Godsey wins Alabama Open golf tournament

Published: Monday, July 30, 2012 at 3:30 a.m.
Last Modified: Monday, July 30, 2012 at 12:28 a.m.

TUSCALOOSA | After storming to a 10-stroke lead after two rounds in the Open Division of the Alabama Open Conner Godsey was the talk of the clubhouse at Ol? Colony Golf Complex.

?I don?t know what course he?s playing to shoot a 67,? one competitor said after his first of two consecutive 67s to open the tournament.

?He didn?t miss a single shot,? said another golfer.

In Sunday?s Senior Division, Rea Schuessler stole the show by coming back from a two-stroke deficit with three straight birdies in the final four holes to win by two over the leader coming into the final round, Ricky Smallridge.

Smallridge opened the way for Schuessler after missing a two-foot birdie putt on No. 10, then making bogey on the next three holes.

Schuessler knew time was running out if he was going to make the move to win.

?You feel anxious all day,? Schuessler said. ?But, on the last few holes, sure, you get nervous and start to tell yourself to stay calm.?

Schuessler was strong in the pressure, saving one of his best shots of the round for the toughest par-3 on the course, No. 17.

?I was fortunate to hit it to about five feet (from the hole) on 17,? Schuessler said. ?That gave me a two-shot cushion going into 18, which was nice because anything can happen on 18.?

Schuessler also knew his opponent could strike at any time.

?Ricky?s got a great resume. I knew he wasn?t going anywhere,? he said.

Smallridge had pressure of his own, trying to hold the lead while witnessing Schuessler?s late-round heroics.

?I knew I had to try and match him,? Smallridge said. ?I had birdie putts, but they were outside of what you?d consider legitimate makeable putts. I wanted to get under par so he had to shoot a 69 or 68, but I didn?t get under par and he shot a 68 anyway. He earned it, deserved it, took it, whatever adjective you want to use.?

Godsey won the Open Division despite slipping from his first and second round score of 67 to a final round of 73.

?I put some good rolls on putts, they just didn?t go in,? Godsey said. I didn?t hit many bad shots, I just didn?t hit many close shots.?

After playing the front nine at 5-under the first two rounds Godsey played the same nine holes at 2-over Sunday, making for the only nine-hole stretch in which he failed to make a birdie.

Godsey now has his second win of the summer, taking the TP Country Club Men?s Invitational in Cullman in early June.

Godsey looks forward to carrying the momentum from his strong summer into his first season as a golfer for Montevallo, after completing two seasons for Wallace State Community College.

?I like to think about the positives,? Godsey said while taking a quick glance at his new trophy.

Beijing floods unleash online criticism of government (+video)

The heaviest rain in six decades left at least 37 people dead and raised criticism online about Beijing's infrastructure.

By Christina Larson,?Correspondent / July 23, 2012

A car damaged by floods is seen after heavy rainfalls hit Zhou Kou Dian Village, Fangshan district, near Beijing July 22. The Chinese capital's heaviest rainstorm in six decades killed at least 37 people, flooded streets, and stranded 80,000 people at the main airport, state media, and the government said on Sunday.

By Sunday, Pan Anjun, deputy chief of the Beijing flood control headquarters, had tallied the damage. The Chinese newswire Xinhua reported that at least 37 people had died in storm-related damage or events, including 25 who drowned, 6 who were trapped in collapsing buildings, 5 who were electrocuted by fallen power lines, and 1 who was struck by lightning.

Some 500 flights into or out of Beijing Capital Airport were canceled. Reportedly 736 homes were flooded, and 66,000 residents in the hardest-hit areas had been temporarily located, many from the suburban district of Fangshan. At least 31 roads or bridges had collapsed.

All told, Mr. Pan estimated 2 million people were affected. And many of those have taken to online forums to express anger over what they see as ongoing lack of concern for proper construction amid Beijing's pell-mell growth ? as well as for people's needs amid the storm.

On Weibo, China?s Twitter-like social media site, some residents suggested that China?s Meteorological Bureau should have alerted Beijingers to potential dangers through text messages sent via China?s giant state-run telecoms, China Mobile and China Unicom. Of greater Beijing?s roughly 20 million people, roughly 95 percent have cellphones.

The impact of the unusual storm was exacerbated by problems in the municipal drainage system. Beijing?s total urban area has doubled in a decade, from about 700 square kilometers (270 sq. mi.) in 2000 to almost 1,400 square kilometers (500 sq. mi.) in 2010. Many of the city?s newer drains are built to absorb up to 45 millimeters (1.7 inches) of rain per hour, but at several points the volume of Saturday?s storm was much greater.

?When the city hosts big conferences, there are guards at every bridge. But when the big rain comes, there are none,? wrote Dong Lu, the popular sports anchor and commentator.

?We hosted the Asian Games and Olympic Games,? wrote someone on Weibo going by the name Wen. ?We spent billions of yuan to do monumental things. But now after after the heavy rains, we discover that we don't know how to build sewers.?

And as another concluded: ?The secret of Qingdao, a [coastal] city that not afraid of floods? Its drains were built by Germany.?

Pan, the flood control official, estimated the total cost of damages to be about 10 billion renminbi, or $1.6 billion. More than 13,000 vehicle insurance claims have already poured into the China Insurance Regulatory Commission?s Beijing branch.

Kevin Chou contributed to this report.

Save women, children first? Not likely

Despite the widespread notion that women and children have a better chance at surviving a shipwreck because they will be saved first, a new study finds that that's just wishful thinking.

The captain, crew and male passengers are more likely to survive maritime disasters than women and children, finds a new study by economists at Uppsala University in Sweden.

When it comes to abandoning ship, "it appears as if it's every man for himself," said lead researcher Mikael Elinder in a statement.

Elinder and his colleague studied 18 shipwrecks, including the Titanic and Lusitania, from 1852 to 2011 that involved more than 15,000 passengers and more than 30 nationalities. They limited their study to disasters that included information on the sex of survivors, that involved at least 100 people, and where at least 5 percent survived and 5 percent died.

Their findings run counter to the notion that women and children get priority when escaping a shipwreck. The sinking of the Titanic 100 years ago, where three times more women survived than men, popularized this "unwritten law of the sea," because the captain ordered that women and children went into the lifeboats first.

But it turns out that this is the exception rather than the rule. Study co-author Oscar Erixson grew up on stories of chivalrous men on the Titanic who gave their lives for the women and children. "(So) the survival patterns we found (in this study) came as surprise to me," the economist wrote in an email to LiveScience. [ Gallery: Stunning Shots of the Titanic Shipwreck ]

In results published online Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Erixson and Elinder found that overall, women were about half as likely to survive as men. And they found that crew members were about 18.7 percent more likely to survive than passengers, no matter how much time it took a ship to sink.

"The later observation is certainly not what one would expect given that the crew, and the captain in particular, are responsible for evacuating the passengers before putting themselves in safety," Erixson wrote in an email.

The researchers also found that women fared the worst on British ships, despite the fact that more "women and children first" orders were given on British ships than on others.

"Although maritime disasters are tragic events, they can contribute to our understanding of how people behave under extreme stress and when it is a matter of life and death," said Elinder in a statement.

When Student Loans are in Default - There are ... - 50 Plus Finance

Student Loan Debt Bubble, 1980-2011?(Photo credit: Occupy* Posters)

Student loan default is a growing problem in the U.S. today. As much as a quarter of all student loan borrowers are one to two months behind on their monthly payment according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Add to that millions of federal student loan borrowers have already defaulted on their loans.

A lack of jobs is one of the reasons for this happening. The unemployment rate for college students that have recently graduated is more than twice that of the regular workforce. Because of this, one-third of college students under age 25 have jobs that do not use their recently?acquired?degree.

Over the past decade, student debt has grown to an average of over $22,000 for graduates of public colleges and universities and over $28,000 for private school grads. That?s a 20% increase. A growing number of borrowers ? greater than one in eight ? have debts of $50,000 or more. For too many, this grim economic reality makes making each loan payment in-full and on-time a monthly struggle.

These college students, who are in default, do not realize there can be thousands of dollars of fees and penalties they are liable to pay. Their credit will be damaged for many years to come and it will keep them from acquiring new debt like consumer loans, car loans, and mortgages. The worse part they do not realize is that even through bankruptcy you can not discharge a student loan. The debt you have acquired will be with you until you pay it off.

The only good point to being in default is you cannot qualify for income-based repayment, an alternative payment plan can have a monthly payment as low as zero for extremely low income borrowers.

If you?ve fallen behind on your loans, check out the new web tool, available on ConsumerFinance.gov and at the new StudentAid.gov, launched by the U.S. Department of Education.

When power corrupts: Penn State struggles with tarnished legacy

Penn State awaits a new school year, and a fresh start, in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

Penn?State?s?torturous timeline, spanning from last November to last week, cast a pall over the sport that could have hardly been fathomed this time last year.

Jerry Sandusky?s pathetic mug shot, the Freeh Report, Joe Paterno?s eradicated legacy and NCAA President Mark Emmert?s recitation Monday of unprecedented sanctions have left a football nation dazed and confused.

?In one form or fashion it has affected us,? Commissioner Jim Delany said in his opening statements this week at Big Ten media days.

The Aug. 30 opening bell can?t get here soon enough as we eagerly anticipate the return to trivial pursuits. Before we move on, though, we reflect.

What happened here? What happens now?

The lasting take-away of?Penn?State?is biblically obvious: The consolidation of power in the hands of a few, over time, is poisonous.

Lord Acton, the historian and moralist, opined in another century: ?Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.?

Acton?s next line, not as often repeated, is ?great men are almost always bad men.?

Nowhere is it easier for power to corrupt than in the upstairs office of a powerful football coach. The thirst for victory, combined with money, combined with alma mater mania, has elevated conquering coaches to kings.

The reason?Penn?State?s?insular circle thought they could conceal secrets and handle problems internally is because they always had.

Paterno?s avuncular ?JoePa? public persona, philanthropy and win-loss record provided cover for more ruthless, pragmatic, day-to-day operations.

Power corrupted at incomparable levels at?Penn?State, but it also corrupted Jim Tressel at Ohio?State, and maybe Pete Carroll at USC.

?No one program, no one person, no matter how popular, no matter how successful, can be allowed to derail the soul of an institution,? Commissioner Mike Slive said at the Southeastern Conference?s recent media days.

No one would disagree, yet some would also note a school in his king-maker conference, Alabama, practices the custom of erecting a statue of each coach who has won a national football championship.

Nick Saban, two-time Bowl Championship Series winner in Tuscaloosa, walks by his bust every day on the way to work.

Can we teach old dogs new tricks? Increasing giving through Wills ...

We?re delighted to have this guest post from Ross Anderson, Director on the Board of the Include a Charity campaign and Christopher Baker, a Research Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Centre for Social Investment and Philanthropy. There are few people in Australia better placed to talk about charitable giving via Wills.

We all know that there is significant demographic change underway in Australia.? The next decade will see Australia?s population exceed 25 million and age dramatically. It will also see members of the population boom that followed the end of World War II (Baby Boomers born between 1946-1964) firstly retiring and then ultimately passing away in increasingly large numbers.

Baby Boomers currently comprise 24% of our population, yet they own over 50% of our nation?s private wealth. By 2020, when most of those ?never-grow-old? Baby Boomers will be in their 60?s and 70?s, we will witness the start of the biggest inter-generational wealth transfer in our history.

No wonder charities are stepping-up their efforts to generate increased income from gifts in Wills. This is one of the most logical and obvious sustainable funding strategies that they could possibly adopt given these demographic predictions. But we must act together now to truly harness the powerful philanthropic effects of an increasing mortality rate and the intergenerational transfer of huge wealth that is anticipated to occur over the next 40 years.

What do we know about this form of philanthropy?

Not that much as it happens. We know that charitable giving through Wills in Australia is wildly out of kilter with levels of ?giving whilst living? via the support we give to charities whilst we?re alive.

The latest ATO figures show that 4.4 million Australian taxpayers (or 35.55% of the Australian taxpaying population) made tax-deductible donations totalling $1.96bn in 2009-10. Other studies estimate that almost 90% of us support charities in some shape or form.

So why is it that only 7% of us have been sufficiently inspired to include gifts to our favourite charities in our Wills?

A detailed study at Swinburne University of Technology of 1,700 Victorian wills has provided the statistical evidence for what you might have already expected to hear.?? The overwhelming majority of us leave all of our accumulated wealth to our immediate family members: first to our spouses, then to our children.? It doesn?t seem to matter how much wealth we?ve accumulated or whether or not we have contributed generously and passionately to charitable causes throughout our lives, when it comes to dividing up our estates ? charities essentially don?t get a look in.

The question this raises is whether or not f this role modelling by older Australians has ?doomed future generations to repeat this same pattern of estate-planning and overlook charitable giving? in their Wills too?

Let?s be clear, of course looking after our families comes first in most cases.? ?Adequately providing for those who are dependent on our financial support during our lifetimes is an important aspect of our estate-planning and decision-making. Our current family provision legislation and our ability to challenge the final wishes set out in our Wills ensures that the legal system makes this a reality.

There are however more significant levels of charitable giving through Wills in comparative countries:

In the UK, despite the fact that a very healthy looking 16% of British Wills that went into probate last year contained charitable gifts, the UK Government has introduced substantial financial incentives in an attempt to encourage further giving from personal estates to charitable causes (see www.legacy10.com? for more information).

In the US, the latest figures show that charitable giving through American Wills increased over 12% in the last year to a total of US$24.41 billion.

With our current levels of giving, Australia sits very low down on the league table of charitable giving from Wills.? We don?t believe this is something to be proud of.? We do see it however as a significant opportunity to improve.? The big question we face is ?What we can do to inspire more Australians to leave money to charitable causes in their Wills??

So, what can we do?

Many Australians will be shocked to learn that so few of us make any charitable provision what-so-ever in our Wills.? Given our self-perception as a generous nation, it is unlikely that most of us actually take a considered decision to specifically exclude charities; low participation rates are far more likely to come as a result of a general lack of awareness or falsely perceived barriers getting in the way.

Our current behaviour is unlikely to change without a collaborative and systematic approach to improving our attitude towards charitable giving through our Wills.? This is not an either / or decision. The challenge is not to try and get Australians to leave their entire estates to charities instead of their families.? The challenge is to get most of us to a point where we can consider leaving most of our estates to our families AND to include gifts as a small portion of our estates to our favourite charities.

The Include a Charity campaign (www.includeacharity.com.au) is a practical response to that very challenge. With some realistic, measurable and achievable goals in its attempts to bring about wide-scale social change, this is one of the only true cross-sector initiatives led by 140 Australian charities. With ambitious plans for further collaborative, collective joint impact initiatives, this is one social change campaign to watch.

The campaign has already delivered a wide range of targeted activities to introduce the idea of including charitable gifts in the nation?s Wills to a wider public audience. It is also seeking to increase the skills and sophistication of all in the sector in our efforts to encourage more Australians to take the step of including a charity when preparing their Wills.

We know that the challenge of tipping the very strong prevailing social norm in estate-planning away from thinking about ?family only? and towards thinking in terms of ?family first, philanthropy second? is large indeed.? It is important to the sector and to wellbeing of Australian society that we are able to make some significant inroads to change the current behaviour in estate-planning.

Arguably we have a window of opportunity to change Australian?s attitudes towards charitable gifts in their Wills of some 10 years.? If Baby Boomers start to include more charitable gifts in their Wills now, the sector will start to receive significantly increased income from this generation over the next 10-20 years.

We?d like to hear from you

The Include a Charity campaign is open to your suggestions and ideas.? We?d love to hear your reflections on what you think is needed to change our behaviour.

  • ?How can we work together to inspire older Australians to act philanthropically, supporting their favourite causes at the same time as making sure their families are provided for?
  • Are Australian children entitled to challenge their parents from ?spending the kids? inheritance??
  • Does the Government have a role to play in incentivising more charitable giving through Wills?

Is Any Group Challenging the Canadian Prime Minister's Efforts to Weaken Environmental Protections?

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, POWER POLITICS: Green leaders say Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper's motives for weakening environmental protections stem from his interest in expanding and exploiting Canada's tar sands oil and gas deposits, which constitute the second-largest petroleum reserve in the world (after Saudi Arabia's). Image: iStockPhoto

Dear EarthTalk: Why were some environmental Web sites blacked out all day back on June 4? Was this some sort of protest or did they get hacked??Ned Cooper, Detroit

It wasn?t hackers this time. In fact, a group of environmental and social justice organizations representing millions of Canadians blacked out their websites for 24 hours this past June 4 to protest efforts by Canada?s conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper to push through a budget bill that would significantly weaken environmental protections.

Organizations leading the black-out include the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, the David Suzuki Foundation, Ecojustice, Greenpeace, Nature Canada, Sierra Club Canada and World Wildlife Fund Canada, and several others. More than 13,000 other websites?including those of many major U.S. green groups including the Sierra Club?also participated in the black-out and continue to support the effort calling for stronger, not weaker, environmental protections. Reports the Black Out Speak Out website: ?The environmental changes are particularly undemocratic and worrisome given the extent to which the government is going to please powerful oil interests...?

Green leaders say Harper?s motives stem from his interest in expanding and exploiting Canada?s tar sands oil and gas deposits, which constitute the second largest petroleum reserve in the world (after Saudi Arabia?s). ?Harper?s attacks are happening for many reasons, not the least of which was the success of environmental groups in Canada, the U.S. and Europe in threatening what Big Oil wants most: unlimited tar sands expansion and pipelines like the Keystone XL to send its oil around the globe,? reports Michael Marx, director of the U.S. Sierra Club?s Beyond Oil campaign, on the Huffington Post website. ?He put the interests of the oil industry first and looked the other way when it came to enforcing laws about air and water pollution, endangered species and the health of downstream communities.?

Marx says that ?tar sands oil companies are destroying a pristine forest the size of England, accelerating the rate of climate change, causing thousands of wolves, bears, migratory birds, and caribou to die, and leaching toxic chemicals into rivers, as downstream communities experience a spike in cancer rates.?

According to Marx, Harper?s government is trying to disarm its opposition by threatening the charitable status (and thus the fundraising ability) of green groups who oppose tar sands, subjecting them to onerous tax reporting requirements to bog them down. ??Black Out, Speak Out? is a warning that the Harper Government has gone too far,? says Marx. ?This protest has brought together a diverse array of Canadians to defend their democracy and right to have an open debate about the future of their country.?

?Hopefully Black Out, Speak Out will mobilize thousands of Canadians and Harper will learn that it?s one thing to attack environmentalists and quite another to attack freedom of speech,? says Marx. ?If the Harper government pursues this repressive policy, it should expect the backlash to spread in Canada, the U.S. and in Europe.?

Setting Up Health Insurance Exchanges: What Are States Doing?

Health insurance exchanges form the backbone of the private insurance reforms called for in the Affordable Care Act, as they will create a marketplace in each state for small employers and individuals without job-based health insurance to buy comprehensive health coverage, with premium subsidies available for those with low or moderate incomes.

In a new Commonwealth Fund issue brief, health law and policy expert Sara Rosenbaum and her team at George Washington University analyze the choices being made by the group of states that, together with the District of Columbia, have already begun establishing exchanges, either through legislation or executive order. While the brief reveals a great deal of variation in approach, it also shows a common tendency by states to accord their new exchanges considerable flexibility in making decisions about how they will operate and what standards they will apply to the insurance products sold.

You can also use the Commonwealth Fund?s?new interactive map that displays state actions taken on health insurance exchanges. The map shows where states are in the continuum of establishing exchanges and provides detail about key exchange provisions in those states that have already passed exchange laws or issued executive orders. We will update this map over time.
