Zscaler Application Profiler (ZAP)

How safe is the mobile app you want? Don?t you think it?s a good idea to find out before you hit the download button??With ZAP, all you have to do is enter in the name of the app (and whether it is an iOS app or an Android app), and ZAP will calculate an overall risk score for the application based on things like authentication, information leakages and exposed content such as advertising or analytics sites. In big switch, Gen X frets about retirement

By Allison Linn, TODAY

Generation X is getting more worried about retirement.

A survey released Monday shows that Americans aged 35 to 44 are now the most worried about financing their retirement,?a stark turnaround from 2009, when people in that age group were among the least worried about money for retirement.

The survey, from?Pew?Social and Demographic Trends,?appears to reflect the lasting impact of the long economic downturn: In general, people of all ages are more pessimistic about retirement than they were three years ago, the researchers found.

About 38 percent of the more than 2,500 people Pew surveyed said they are not that confident they have enough income and assets for retirement. That?s up from 25 percent in 2009, when the nation's economy officially came out of recession.

Pew Research Center

Gen X has grown the most worried about retirement.

The Pew report found that 49 percent of those 35 to 44 were either not too or not at all confident that they would have enough money to live on in retirement, compared with just 20 percent who had that concern in 2009.

The Pew researchers said one reason the Gen-Xers may be feeling doubtful about retirement is that they are less likely to have retirement accounts.?The?percentage of people ages 35 to 44 who have a retirement account has fallen 9 percentage points between 2001 and 2010, to 52 percent, according to Pew's analysis of government data.

Gen X also may be feeling gloomy because they?ve lost so much wealth in recent years.

A Census Bureau study released a few months ago found that those in the 35-44 bracket experienced the biggest percent decline in median household net worth between 2005 and 2010.

Median net worth for those households declined 59 percent during that period, from $80,521 in 2005 to $33,200 in 2010. The figures are adjusted for 2010 dollars.

The Census Bureau report also found that 45- to 54-year-olds saw the biggest hit in terms of actual dollars lost during between 2005 and 2010.

People in that age group also are feeling much more pessimistic about retirement than they were three years ago, the Pew researchers found.

About 43 percent of 45- to 54-year-olds said they feeling less than confident about their chances of having enough to live on in retirement, compared with 33 percent who felt that way three years ago.

The most optimistic group were people over age 65, but even they have grown more antsy. About 28 percent of people who fall in the traditional retirement age window said they were not very confident of having enough retirement savings to live in, compared with 19 percent who felt that way three years ago.

Principals Roundtable: Tighter Fees a Huge Challenge

by Staff | Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Nokia in Silicon Valley by Gensler, the firm ranked number one in Interior Design's Top 100 Giants according to earnings; however, many firms still struggle to attain their pre-recession level fees. Photo by Nic Lehoux.

This is the first in a series of articles that will cover the main issues discussed at the recent principals roundtable held by Interior Design and IIDA at NeoCon East in Baltimore, Md.

It should come as no surprise that the 20 or so top executives of design and architectural firms who attended Interior Design and IIDA?s principal?s roundtable last week agreed that they are working harder, longer and more intensely than ever before. The kicker, however, is that they are also earning the same or even less than they earned prior to the 2008 recession.

?Clients expect more, but aren?t willing to pay more,? said an executive of a large global design firm. (To ensure a frank and open conversation about the high priority issues impacting the design industry, Interior Design and IIDA agreed not to identify attendees.)

In fact, many who attended the roundtable held at last week?s NeoCon East in Baltimore, Md., don?t see the shrinking fee structure changing any time soon. ?They want more services for less,? said a principal of a mid-sized design firm. ??The problem is that as the fees go down, it is hard to get them back up again. This impacts everything.?

To understand how tighter fees have impacted companies, many in the group noted that firms used to assign ten designers to a project and now assign only three. Even working and focusing on one project is a luxury from a bygone era, with most designers tackling several at once to be more cost-effective.

Question: Are stagnant or declining fees for the same or more work than you did four to five years ago the number one issue facing design firms today?? Respond here.

Most assigned the blame to brokerage firms who are branching out into areas traditionally handled by design or architecture firms. ?Brokers are setting the tone, sending out RFPs to firms and telling clients that this is the way to get the best price,? said an executive of a large design firm, adding that brokers are also moving into the planning and programming stages. This, she said, is happening increasingly in the corporate field.

Added another design executive: ?The best value is not finding the cheapest partner, the cheapest designer or architect? but that?s what they are hearing from the brokers.?? The group agreed that sometimes a broker would advise a client to go for a higher priced space, convincing them that they can save on the build out. This often leads to unrealistic expectations when it comes to the fees and scope of work.

?The solution is to write concise, tight contracts. We will do these five things for this much,? said one executive from a large design firm, adding that clients usually understand once you show them that that their requests are outside the agreed upon scope. Still, she pointed out, a firm is more constrained with new clients compared with repeat clients who have worked through the issue before.? Nevertheless, she said: ? It can?t be architecture by the pound.?

Question: Do you find the increasing influence that brokers have with clients hurts your business and creates unrealistic expectations? ?Respond here.

Still, business has picked up with multi-family, healthcare and higher education leading the way. It?s an increase relegated to certain regions of the country, with a strong showing in the D.C. areas, for example, thanks in part to government projects. ?The work is healthy, but the fee structure is not,? said one design executive, adding that her practice is inundated with work due to new construction. ?Still it?s hard to make money. You can?t deliver the hip, the cool and the new at this fee structure.?

And that, on nearly every level, is what clients are looking for? and expect without having to pay additional for it.

Next week: A look at how Hospitality?s growing influence across all market segments has impacted how design firms work and compete.

Motorola Solutions outs HC1 head-mounted computer, keeps workers' hands free in sticky situations (update: video)

Motorola Solutions HC1 headmounted computer

We're very familiar with Kopin's Golden-i, but it was surprising that an early collaboration with Motorola Solutions didn't immediately lead to Motorola selling the head-mounted computer on its own. That odd discrepancy is being patched up now that Motorola Solutions' HC1 is here. The design keeps its signature micro-display, head tracking and voice commands, but sees a slight repurposing from Kopin's focus on security: Motorola Solutions' attention is on giving construction workers, field technicians and soldiers an always-up computer that keeps their hands free when it would be too dangerous (or just unwieldy) to grab a handheld. We haven't been told if the HC1 has been upgraded to that promised TI OMAP 4 chip, although we do know that there's an optional camera to bring on the Aliens-style video feeds as well as pairing support that offers cellular data, GPS and voice calls when linked to the right phone or hotspot. Whether or not the HC1 keeps the Golden-i's $2,500 price is an unknown as well -- that said, the corporate emphasis is more likely to see bulk sales of the wearable PC than any kind of scrimping and saving.

Update: You'll find an official clip for the HC1 after the break. The clip also confirms that there's no OMAP 4 in this version.

89% Compliance

All Critics (84) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (75) | Rotten (9)

The point of Compliance, which caused walkouts and shouting matches when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, is how we are programmed to do things that go against our natural instincts as long as we believe we have the law on our side.

This is one insistent film, more evocative of human behavior than movies that take fewer risks ever could be.

Like a John Hughes movie hijacked by Roman Polanski, this troubling indie effort lays bare the sadomasochism of the American workplace.

Zobel, a second-time feature filmmaker, has put together a skillful, sympathetic but unsparing re-enactment of a small-scale atrocity, and his cast plays it out with natural, understated performances.

Zobel's masterful direction and screenplay heighten the distress of authority figures possessing unseen persuasion over naive employees, exposing a disturbing and haunting look at what some workers are willing to do in order to follow orders.

This is a well-made film, with plausible performances by all the leads, especially Ann Dowd. We feel we know people like this.

Morally complex look at human behavior leaves you shaking your head in disbelief

Dowd's performance -- showing Sandra's eagerness to please the "cop" and her hesitancy to follow orders -- burns in the mind long after the movie's over.

One of the most deeply disturbing movies of recent vintage.

There's the adage that life is nasty, brutish and short. It's even worse when you're half-naked and locked in a supply room with your boss.

Its skillfully constructed scene-setting montages, its fraught, gliding camera moves and attractive compositions seem judgmental, suggesting the filmmakers are superior to and more sensitive, certainly, than the characters.

'Compliance' takes an extremely unpleasant and nauseating experience for everyone involved and puts this masterful spin on it to make it not only watchable, but a really solid piece of film overall.

There's a humanity here, even for the restaurant manager. But that still doesn't make "Compliance" easy to ingest.

... a sadomasochistic mind-trip ... It has the lingering impact of a gruesome freeway pileup ? you don't want to look, but you can't help yourself.

Compliance will leave you shocked and offended, but it misses out on any opportunity to be anything outside of a dramatization.

Compliance is a difficult film to watch -- walkouts have been reported at more than one screening -- but it's also a calculating and intimate deconstruction of the greater social ills that our fast-food nation faces as a whole.

This psychodrama of ill-advised behavior may well leave you feeling dirty...for what you've watched helplessly and perhaps for what you've countenanced as an American citizen.

So long as you can tolerate the frustration it fosters, it's hard not to appreciate such intelligent provocation.

Perhaps the most disturbing movie of the year. Not a horror film, but given that we can't excuse the behavior as belonging to illegal aliens or felons eluding of the law ... maybe it's a new strain of horror after all.

For once, the title card "Based on true events" is not some cheap gimmick to lend a story importance; it is a despondent cry of shock, disbelief, and, above all, outrage.

Bravely uncomfortable and sure to inspire heated post-movie (and likely mid-movie) conversation, Compliance is haunting, positively enraging when it sinks in that this was no nightmare, but a reality.

A disturbing, fact-based look at the ways in which people can be bullied into bowing to the demands of authority figures.

A BLOG ABOUT LOVE: Love...or Love Addiction?

When I was in my twenties - oh man - I had a very immature view of love.? I was once dating a guy and felt a lot of "love" for him.? But it turns out that we had completely different lifestyles and goals (he was a very good person, but we just weren't even close to being a good match or being on the same desired path).? Deep down, I was actually kind of embarrassed about the relationship because it was SO CLEAR to me and everyone else that we were not a good match, but yet I remained with him for a long time - even with a pit in my stomach.? And why was I with him?? Because he loved me.? He really loved me a lot.? And so I felt "love" for him back.? How could I not?? He showered me with attention, he was thoughtful, affectionate, etc.? Who doesn't love to be loved?? It's very, very easy to love that attention and companionship.? It feels amazing.? Even when your gut says this isn't a good match or you don't fully respect this person's choices in life, the idea of being loved and "being in love" can feel so good that it's like an addiction that you just can't get rid of - you just can't let it go.?? You may even hold onto it for dear life.

To my dear readers - are you in a relationship and feeling some agony about it in your gut, yet at the same time feeling like you are "in love" and feeling "love" for this partner?? CONFUSING, right?? Are you in love with someone who actually would not impress you if you stepped back and watched him/her from the sidelines in their lives?? Are you in love with someone, yet in your gut, you have a nagging feeling that this isn't the best decision to be with this person?? If so...

consider the idea that you might be "in love with the idea of being in love."

I hope this makes sense.? And if you think this could be you, know that you certainly are not alone.? I've talked to so many women who have been there.? In fact, we've probably all been there at least once.

Here are two things that I think contribute to this problem...

1.? LOW SELF-WORTH.

2.? SEX.? (yep)

Let me explain... :)

1.? LOW SELF WORTH.
This is the easy one.? ha.? Self-worth is soooo crucial in dating.? Oh my goodness.? Please, please...if you are struggling with this, tackle it head on.? Try to overcome this.? It will help you tremendously as you date and try to decide who to marry one day.? Without self worth, it's easy to feel a little desperate.? It's easy to look past major red flags in a relationship simply because you want so desperately to be loved.? Without self-worth, it's easy to get yourself into some pickles.? It's easy to stay in a relationship for all the wrong reasons.? It's easy to latch on to anyone who throws you a bone.? It's easy to think that you won't be WHOLE until you find a partner or a spouse.? It's easy to feel as though finding a partner is the only thing that matters, and that life is really in a holding pattern until you meet "the one" who will make everything feel complete.? I hope you can see how detrimental this can be in a relationship.? Someone with low self-worth often demands that their partner make them whole; they rely on someone else to provide them with happiness.? Oh dear.? This thinking is NOT HEALTHY.? This will not lead to a healthy relationship.? This will lead to one big roller coaster.

If you feel your self-worth really could use a boost, there is hope for you!? :)? And I think feeling this way is really quite normal, actually.? But...PLEASE CHOOSE TO IMPROVE!? :)? There are so many things you can do!? Here are some ideas to get you started, though I am sure there are many more (if you have anything to add, please leave it in the comments!)

  • Find a professional you can connect with who can walk you through overcoming this (keep shopping around for a good fit, if necessary!)
  • Ask someone you already know and respect to coach you.? A self-worth mentor!? Why not?
  • Go find a church or a supportive community!? Churches can be amazing in helping people to understand their value.? The Mormon church has been instrumental in helping me to develop my self-worth.? Though there are certainly so many organizations that could help in this area.? I recommend finding one!? :)
  • Speak with a spiritual leader or healer.? To me, healing on a spiritual level can bring about the most powerful changes I've ever seen in people of all faiths and belief systems.
  • Get some exercise.? This can do wonders!!
  • Get a Dr. check-up - make sure your hormones, Vitamin D levels, thyroid and other triggers are in check.? Physical imbalances can make you feel down about yourself and your life.? You can help the situation a lot by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
  • Do activities that make you feel positively about yourself.? Serve others.? Find a hobby.? Play an instrument.? Do something daring.
  • Become a seeker.? Try to figure this out.? Read books by experts like Brene Brown & Eckart Tolle.? Talk to friends.? Take classes.? Search philosophy and scripture.?
  • Replace the negative script in your head with a more positive script until those positive words become your belief system.??

2.? SEX.??
OK, I think sex plays a huge part in getting addicted to "love".? You see, sex creates a powerful bond between two people; it DOES create a desire to be with someone.? In fact, that's why it's so dang amazing for a husband and wife to have it in their marriage.? :)? There are few things more powerful than sex.? BUT, when two people who are unmarried and who are still trying to figure out who and when to marry and how to make the best decisions for their lives.....sex can really, really muddy the decision making process; it can make your brain go to mush.? You see, sex creates feelings of love, safety, security, desire and bonding.? But it can create those same feelings EVEN IF you are with someone who you know deep down is not a good match for you.? In other words, you could become bonded with the wrong person, with a jerk, with someone who is not ready for marriage, with someone who is not treating you well.? You may not even be on the same page in life at all!? Yet sex can bond you and make you feel enhanced feelings of being "in love" with each other.? Talk about getting yourself stuck in a difficult and confusing situation.? Some may think I'm old fashioned on this, but I believe in empowering women (and men) before they get married, when at all possible.? I think if you remove sex from the equation, it leads to less long-term roller coaster relationships that should have ended a long time ago.? It leads to less devastating, heart wrenching, messy break ups that can feel like a divorce.? Instead, it provides an opportunity for people to think more clearly and therefore make better decisions regarding marriage.? And because of that, I'm all for it!??

__________________________________________________________________________________

I'd love to hear your thoughts! Do you think I'm off my rocker?? Spot on?? :)

And, do you think you've ever been in a relationship because you were addicted to "love"???Any wisdom or thoughts to pass along?

Deep-rooted rifts had given rise to terrorism: CJP | Daily Balochistan ...

LAHORE: Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said on Saturday that all religions of the world including Islam, teach peace and tolerance.
Addressing an International Law Conference at a local hotel, he said that peaceful methods of settlement of disputes were the preferred option of contemporary religions.
?There have been examples where religious leaders and institutions succeeded in bringing peace through mediation and other peaceful alternatives,? he added.
He said it was unfortunate that human race was fragmented into ethnic sects and groups without understanding the true spirit of religious thought and philosophy.
He said deep-rooted rifts had given rise to terrorism, bloodshed, extra-judicial killings and other evils that were perpetuating extremism and radicalism and affecting global peace.
He said the best way to address issues was through bridging gaps among individuals and states by common understanding and sharing of knowledge about law.
He said that restoration of peace and harmony through adherence to the rule of law was the increasingly acceptable mean for resolving conflicts and terrorism, be it at international or domestic level.
?In societies where the rule of law is weak the law loses it force which leads the masses to violence and transgression,? he added.
He said, ?The greatest contribution that the law makes is that it makes peace through pacific settlements possible. Law is an instrument of peace primarily because it creates the possibility of durable and amicable settlements. As a secondary role, the law is also helpful in dealing fairly with those who have already violated society?s peace.?
He said that in the last five years Pakistan?s lawyers stood up for the rule of law in all areas of life, adding that once people began to stand for the rule of law many conflicts which previously seemed impossible to resolve, started to die down and peace was once again in sight.
He said, ?History teaches us that the most successful way for long-term resolution of conflicts is through law i.e through constitutionalism. ?Nation which value the constitution and its strict application have been successful in overcoming challenges and resolving conflicts,? he added.
He said that scholars were unanimous in reaching the conclusion that successive violations of the constitution and deviations from the rule of law, led us astray and eroded the rule of law in Pakistan.
?The cumulative effect of constitutional deviations and a weak rule of law in the past resulted in the present day militant and terrorist tendencies in certain regions of our country. The state has to respond and counter these militant organizations while responses, however, have to be within the framework of the constitution,? he added.
He said if the constitutional and law had been strictly followed, there would have been no room for resorting to terrorism and all outstanding issues could have been resolved. ?A cursory look at world history reveals the fact that economic development and law are intrinsically linked,? he added.
He said that societies where discretionary powers swayed rule-based governance and where individuals were stronger than institutions, the result was choas and anarchy where everybody loses in the end. ?The present superior judiciary in the country is making efforts that the rule of law prevails and corruption is rooted out from the system and that a transparent and rule-based environment is created where investment flourishes,? he added.
He said the electronic and print media had played a great role in sensitizing the people of Pakistan about the importance of the rule of law and supremacy of the constitution.
He said he believed that in the presence of the media the movement of the rule of law and supremacy of the constitution would succeed despite some concerted efforts on part of status quo-oriented powers to disrupt the flow of history.
He said, ?In the last decade, my learned brothers in the Supreme Court and I have had the privilege to give our constitutional jurisprudence a new direction. Law promise is real and if one stands for it, he is richly rewarded and one of the rewards is peace in society, leading to economic growth, flourishing trade, attraction of local and foreign investment etc.?
The Chief Justice also quoted several Quranic verses and Hadiths to highlight his viewpoint.
Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Yaseen Azad said that supremacy of the constitution, the rule of law and strengthening of institutions were important for democracy.
?Yesterday, the Supreme Court made a historic decision that institutions which do not have any role under the constitution should not take part in politics,? he added.
Supreme Court of Pakistan Justice Tassadaq Hussain Jillani, Sindh High Court Chief Justice Mushir Alam, Indian Supreme Court Bar Assocation President Pravin H Parekh, Supreme Court of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, Pakistan Bar Council Vice Chairman Akhtar Hussain, Supreme Court of Pakistan Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk and others also spoke on the occasion.-APP

Father, 4-year-old son killed in Calif. shooting; three wounded

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) ? A father and his 4-year-old son were killed and a woman and two other young children were wounded by a gunman wearing a painter's mask who set fire to their home near Los Angeles early Saturday, authorities said.

Inglewood Police Chief Mark Fronterotta told KABC-TV that a SWAT team set up a perimeter and was using dogs to search for the attacker, who may have lived in a rear house on the property. Investigators were trying to determine whether the suspect fled or remained in the house as it burned.

Fronterotta said the man wore a painter's mask, apparently to shield his identity.

Television footage showed a home gutted by flames and a plume of smoke rising over the residential neighborhood early Saturday.

Detectives determined the suspect set the house ablaze before opening fire with a weapon, Fronterotta said. Earlier the chief said the blaze was started after the gun attack.

Five neighboring houses were evacuated. Other nearby residents were told to remain inside with their doors locked. The suspect was described as armed and dangerous.

A 6-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl were in critical condition, Fronterotta said. The woman, said to be the children's mother, was being treated for gunshot wounds to the knee and pelvis. An 8-year-old boy was uninjured.

The father was shielding two of his children when he was shot, the chief said. After being shot, the mother carried the wounded 4-year-old to a neighbor's yard. The boy later died.

Police have no motive.

Beirut bombing sparks protests aimed at Syria

Mahmoud Zayyat / AFP - Getty Images

By NBC News staff and wire services

BEIRUT -?Protesters burned tires and set up roadblocks around Lebanon on Saturday in a sign of boiling anger over the killings of a top security official and seven others, while Lebanon's prime minister said he suspected a Syrian connection in the bombing.

At a press conference, Prime Minister Najib Mikati?said he suspected the bombing was related to the indictment in August of former minister Michel Samaha, a supporter of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, over a plot allegedly aimed at stoking violence in Lebanon.

"I cannot separate in any way the crime that took place yesterday and the discovery of the conspiracy against Lebanon in August," he said.?

Other?Lebanese politicians have also accused Assad of being behind the attack, deepening fears that Syria's sectarian-tinged civil war is spreading to its neighbor.?

NBC News producer Paul Nassar reported an unusual calm had swept over Beirut.?

"The city is dead, absolutely quiet," Nassar, reporting from Beirut, said. "All the major shopping districts are closed -- this city would usually be brimming with activity, but now, nothing."

Nassar added that the bomb was an especially devastating blow to the city because it came on the cusp of the major Islam holiday Eid, which starts next weekend.

"Hotels that were close to capacity are now looking at 20 percent" of rooms full after tourists scrambled to cancel their reservations, Nassar reported.

In the eastern Bekaa Valley region, the Lebanese army opened fire on a group who were blocking a road to protest the bomb attack, wounding?two people.

"The Lebanese army were trying to open the road and started firing their guns," a witness from the village of Bar Elias, told The Associated Press.

Meanwhile, the Lebanese Cabinet held an emergency meeting as the country's opposition called for Mikati to resign.?

The government declared a national day of mourning for the victims, who included Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, head of the intelligence division of Lebanon's domestic security forces. Dozens were wounded in Friday's blast in Beirut's mainly Christian Achrafieh neighborhood.?

Many observers said the attack appeared to have links to the Syrian civil war, which has been raging for 19 months. Al-Hassan, 47, headed an investigation over the summer that led to the arrest of former Information Minister Michel Samaha, one of Syrian President Bashar Assad's most loyal allies in Lebanon.?

Samaha, who is in custody, is accused of plotting a campaign of bombings and assassinations to spread sectarian violence in Lebanon at Syria's behest. Also indicted in the August sweep was Syrian Brig. Gen. Ali Mamlouk, one of Assad's highest aides.?

Al-Hassan also played a role in the investigation of the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri with a massive truck bomb. A U.N.-backed tribunal has indicted four members of militant group Hezbollah, which along with its allies, now holds a majority in Lebanon's Cabinet. Hezbollah denies involvement in Hariri's killing and has refused to extradite the suspects.?

Al-Hassan's department also had a role in breaking up several Israeli spy rings inside Lebanon over the past few years, Lebanese officials said.?

Lebanon's fractious politics are closely entwined with Syria's. The countries share a web of political and sectarian ties and rivalries, often causing events on one side of the border to echo on the other. Lebanon's opposition is an anti-Syrian bloc, while the prime minister and much of the government are pro-Syrian.?

The civil war in Syria has laid bare Lebanon's sectarian tensions as well.?

Many of Lebanon's Sunni Muslims have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Shiite Muslims have tended to back Assad. Al-Hassan was a Sunni whose stances were widely seen to oppose Syria and Shiite Hezbollah, the country's most powerful ally in Lebanon.?

Lebanon's top Sunni cleric, Grand Mufti Mohammed Rashid Kabbani, condemned the assassination, calling it a "criminal explosion that targets Lebanon and its people." He called for self-restraint saying that "the criminal will get his punishment sooner or later."?

Police and army troops sealed off the site of Friday's blast as military intelligence agents investigated what was the deadliest bombing in Beirut in four years.?

Sharbal Abdo, a Beirut resident who lives down the block from where the car bomb detonated, on Saturday brought his six-year-old son Chris and 12-year-old daughter Jane to see what happened the day before. They were both at school when the blast ripped through the area.?

"They were very afraid yesterday, and cried a lot late into the night," Abdo said. "Today I decided to bring them here and show what happened. They need to face this situation. It may be their future."?

On Friday, protesters in mostly Sunni areas closed roads with burning tires and rocks in Beirut, the southern city of Sidon, the northern city of Tripoli and several towns in the eastern Bekaa Valley.?

The highway linking central Beirut with the city's international airport was closed, as well as the highway that links the capital with Syria, the officials said on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.?

"The side that carried the assassination knows the reactions and dangerous repercussions and is betting that it will happen. Strife is wanted in Lebanon," Khoury wrote.?

Presidential debates offer body language tips for job interviews

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? Considering President Barack Obama and GOP nominee Mitt Romney are seeking the nation's top job, watching Monday's Presidential debate could be just the prep needed to ace your next job interview.

Sound like a bunch of malarkey? Not so fast.

While pointing fingers, interrupting and smirking are never recommended in a professional setting, job seekers can learn a lot from the candidates' speech and body language, according to Melvin Scales, executive coach and Wake Forest University Schools of Business Assistant Director of Student Career Services.

"Regardless of your political affiliation, the debates are a one-stop shop for observing what body language and speech styles reflect the impression you want to leave with a potential employer," said Scales, who has more than 35 years of combined executive coaching and brand management experience. "Job candidates should seem confident, not cocky. When it comes to composure, practice makes perfect, regardless of the setting."

Given that we only have seven seconds to make a good first impression, it's important to make every second count. Scales said 75 percent of that impression comes from body language such as strong eye contact, a slight smile and a firm handshake; pleasant conversation accounts for the other 25 percent.

At Wake Forest, Scales coaches students to control their body language using a technique he calls "head, shoulders, knees and toes."

Head

? Keep your eyes focused on the interviewer without staring. Blink, but don't wink.

? Smile now and then to assure the interviewer that you understand what is being asked, as well as during your responses. This generates confidence.

? Don't look up or from side to side when responding to a question. Averting your gaze makes you seem less certain, trustworthy and truthful.

Shoulders

? Keep your back straight, head up and with your arms at your side or hands clasped below your waist.

? Minimize the use of your hands during the interview. They should remain below shoulder level at all times.

? When you want to make an emphatic point, lean slightly towards the interviewer without invading his or her space, which is about three feet.

Knees and Toes

? Men should sit with backs straight and feet flat on the floor. Women's legs should be crossed at the ankles underneath the chair.

? If part of the interview is conducted while walking and talking or standing, be careful not to shift your weight or rock.

"While job interviews are hardly the confrontational settings we see in debates, they are a good reminder that talking over others is never okay," said Scales. "Often the most memorable moments of political debates are of what not to do. When job seekers see how distracting taking copius notes, gulping down water and laughing off questions can be, they will be less likely to make those mistakes."

Turn Your Vacuum into a Computer Cleaner with a Ketchup Squeeze Bottle Top [Clever Uses]

Turn Your Vacuum into a Computer Cleaner with a Ketchup Squeeze Bottle TopMost vacuums come with a tube that works with several including attachments so that you can clean areas the vacuum, itself, can't go. These attachments are still too large to clean out your keyboard or parts of your computer, but you can solve that properly with the aid of a ketchup squeeze bottle top.

Tumblr user mintfish points to this clever solution. You can't use the top of a standard squeeze bottle that you'd buy in the store, but rather the old-fashioned kind you'd find at a classic diner. (See the picture above for an example). In some cases the top might fit right on, but you may have to tape it in the event your vacuum tube is a little smaller. Either way, once you have the top adhered you can use it to vacuum small areas like between your keyboard. Of course, there are plenty of other options for keybord cleaning, too.

Study succeeds in cutting inappropriate antibiotic prescribing by pediatricians

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) ? A study involving one of the nation's largest networks of pediatric practices was able to nearly halve the inappropriate use of antibiotics through quarterly monitoring and feedback of the physicians' prescribing patterns. The research, which is being presented at IDWeek, is one of the first to look at an antimicrobial stewardship intervention in the outpatient setting.

Although efforts to cut the overuse of antibiotics have made headway in hospitals, the majority of prescriptions are written by community-based clinicians -- often for pediatric patients with common ailments. "If you really want to impact antibiotic use, you have to do it with outpatient prescribing," said lead researcher Jeffrey Gerber, MD, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "Our message is that targeting common conditions and intervening in the outpatient setting is doable."

Indeed, the study looked at three common respiratory tract infections in children and greatly affected prescribing in a group of practices after only a year. The biggest impact was with inappropriate use of antibiotics for pneumonia, which dropped from 16 percent to just 4 percent.

The findings are among the significant research being discussed at the inaugural IDWeek meeting, taking place through October 21 in San Diego. With the theme Advancing Science, Improving Care, IDWeek features the latest science and bench-to-bedside approaches in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and epidemiology of infectious diseases, including HIV, across the lifespan. More than 1,500 abstracts from scientists in this country and internationally will be highlighted over the conference's five days.

"Improving antibiotic use is a crucial public health goal and necessary given increasing antibiotic resistance," noted Daniel J. Diekema, MD, an IDWeek chair for the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America. "This study shows that the same approaches we use in hospitals can also improve antibiotic use in clinics. The intervention isn't complicated or high-tech, so it should be 'scalable' to large populations, where it could make a big difference in slowing resistance and preventing the complications of inappropriate antibiotic use."

Gerber and his colleagues at Children's Hospital focused on its affiliated primary care network of more than two dozen practices. Eighteen of those pediatric practices agreed to participate, offering a look at 174 clinicians' prescribing habits in urban, suburban and rural communities from the Main Line of Philadelphia to the New Jersey shore. Over nearly three years, that included more than 1.4 million office visits by 185,212 patients.

The practices were randomly divided into two groups and their prescriptions tracked through the network's electronic health record. The researchers reviewed prescribing for sinusitis, Group A strep throat and pneumonia after omitting cases that involved children with chronic medical conditions, antibiotic allergies or antibiotic use during the three months preceding the study period.

The control group was merely told the study was under way. In the intervention group, however, each practice was given a short lunch-hour refresher on the latest prescribing guidelines recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Additionally, each clinician in the intervention group received quarterly one-page updates on his or her prescribing habits. This feedback showed how individuals compared to the guidelines and to others within their own practice, as well as how practices compared to each other. It involved no clinical decision-making support tools.

The initial data showed that about 28 percent of all children inappropriately received a broad-spectrum antibiotic for a targeted condition -- with the variance across practices ranging from 15 percent to 60 percent.

But after the antibiotic primer session and a year of regular prescribing evaluations, clinicians in the intervention group cut their off-guideline use to 14 percent. The control group rate also declined, but only to 23 percent.

There was little change in the already low prescribing of broad-spectrum antibiotics for strep throat. Inappropriate prescribing for sinusitis had already been trending down in both groups, but it dropped by half, to 20 percent, in the practices that had gotten the refresher and regular feedback.

"The impact in the intervention group was much better than we thought it would be," Gerber said. "It shows that getting people up to speed and providing simple reminders are helpful. It also shows that you can leverage electronic health records to put together a relatively low-maintenance system to improve prescribing."

The researchers say they now need to look at the staying power of their effort. Have clinicians continued to be vigilant or returned to old habits? Gerber acknowledges that pediatricians often are pressured by a clock that requires them to see patients quickly and by families that often demand antibiotics when a child is sick. Writing that prescription sometimes seems like the most expeditious solution.

"We need to know what the important piece of our intervention was, whether the education or the feedback reports," Gerber said. "What we're ultimately hoping is that by improving adherence to prescribing guidelines, we changed the level of treatment success while reducing unnecessary exposure to broad-spectrum antibiotics."

Foreclosures Decline Sept 2012 | Lisa Mescher Real Estate Broker

From ForclosureRadar.com?10/10/2012

September 2012 California Notice of Defaults were down 20.7 percent from the prior month, and down 48.1 percent compared to last year. There has been speculation that the banks would rush to clear inventory before the CA Homeowner Bill of Rights takes affect in January 2013, causing an increase in the number of foreclosures. Clearly this is not the case as we continue to see the number of Foreclosure Starts decline. Notice of Trustee Sales remains basically flat, up 1.9 percent from the prior month.?

September 2012 California Foreclosure Sales are down 17.9 percent from the prior month, and down 30.4 percent compared to last year. However, a larger portion of Trustee Sales, 39.2 percent, are being purchased by investors compared to 27.2 percent last year.?

In the other states in our coverage area, Foreclosure Starts are down with Arizona down 37.1 percent, Nevada down 40.1 percent, Oregon down 40.0 percent, and Washington down 31.2 percent from the prior month. Sales are also down with Arizona down 24.3 percent, Nevada down 19.5 percent, Oregon down 0.3 percent, and Washington down 33.5 percent from the prior month.?

?It was recently reported that the nation?s five largest mortgage servicers have implemented all of the 320 servicing standards required under the national mortgage settlement,? stated Sean O?Toole, Founder & CEO of ForeclosureRadar. ?The continued decline in Foreclosure Starts clearly shows that even though servicers are now apparently in compliance and clear to move forward with foreclosures, they are still in no rush to foreclose on the majority of delinquent borrowers.?

Legions of Frustrated Investors Turn to Real Estate Investing: ?Play ...

Rental Properties in Your IRA

For legions of investors frustrated with puny yields on savings and bonds, slow growth retarding stock market returns, and the usual substantial risk involved in security investing (any given stock or bond can potentially become worthless overnight), we have good news: The combination of declining real estate prices and steady or increasing rents have opened up a window of opportunity in real estate for income-oriented investors. In fact, years after the ?smart money? was selling off real estate ahead of the bubble collapse, we are seeing signs that smart money is getting back in the real estate market. Indeed, up to 20 percent of residential real estate now sold is sold to investors ? and not just to ?play and pray? amateur property flippers, but to value-oriented investors as well, who are seeking to generate immediate positive cash flow.

Advantage for IRA Owners

This is a big development for IRA investors, because generating cash flow sufficient to maintain properties is important for IRA owners. Because you are restricted to $5,000 in new contributions to IRAs every year ($6,000 for those over age 50), you have to pay for any needed repairs or renovations to properties either with cash in the IRA, bringing on a partner, nonrecourse debt financing, or other retirement assets you can roll over into the account. When you can realize immediate positive cash flow from a property, however, net of financing costs and taxes, that takes a lot of the pressure off, and makes owning real estate in an IRA much simpler.

Getting Started in Real Estate IRA Investing

Owning property within an IRA is simple: Open an account with American IRA, a third-party administrator specializing in self-directed retirement accounts. Identify a property, fund the account, and direct us to purchase the property on your IRA?s behalf. We will work with your team of advisors to ensure that the property is titled and held in accordance with the IRS?s regulations pertaining to retirement accounts.

Using Leverage

If you can?t pay cash for the property, you can have your IRA borrow most of the purchase price. Typically, you can finance a property in an IRA with banks that specialize in non-recourse financing through IRAs which generally requires a down payment of about 35 percent, plus reserves. The loan must be a non-recourse loan, meaning the loan can only be collateralized by the property you?re buying, within the IRA. You cannot sign a personal guarantee on the debt nor can your IRA or any other prohibited person. Fortunately, in many markets, it is still possible to generate substantial free cash flow from well-chosen rental properties, even carrying a mortgage of 2/3ds of the value of the property.

In addition to a 35 percent down payment, lenders will typically look to see if they can expect a positive cash flow of 20 to 25 percent, net of expenses. Again, this is very doable in many real estate markets today.

Looking for more flexibility? The IRA is not limited to borrowing funds from banks that specialize in non-recourse loans, your IRA can also borrow from private lenders. Borrowing from private lenders has some added advantages to it as the terms and down payment are negotiable. When entering into loans with private lenders make sure to do your due diligence, use professionals to draw up the paperwork, and remember that the loan must be non-recourse.

One caveat: Because borrowed money is not IRA money, any profits attributable to borrowed money could be subject to unrelated debt income tax (UDIT). American IRA does not provide individualized tax advice ? it?s important to retain your own tax advisor for advice on how this affects your personal situation.

Advantages of Holding Property in an IRA

IRAs allow you to defer all the income your rental property receives. This is a crucial consideration for real estate investors, because of the substantial amount of rental income, which would otherwise be taxable in the current year. If you hold the property in a Roth IRA, the income and potential capital appreciation is tax free.

Because there?s no current tax liability on rental income, you can?t take depreciation deductions on rental property you hold in the IRA. However, you aren?t paying current year taxes on the property, it?s a wash. Real estate investing in tax-advantaged accounts does not rely on depreciation allowances to make sense. You can still frequently realize positive cash flow very quickly or even immediately, even without depreciation.

Note, however, that if you have leveraged the property, you can deduct all the normal expenses, such as interest, taxes, insurance and depreciation in the percentage applicable to the percentage of debt on the property.

Other Accounts

Real estate investing in retirement accounts is not limited to IRAs. If you prefer, you can buy real estate within a self-directed Solo 401(k), SEP IRA or SIMPLE IRA as well. Many investors choose to do so because of the higher contribution allowances available in these types of accounts. For example, as of 2012, you can contribute up to $49,000 to a SEP IRA, or 25 percent of your compensation ? whichever is less.

As a point of interest, Solo 401(k) accounts are not generally subject to unrelated debt income tax. You can use leverage within the Solo 401(k) account and the account remains fully tax-deferred, though you must still pay applicable property taxes and property expenses.

Considerations

The IRS imposes a few rules on what you may and may not do with real estate within your IRA. For example, neither you, nor your parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren or your spouses or legally adopted step-children can borrow from, lend to or buy or sell goods and services from your IRA, nor may any entities they control. Note that un-adopted stepchildren are not prohibited.

You also can?t use the property for the direct benefit of any prohibited individuals. They can?t even stay overnight in a property, whether or not the property charges rent. Assets in IRAs must be solely used to grow and to generate eventual retirement income for yourself or your beneficiary, and for no other purpose. However, one great strategy commonly used by investors is to buy a retirement home now with their IRA, rent the property until they retire, and then ? after having reached age 59?, take the house as a distribution for personal use. If the account is in a Roth IRA, there won?t be any taxes due on the distribution.

Kimi Raikkonen feels cautious about Lotus updates ahead of 2012 Korean GP ? Formula 1 news

Lotus driver, Kimi Raikkonen is feeling cautious about the new updates which his team has planned to launch in the 2012 Korean Grand Prix.

The Enstone based team has planned to come up with a new Coanda-effect exhaust design in the upcoming race and the team principal, Eric Boullier is hoping to see considerable improvement in the car?s pace. However, Raikkonen believes that he cannot say anything about the team?s update package until he tests them on track during the free practice.

?You have to be [positive] don't you, otherwise you wouldn't print any of this stuff!? Raikkonen said. ?But we will see tomorrow, we know numbers from wind tunnel and calculations but until we run anything we don't really know what it's going to bring us. So hopefully it works as we expect and it will improve our position a little but we should know after practices tomorrow.?

The Finnish driver has performed tremendously well in the season until now and has impressed everyone with his incredible driving skills. At present, he is standing at third place in the drivers? championship. Furthermore, he is ahead of Lewis Hamilton and is behind his major rival, Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing.

Even though, he is quite behind the current leader in the drivers? championship, Fernando Alonso of Ferrari. Nevertheless, he is confidently looking forward to come up stronger in the remainder of the season to win the championship title.

?For me it doesn't matter if I'm second or tenth, it makes no difference,? he added. ?I'd probably rather be out of second or third place so I don't have to go to the prize giving!?

Besides, he said that they have struggled with their qualifying pace in almost all the races until now due to which they could not secure competitive positions. Nonetheless, he said that they are trying their best to improve their qualifying pace in the remaining five races of the current season so as to be able to start from higher grid slots to attain good results.

Let?s see how the 2007 world champion performs in the forthcoming race which is to be held at Korea International Circuit this weekend.

US rate on 30-year mortgage rises to 3.39 pct.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Average U.S. rates on fixed mortgages ticked up from record lows last week. Cheaper mortgages are fueling a modest housing recovery that could help the broader economy.

Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac said Thursday that the rate on the 30-year loan increased to 3.39 percent from 3.36 percent. The previous week's rate was the lowest since long-term mortgages began in the 1950s.

The average on the 15-year fixed mortgage edged up to 2.70 percent, from last week's record low of 2.69 percent.

The average rate on the 30-year fixed mortgage has been below 4 percent all year. And rates have fallen even further since the Federal Reserve started buying mortgage bonds in September to encourage more borrowing and spending.

The Fed said it will continue buying bonds until the job market shows substantial improvement. When home prices rise, people tend to feel wealthier and spend more freely. Consumer spending drives nearly 70 percent of economic activity.

Stronger housing markets helped boost economic growth at the end of the summer in nearly every region of the United States, according to a Fed survey released Wednesday. The survey follows other reports that show marked improvement in the housing market five years after the bubble burst.

Home sales are up from last year and home prices are rising more consistently in most areas. Builders are more confident and starting more homes. Lower rates have also persuaded more people to refinance. That typically leads to lower monthly mortgage payments and more spending.

Still, the housing market has a long way to full recovery. And many people are unable to take advantage of the low rates, either because they can't qualify for stricter lending rules or they lack the money to meet larger down payment requirements.

To calculate average rates, Freddie Mac surveys lenders across the country on Monday through Wednesday of each week.

The average does not include extra fees, known as points, which most borrowers must pay to get the lowest rates. One point equals 1 percent of the loan amount.

The average fee for 30-year loans was 0.7 point, up from 0.6 point last week. The fee for 15-year loans rose to 0.6 point from 0.5.

The average rate on one-year adjustable-rate mortgages increased to 2.59 percent from 2.57 percent. The fee for one-year adjustable rate loans was unchanged at 0.4 point.

The average rate on five-year adjustable-rate mortgages edged up to 2.73 percent from 2.72 percent. The fee held steady at 0.6 point.

Satiation hormone could increase risk of diabetes, heart attack and breast cancer in women

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? One of the body's satiation hormones, neurotensin, could raise women's risk of suffering one of three common and serious conditions: diabetes, cardiovascular disease and breast cancer. There is also a connection between the hormone and premature death in women, especially from cardiovascular disease.

The findings have been presented in a study from Lund University in Sweden, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

"It was surprising to find such a clear link to the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease as well as to breast cancer. Obesity is a common risk factor for all three conditions, but the connection with neurotensin is not explained by obesity or other known risk factors," says Professor Olle Melander from the Department of Clinical Sciences at Lund University, who is also a consultant at Sk?ne University Hospital.

"This is the first time a satiation hormone has been linked to these three common diseases in women. It therefore opens up a new field for continued research on risk assessment and preventive treatment," says Professor Marju Orho-Melander from the Department of Clinical Sciences at Lund University, one of the authors of the study.

It is interesting that the findings apply specifically to women. In the case of breast cancer this is obvious, but a better understanding of the development of cardiovascular disease in women is greatly needed.

The connection between neurotensin and these conditions in women was seen to be so strong that it has a clear impact on the patient's life expectancy. The strong connection also means it is appropriate to use neurotensin as a clinical risk marker for the conditions, in the view of the researchers. This provides new opportunities for early identification of women who are likely to develop cardiovascular disease, which cannot be predicted with the current known risk factors. This makes it possible to initiate preventive treatment at an early stage.

"Because the hormone circulates around the body in the blood, levels can be measured with a normal blood test, which is an advantage," explains Olle Melander.

The results were obtained through analysis of blood samples from over 4 600 people who took part in the Swedish population study Malm? Diet and Cancer. The participants gave blood samples over several years and the researchers saw a link between the level of neurotensin and the women who went on to develop one of the three diseases.

A low-fat diet reduces neurotensin production and could therefore be one way to regulate neurotensin levels, believe Olle Melander and Marju Orho-Melander. However, they point out that if neurotensin is to work as a target for treatment, a causal relationship must first be established. They hope to be able to identify this relationship through genetic studies that are currently underway.

Bankers growing more worried about student loans

By Allison Linn, TODAY

Here?s the good news: Bankers seem pretty confident that most Americans will continue to pay off most of their consumer debt on time.

Here?s the bad news: They?re not nearly as optimistic about Americans? ability to deal with ballooning student loan debt.

A new quarterly survey of U.S. banks? risk managers finds that more than six in 10 expect student loan debt delinquencies to increase in the next six months. Only about 13 percent expect delinquencies to decrease.

The survey of 215 risk managers, released Tuesday by the credit risk analysis firm FICO, shows that student loan delinquencies have been worrying bankers for most of the year. Nearly 64 percent of the bankers surveyed in the previous quarter had predicted an increase in student loan delinquencies, and about half were expecting such a rise when the survey was conducted in the first three months of the year.

The survey found that bankers were much more optimistic about Americans? ability to pay off other types of debt.

About two-thirds of the bankers surveyed said they expected delinquency rates on credit card debt to stay the same or go down in the next six months. About three-fourths were expecting delinquency rates for car loans and residential mortgages to stay flat or go down.

Despite worries about rising student loan debt, it appears Americans are continuing to borrow heavily to fund their education. On Friday, the Federal Reserve reported that consumer credit for things like car and student loans rose by nearly $14 billion in August from July. In total, U.S. consumer credit rose by more than $18 billion in August.

Financial experts have traditionally said that it?s OK to borrow some money to pay for college because the investment should pay off with higher earnings and more stable employment. In recent years, many adults also have flocked back to school in the hopes that more education would give them an edge up in a tight job market that increasingly prizes specialized skills.

But the high cost of college and easy access to student loans have left some Americans deeply burdened by debt.

According to the College Board, for students who received a bachelor's degree in the 2007-08 academic year, the median debt load was about $7,960 for public institutions, $17,040 for private, not-for-profit institutions and $31,190 for-profit institutions. The figures include students who graduated with no debt.
