today marks another critical step in the future of American spaceflight," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in a statement. "Now that a U.S. company has proven its ability to resupply the space station, it opens a new frontier for commercial opportunities in space ? and new job creation opportunities right here in the U.S."

The docking at 9:02 a.m. PDT on Friday was a milestone for SpaceX and may also mark a seismic shift for U.S. spaceflight, which for more than half a century has been the province of governments and large, entrenched aerospace firms.

On its own, SpaceX built its Dragon capsule and the Falcon 9 rocket that lifted it into orbit. By contrast, the overall design of NASA's previous space-going vehicles and their missions were tightly controlled by the government and contracted to aerospace giants.

At SpaceX's headquarters in Hawthorne, company engineers have overseen the entire mission, which began Tuesday when the Falcon 9 lifted off in the predawn hours from Cape Canaveral, Fla. They monitor incoming data for anomalies, and if there are any, they can order the launch to be scrubbed or address the mission issues.

In a post-docking webcast on NASA TV, Space Station Program Manager Mike Suffredini commented on the change underway in aerospace.

"A contractor relatively independent of NASA designed on its own a spacecraft, completely built and tested and flew this spacecraft in a manner that has been remarkable," he said.

Shortly after docking, a smiling Elon Musk, SpaceX's 40-year-old billionaire founder and chief executive, appeared at the briefing from the company's sprawling rocket-making facility in Hawthorne.

"This is the culmination of an incredible amount of work," he said, surrounded by a throng of cheering SpaceX workers. "There's so much that could've went wrong and it went right."

The last hours of the Dragon's journey to the space station weren't flawless. A problem with the spacecraft's onboard sensors pushed back the capture to about two hours later than planned.

After SpaceX engineers solved the issue, the Dragon floated in for docking. It was first grappled by the space station's 58-foot robotic arm at 6:56 a.m., controlled by astronaut Don Pettit, who had practiced the task dozens of times in simulation.

"Looks like we've got us a dragon by the tail," Pettit said on radio to NASA's Mission Control in Houston.

At that moment, engineers watching at SpaceX's control center in Hawthorne and at NASA's center in Houston began applauding, with rounds of high-fives and handshakes.

"You've made a lot of folks happy down here over in Hawthorne and right here in Houston," NASA's Mission Control radioed back to Pettit. "Great job, guys."

Later, the Dragon was drawn in closer, inch by inch, for docking. NASA officials said the crew plans to begin unloading the half-ton of food, water and clothes aboard the Dragon at 4:40 a.m. Saturday.

Until now, sending a spacecraft to the space station was a feat reserved for the world's wealthiest and most technologically advanced governments: the United States, Russia, Japan and the European Union.

NASA wants to turn the job of carrying cargo and crews over to private industry. Meanwhile, the agency will focus on deep-space missions to land astronauts on asteroids and Mars.

SpaceX, with about 1,800 employees, has gotten nearly $400 million in seed money from NASA and has a $1.6-billion contract to haul cargo in 12 flights to the space station for the space agency. If NASA deems the current test mission successful, SpaceX will begin fulfilling the contract later this year.

SpaceX is not alone in the so-called private space race. Orbital Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., is nipping at the company's heels, with a test flight of its commercial rocket set for later this year. Orbital also has a $1.9-billion cargo-hauling contract with NASA.

Critics, including some former astronauts, have voiced concerns about NASA's move toward private space missions. They have said private space companies are risky ventures with unproven technology.

But currently , the U.S. government has no way to space other than doling out $63 million for a seat on a Russian Soyuz rocket.

"It's essential we maintain such competition and fully support this burgeoning and capable industry to get U.S. astronauts back on American launch vehicles as soon as possible," John P. Holdren, assistant to President Obama on science and technology, said in a statement.

SpaceX has been planning the current mission for more than 17 months. The company initially hoped to visit the space station with the Dragon last year but faced repeated delays.

The Dragon is currently slated to stay at the space station until Thursday. Once released from the space station, the craft should make its way back to Earth and deploy parachutes to slow its descent after entering the atmosphere.

Exotic Animal Classifieds Open New Pet Opportunities | Love My ...

Exotic animal classifieds are advertisements in the print media or online websites. They serve people who wish to buy or sell animals that are not indigenous to a particular part of the world. The word, ?classified? relates to the practice of grouping cheap advertisements that appear in large numbers in print newspapers under headings such as ?Cars for Sale? or ?Situations Vacant?. This helps browsers to quickly find what they are looking for. Some websites have followed this practice now that the print media is on the decline

Many people are opposed to this trade on the grounds that it decimates populations of wild animals in certain parts of the world. Unscrupulous poachers will catch small gorillas and sell them without thought for what is happening to a natural environment or for suffering and death imposed on animals in transit.

Opposed to this scenario is the view that species can be saved from extinction when they are exported to zoos in other countries and used in breeding programs. Many breeds of dogs and cats, for example, are exotic but that does not seem to bother the anti-exotics lobby.

In fact the trade has been going on for centuries. English pheasants were left behind after the Roman conquerors abandoned the island and Fries land cattle from the Netherlands supply milk more economically than most indigenous breeds around the world. Such facts must temper some of the objections from opponents of the trade.

It may be that new trends in pet owning are emerging. The numbers of people living in cities expands exponentially and the costs of keeping traditional pets expands accordingly. Whereas a dog needs to run through spaces in order to live there are small creatures that do not require so much space or food. Small creatures such as pygmy pigs and sugar gliders are becoming fashionable.

Sugar gliders hail from the forests of Australasia. They are social animals which can survive well in a small space, bond well with owners and enjoy flitting from one side of a room to another. Importantly, they have character. Such animals that are very acceptable pets can be found in exotic animal classifieds.

Exclusive: China leadership rules Bo case isolated, limits purge: sources

BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese President Hu Jintao has demanded senior Communist Party officials stifle tensions over the ousting of ambitious politician Bo Xilai and show unity as they prepare for a change of leadership, sources briefed on recent meetings said.

Hu urged the party to close ranks at a meeting of about 200 officials early this month at a Beijing hotel, declaring the downfall of Bo - China's biggest political scandal in two decades - to be an "isolated case", the three sources said.

The sources' comments represent the first confirmation of speculation that Hu recently intervened to prevent a wider rift in the party and to resist pressure from some elements for a wider purge of the populist Bo's policies and supporters.

Bo, former party chief of Chongqing city, was suspended from the party's top ranks in April after his wife became a suspect in the murder of British businessman Neil Heywood. Before the scandal broke, Bo had been seen as a candidate to join China's new top leadership team to be unveiled this year.

"It's been settled that this will be dealt with as a criminal case, not a political case," said one of the sources, a retired official. "The central leadership wants to focus on ensuring a stable environment for the 18th Party Congress, so the guiding policy is to end all the rumors and contention."

The party congress, scheduled to be held late this year, will appoint a new generation of leaders. Hu and Premier Wen Jiabao will then step down from their government posts at the National People's Congress in early 2013, when Vice President Xi Jinping is likely to succeed Hu as president.

The sources, all with ties to senior party officials, spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid possible recriminations for speaking about internal party discussions.

Two of them said Hu had convened this month's meeting at the Jingxi Hotel, the party's heavily guarded conference hotel in western Beijing where leaders often hold secretive conclaves.

The meeting was part of a series of steps taken to shore up unity and advance preparations for the 18th Party Congress. Those steps included retired leaders, especially former president Jiang Zemin, giving their backing to Hu's position.

"Jiang said that if you have solid evidence that Gu Kailai committed murder and that Bo Xilai also committed major errors, then deal with it as an isolated criminal incident," said the retired official, paraphrasing a summary of Jiang's comments.

"There's already been too much instability. The overriding goal now must be a successful 18th Party Congress," the former official said, paraphrasing Jiang, 85, who a decade after he retired still exercises some influence over major decisions. One of the sources said Jiang was not at the Jingxi meeting and it was unclear where he made the remarks or how he conveyed them.

Hu's expected successor, Xi, also has stayed closely in line with the leadership's position on Bo, said the retired official.

IDEOLOGICAL RIFTS, RUMOURS

Describing Bo's downfall as a serious but isolated case of wrongdoing, Hu urged officials at the meeting to end ideological rifts and rumors ignited by the scandal, the sources added.

The domestic security chief, Zhou Yongkang, has faced accusations that he sought to protect Bo, but his career appears to have survived the controversy, despite rumors that Zhou could be sidelined.

"Zhou has been encouraged by the party leadership to make regular appearances and show he's trusted," said the retired official. He noted that Zhou and President Hu made a high-profile joint appearance before police on May 18.

Premier Wen had suggested he favored a wider reckoning in March when, a day before Bo was sacked as Chongqing party chief, the premier linked Bo's failings to the discredited radicalism of the Cultural Revolution.

But at the recent party meetings, Wen's comments were chided by some other officials, two of the sources said.

However, China's leaders could find enforcing demands for conformity from the public harder than from within the party.

Bo nurtured an ardent following among leftists who embraced what they viewed as his model of egalitarian growth, and they have continued to defend him as the victim of a plot. He had used Chongqing, a province-level municipality in southwest China, as a showcase for left-leaning populist policies.

Liberal reformers, however, want the government to look beyond Heywood's death and examine complaints about Bo's leadership, including accusations that his populist crackdown on organized crime in Chongqing involved abuses such as torture.

He was brought down after a furor erupted when his police chief, Wang Lijun, fled to a U.S. consulate for more than 24 hours in February and told American diplomats that he believed Bo's wife, Gu Kailai, was implicated in Heywood's death in November, according to later descriptions of Wang's allegations.

"The leadership won't turn this into a line struggle," independent politics researcher Chen Ziming said, using the party's jargon for an ideological purge.

Beijing-based Chen, who has sources close to the party, said there appeared to have been heated internal debate over how to handle the Bo case before deciding to contain it.

"The drama is focused on the three actors, and that's already complicated enough," Chen said, referring to Bo, his wife Gu, and the ex-police chief Wang.

"If there are more actors brought into the drama, then it will become just too complicated and troublesome."

Bo, 62, and Gu, 52, have disappeared from public view and have had no chance to respond publicly to the allegations.

OUT OF SIGHT

The make-up of the next central leadership elite will be settled over coming months through an opaque process of inspections, jockeying and balancing rival camps in the party.

In recent weeks, the party has launched informal ballots and inspections to size up potential candidates for promotion into the Central Committee, which has about 200 full members, and the Politburo, a more powerful body with about two dozen members, the three sources said.

The Politburo Standing Committee, the core decision-making body, is chosen from the Politburo. The standing committee currently has nine members.

"Now they're going from province to province to examine officials and settle on possible candidates for the next leadership," said Chen, the researcher.

In China's top-down politics, final decisions rest with a handful of leaders, but the results of these assessments can sway deliberations, he said.

The informal polls would serve as a basis for discussions when the leaders head to summer villas in coastal Beidaihe in July or August, when the new succession lineup would be firmed up, said one of the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.
