Ivorian opposition figure gets 6-month jail term

ABIDJAN (Reuters) - A court in Ivory Coast sentenced the number two of former president Laurent Gbagbo's political party to six months in prison on Friday, finding him guilty of disturbing the peace following a trial his lawyers claimed was politically motivated.

A series of armed attacks on army and police installations this month has killed around 20 people, mainly soldiers, raising fears of renewed instability a year after a civil war in the world's top cocoa grower killed over 3,000 people.

President Alassane Ouattara's government blames the violence on Gbagbo's backers and has arrested a number of people including leading members of Gbagbo's FPI party.

Gbagbo is awaiting trial at the International Criminal Court charged with crimes against humanity committed during last year's war, which erupted after he refused to recognize Ouattara's victory in an election in late 2010.

Most of his leading political and military allies are either in jail in Ivory Coast or living in exile after fleeing the country at the end of the war.

Laurent Akoun, who remained in Ivory Coast and became the party's secretary-general, was arrested last week.

"The tribunal...declares Laurent Akoun guilty of the charges against him and condemns him to six months in prison and a one-year forfeiture of rights," judge Braman Kone said at the end of the five-hour trial in the commercial capital Abidjan.

The lead prosecutor had requested the maximum sentence of five years.

The charge of disturbing the peace stemmed from a speech Akoun gave to militants, excerpts of which were published in a pro-Gbagbo newspaper on August 4.

"Ouattara wanted to kill (Gbagbo)...Rise up, because our comrades could die. They are in the waiting room of death...You must rise up to continue the fight," the Notre Voie newspaper quoted Akoun as telling party members.

The first in a month-long raft of attacks occurred the day after the excerpts were published.

Akoun said during the trial that the speech included figurative political rhetoric and was not intended to result in violence.

"The trial was more political than judicial," Martial Gahoua, Akoun's lawyer, told Reuters following the judgment.

"We will discuss with our client and see if we need to appeal," he said.

The FPI has denied any involvement in the recent attacks and on Thursday accused Ouattara's government of using the recent attacks as a pretext to crackdown on the opposition.

Ivorian authorities have also arrested Alphonse Douati, the FPI's deputy secretary-general and a former minister, and charged him with threatening state security.

Former budget minister Justin Kone Katinan, one of about two dozen exiled Gbagbo allies targeted by international warrants, was arrested in Ghana last weekend. He appeared in court in Ghana's capital Accra on Friday, but the hearing was delayed until next week to allow the judge more time to review the case.

Ghanaian officials are considering whether or not to lift Katinan's status as a political refugee and extradite him to Ivory Coast.

For me it was fairly simple obtaining my cleaners operating once more. Immediately after giving them my facts and ID they informed me to entirely uninstall the software and they supplied me directions of wherever to discover the software and down load it once more pre-activated for me, and I've been very satisfied lately because I have not encountered any troubles of this kind given that that time.

One excellent software to that can support correct this is Lavasoft's Adware 2008. This software specializes in web browsing safety and can support in detecting and cleaning any spyware that might have affected your personal computer. Virus and malware are two of the biggest causes that make Windows Explorer slow to reply, so a excellent scanning really should do the trick. You are going to know that there's a problem, especially for Windows Vista users, when out of nowhere Windows Explorer would all of a sudden pop out in the screen and it normally takes a extended time for you to navigate by way of it. Not only will you be able to detect these viruses and malware quickly, it will be simple for you to get rid of them with the program's new and improved navigational interface and simple-to-comprehend controls.Below is a recommendation of a software to get which I use fairly typically. This is my individual preferred it is an antivirus computer software referred to as No Adware Antivirus. This software is like a desire it has carried out wonders for my program. It immediately notifies me when there is a problem, it finds the problem quickly and deletes it quickly no headache. With this software, I have stopped asking myself why my personal computer is running so slow. I am glad that all the spyware, adware and viruses on my personal computer are all absent now all thanks to high good quality computer software which I downloaded and would really suggest it. Hope this was helpful and excellent luck.

Massive issues start off from tiny causes. Occasionally when Windows Explorer is slow to reply, it might also be the outcome of having as well several packages and information to navigate by way of. Defragmenting your file program can resolve this as it opens up fragmented information which typically result in the system's performance falter. For these who are always on-line, there might be one or two network connections that may well have slowed the personal computer down as nicely as this typically permits other users to share information with you.

Technique Repair also hides your respectable software by removing their shortcuts from your start off menu and creating you believe that there is yet another serious problem on your device. Specific folders might search empty just because it is one a lot more trick by the creators of Technique Repair. This will make your program search like even a lot more corrupted and it will give you yet another explanation why you really should spend for that poor ware.

1- I tried using running the registry cleaner scan hoping to solve my problem that way (nothing modified). two- Following I tried using a fast scan and then a entire program scan utilizing Adware Physician (nothing arrived up as a problem). I was prepared to get in touch with expert support but imagined to myself, I have one or two a lot more issues I can try out. four- Following I tried using a fast program scan utilizing Avast free of charge edition (nothing). 5- Following I ran yet another scan utilizing Avast once more. This time I done a entire program scan of all drives and information- it took about 5 several hours to run this scan because my pc`s drives are pretty entire.

apart from this, there are other paretologic and paretologic privacy controls options you can do to correct this problem, which would indicate browsing by way of your very own file program and checking out for small troubles

Billy Graham in hospital with infection of lungs

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) ? A spokesman for Billy Graham says the 93-year-old evangelist has been admitted to a North Carolina hospital for an infection in his lungs.

A joint statement Sunday from Graham's spokesman and Mission Hospital says Graham was admitted overnight for evaluation and treatment of an infection thought to be bronchitis. The hospital is in Asheville, near his home in Montreat.

Pulmonologist David Pucci says Graham is resting comfortably and his condition is stable. He is receiving antibiotics.

Graham spokesman Larry Ross says the evangelist was able to watch a television feed of his grandson, Will Graham, preaching on Sunday morning.

Graham was hospitalized for pneumonia last November. His staff says the evangelist's health has been good since his release, though he remains at home due to age-related conditions. He is working on a manuscript for an upcoming book.

Ambrose wins again at Watkins Glen

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) ? Marcos Ambrose passed Brad Keselowski on the final lap, then held him off in a fender-banging duel to win the Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International for the second straight time.

Kyle Busch, desperate for a win to move back into contention for the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, was in control of the race but was leaking oil on the track. He skidded sideways coming out of the first turn of the final lap. Keselowski's No. 2 Dodge caromed off the side of the No. 18 Toyota and Ambrose followed Keselowski through.

"Busch slipped up big in turn one," said Keselowski, who suffered damage to the front of his car. "There was nothing he could do. We all checked up and Marcos was right on my bumper. We all just about spun out. We got to the inner loop, and again nothing but oil."

Slipping and sliding around the 11-turn, 2.45-mile layout, Ambrose and Keselowski battled side by side nearly all the way around. Both went into the grass in the inner loop at the top of the high-speed esses but kept charging.

Ambrose slipped again in turn 10, but Keselowski couldn't drive past. Neither gave ground, but Ambrose forged ahead in his Richard Petty Motorsports Ford on the final turn, another hard right-hander, and turned away Keselowski's final charge on the outside.

"I must have hit the oil one more time and he didn't," Keselowski said. "I thought I had him, but I hit more oil than Marcos did."

Entering the race, Ambrose had one win and had never finished lower than third in four starts at The Glen for an average finish of 2.3 and an average green flag speed of nearly 120 mph. Both were tops in the series.

Jimmie Johnson was third to gain the points lead by one over Greg Biffle. Sonoma winner Clint Bowyer and Sam Hornish Jr. were next, giving Dodge two in the top five. Dale Earnhardt Jr. spun late and finished 28th to fall from first to fourth in points, 17 behind Johnson.

Biffle was sixth, and Busch, Matt Kenseth, Regan Smith and Martin Truex Jr. rounded out the top 10. Ryan Newman finished 11th to move back ahead of Jeff Gordon into the second wild card slot. Kasey Kahne, who has two wins, holds the other. Gordon was also a victim of the oil, spinning late and dropping to 21st after having driven past Newman.

The top 10 drivers in the standings qualify for the 10-race Chase, and two wild cards are awarded to the drivers with the most wins outside the top 10. Only those in the top 20 are eligible for wild cards.

Last year, Ambrose beat Busch and Keselowski on a paint-trading two-lap dash to the checkered flag. Ambrose passed Keselowski for the lead on the final lap and secured his first Cup victory when a violent crash involving David Reutimann and David Ragan precipitated a caution that prevented Keselowski from making one final challenge.

Busch had the lead in that race, and he learned his lesson well. With all three up front again on a restart Sunday with 16 laps remaining in the 90-lap race, Busch dived from third to first on the inside of the 90-degree right-hander, outbraking both Ambrose and Keselowski to take the lead for the first time since lap 26.

Busch, who took the lead from pole-sitter Juan Pablo Montoya as soon as the green flag flew, kept Keselowski at bay off his back bumper, with Ambrose seven car lengths back, and pulled out to a 1-second lead as Ambrose challenged Keselowski for second. Ambrose finally got past him in the inner loop on lap 81, but he was 2.3 seconds behind and seemingly running for second until the dramatic finish.

BRYANT'S OLYMPIC FINALE

Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and the rest of the glittering American basketball team face Spain on Sunday for Olympic gold only hours before London shuts down its successful Summer Games.

"I just want to go out the right way," Bryant said. "You know, go out the right way by winning a gold medal."

When the next Summer Olympics arrive at Rio de Janeiro in 2016, Bryant will be pushing 38. Old for basketball legs, indeed. The Los Angeles Lakers' star turned 30 during his Olympic debut four years ago in Beijing while still in his basketball prime.

Bryant said he doesn't expect to play in Rio: "I'm looking forward to going and watching."

Jamaica's Yohan Blake on the 4x100 world record:

"We're not normal. To run 36 is not normal. We're flying. People call us robots. I said, no, we're from space. We drop from the sky like Mr. Bean. Because when he started he dropped out of the sky. It's just the fun stuff, you know, that we always do. I'm from Mars because I'm not normal. I'm the beast."

Usain Bolt goes afterward:

"I've told Yohan he needs to stop talking like that because people are going to put him in a straight jacket."

MO'S TWINS

Britain's Mo Farah says he had extra motivation to win the 5,000 meters on Saturday night.

He already had one gold medal from the London Olympics ? won a week ago in the 10,000 meters ? and it was imperative that he make a pair.

"These two gold medals mean the world to me, because my wife is carrying twins," Farah explained. "I didn't want to have just one gold medal, and then have twins."

BOLT'S BATON

Usain Bolt thought he'd been stymied by another one of the pesky rules at the London Games.

He asked to keep the baton from the world record 4x100 men's relay team Saturday night and was told no by an Olympics officials. The crowd booed, and Bolt walked away disgusted.

Eventually, it was returned.

"I asked and I guess somebody talked to the guy and said you need to give him that back. So I got it," Bolt said.

Bolt said its the first baton he's ever asked for, and he asked his three Jamaican teammates to sign it. They also posed for a picture he plans to frame and hang with the baton.

Bolt said the only other picture he has in his home is of the relay handoff four years ago in Beijing.

Blake said Bolt's desire to get the baton showed his teammates how special the night was to the six-time gold medalist.

"He's not sure about the next Olympics. He say he want a legacy of his own; he want to start his collection," Blake said. "That's why he wanted the baton so much, so all us can sign it and he can frame it."

"We're very satisfied with our goal. GOING OUT

How does the fastest man in the world celebrate sweeping all three of his events in a second consecutive Olympics?

Usain Bolt kept his plans close to the vest after the Jamaicans set a world record in the 4x100 relay.

"I don't know if (a party) is in the making, but I'm going out," Bolt said.

He wouldn't give up the location, either. But he said he wouldn't be out with the three Swedish handball players who helped him celebrate his win in the 100 meters.

"They are not here. They actually left the next day. Too bad, ain't it?" he smiled.

QUICKQUOTES: BOLT'S FUTURE

More from Jamaica's Usain Bolt after his team posted a world-record time of 36.84 seconds in the 4x100 relay Saturday night.

What else do you want?

"Right now nothing. I've done what I wanted to do. My coach and I will discuss what we need to. But right now I have no goals, I'm just like a bum."

Does the race make you more of a legend?

"It's just to top it off. To put a double triple, that's what it's done."

Want to try something else besides sprints?

"I definitely do, but I need to talk to my coach. He's leaning toward 400s because I've heard him mumbling. But I'm leaning away from that. I think it's going to be an intense conversations."

Why not the 400 meter?

"Have you seen the training routine for 400 meter runners? I'll (throw up) a lot more, and I don't want to do that. I like my lunch."

Talk to coach when?

"I think earlier. We've got to discuss what we're going to do before we start training, we need the right programs."

FRANCE'S SILVER

There was no disappointment for France in taking home the silver medal in women's basketball. The French knew they were up against an almost unbeatable American team, and the sting of a 36-point loss was quickly washed over by a sense of accomplishment higher than any women's team in the country's history.

Thousands of French fans serenaded them with cheers and song, waving flags and applauding a team that advanced to the final in its second Olympic appearance.

Players were equally jubilant, just happy to play in a game against a U.S. team that has won five gold medals in a row and 41 straight games.

Ryan Bailey, who ran the last leg of the relay and got the baton at same time as Bolt:

"Wow. He's a monster. He's a monster."

Justin Gatlin:

"Bolt's just a great athlete. He's pushing the boundaries for track and field. I don't fold under the pressure: I want to be right there to push not only the sport but to help (Bolt) get better."

5TH GOLD, NEVER OLD

The U.S. women's basketball team is used to celebrating gold medals. They've done it five times in a row.

But it never gets old for them. The smiles, hugs and dancing Saturday night in London made it look like the first time all over again.

For some of the Americans it is. Players Lindsay Whalen, Maya Moore, Angel McCoughtry, Tina Charles and Asjha Jones and coach Geno Auriemma all picked up their first gold medals.

OTHER DREAM TEAM

The fifth straight gold was never in doubt for the U.S. women's basketball team.

Candace Parker scored 21 points and the Americans rolled to a 86-50 victory over France on Saturday, cementing their status as Team USA's other Dream Team. With a cavalcade of stars, the American women have won 41 straight games and haven't shown even the slightest signs of vulnerability.

The French started out plucky, leading early in the second quarter. But Parker's coast-to-coast drives and a suffocating defense turned a 12-point halftime lead into a blowout midway through the third quarter.

It was the first gold medal for coach Geno Auriemma, who has led the UConn women to seven national titles.

DESTINEE DENIED

It turns out gold wasn't the Americans' Destinee after all.

Star scorer Destinee Hooker and the U.S. women's volleyball team lost to Brazil in the gold medal game on Saturday, 11-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-17.

The United States has never won gold in women's volleyball. But with Hugh McCutcheon taking over as coach after leading the men to gold in Beijing and Hooker spiking the Americans to a spotless Olympic record coming into the final, the Americans looked to have their best gold chances yet.

But Brazil won three straight sets after getting dominated in the first to repeat as Olympic champions. The upset left Americans players sobbing and Brazilians turning somersaults on the court.

PARKER'S RAZZLE-DAZZLE

Candace Parker is doing a little bit of everything to help Team USA try to grab its fifth straight women's basketball gold medal. She's been electric, overpowering.

She's scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the first half to help the Americans take control with a 37-25 lead over France at halftime.

Parker has the height of a center, the handle of a point guard and the instincts to tie it all together.

She's shown it all in the gold medal game, twice taking the ball coast-to-coast on the break, finishing one with a pretty scoop layup to get the Americans, and the crowd, rolling.

Quotes on GOP presidential ticket

"Mitt Romney is a leader with the skills, the background and the character that our country needs at a crucial time in its history. Following four years of failed leadership, the hopes of our country, which have inspired the world, are growing dim; and they need someone to revive them. Governor Romney is the man for this moment; and he and I share one commitment: we will restore the dreams and greatness of this country."

?Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., chosen Saturday as Republican Mitt Romney's running mate

___

"Paul is a man of tremendous character. Paul Ryan works in Washington, but his roots remain firmly planted in Janesville, Wis. His integrity is unquestioned, his word is good. In a city that's far too often characterized by pettiness and personal attacks, Paul Ryan is a shining exception. He doesn't demonize his opponents. He understands that honorable people can have honest differences. He appeals to the better angels of our nature. There are a lot of people in the other party who might disagree with Paul Ryan; I don't know of anyone who doesn't respect his character and judgment."

?Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney

___

"In naming Congressman Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney has chosen a leader of the House Republicans who shares his commitment to the flawed theory that new budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy, while placing greater burdens on the middle class and seniors, will somehow deliver a stronger economy. As a member of Congress, Ryan rubber-stamped the reckless Bush economic policies that exploded our deficit and crashed our economy. Now the Romney-Ryan ticket would take us back by repeating the same, catastrophic mistakes."

?Jim Messina, campaign manager for Barack Obama

___

"My friend and fellow Wisconsinite Paul Ryan will serve America admirably as the next vice president of the United States. Governor Romney and Congressman Ryan have the knowledge, expertise and vision we need to get America working again and get our fiscal house in order. This is a great day for Wisconsin and for America."

?Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus

"This is a strong pick. Governor Romney is serious about confronting the long-term challenges facing America, and Paul Ryan will help him solve the difficult issues that must be addressed for future generations."

--Former President George W. Bush

___

"Congressman Ryan has been called a serious person, but he, like Mitt Romney has seriously flawed ideas for our economy that have only failed us in the past. Congressman Ryan laid the groundwork in Congress for Mitt Romney's budget-busting scheme that gives an additional $250,000 tax cut for millionaires while punishing middle-class families with tax hikes of up to $2,000 a year. A Romney-Ryan ticket is sure to take us back and repeat the same catastrophic mistakes that got us into the mess we found ourselves in in the first place."

?Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz

___

"By picking Representative Paul Ryan, Governor Romney has doubled down on his commitment to gut Social Security and end Medicare as we know it. Romney's choice demonstrates that catering to the tea party and the far-right is more important to him that standing up for the middle class."

?Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

___

"Mitt Romney has made a great choice in Paul Ryan. He is an accomplished public servant and a leading voice on the most pressing issues facing our country. Paul is one of my best friends in Congress and someone I have worked closely with. I look forward to working closely with a Romney-Ryan administration to restore fiscal sanity and enact pro-growth policies to create jobs."

?Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, one of several prominent Republicans under consideration by Romney to be his vice presidential running mate

___

"Congressman Ryan is a respected leader and a bold thinker regarding the changes needed to restore America. His selection will also help Governor Romney win the key swing state of Wisconsin. I am excited about a Romney-Ryan ticket and look forward to doing all I can to help them win this election."

Detroit Police say they?ve arrested a suspect in the shooting of a 62-year-old Vietnam War veteran who died protecting his grandchildren during a break-in.

John Villneff's family says he died a hero Wednesday night -- and that's how they'll remember him.

Late Thursday, Detroit Police sent out an announcement that an arrest had been made. Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee credited citizen help for the arrest. Investigators were not releasing details about the suspect.

Two bullets hit the two-time Purple Heart recipient as he tried to protect his 12-year-old granddaughter, family members said. The girl ran to his house next door after four men broke into her aunt's west-side Detroit home while she was inside, relatives said.

"He jumped in front of my niece because (the robbers) were trying to kill her because she was taking pictures of them," said Melissa Villneff, John Villneff's daughter, who lives in the house that was burglarized on Rutland. Bullets hit Villneff in the heart and back, his family said, and also pierced the door and wall of his home that he shared with his son Michael Villneff, 37. The pictures his granddaughter took were turned over to police.

"He died right here in the living room," his son said. "He didn't deserve for this to happen."

Michael Villneff learned what happened when his father called as he was leaving the Tigers game Wednesday night.

"My father called me and said that he had been shot and that he was dying," he said. "I didn't get the chance to say that I loved him."

Other people were in the house when the men entered, including Melissa Villneff's 10- and 13-year-old nieces and 16-year-old nephew who is a star football player at Robichaud High School in Dearborn Heights. He was pistol-whipped and beaten with a baseball bat, relatives said. He received stitches in his head, had his jaw wired shut and was released from the hospital Thursday.

The robbers stole jewelry, a cable box, several video game consoles, a cell phone and a laptop, family members said.

The intruders were not strangers, the family said. Two of them were friends of Melissa Villneff's 18-year-old son and had been at her house in the past, relatives said.

John Villneff -- a father of three and grandfather of 12 -- served in the U.S. Marines and Navy. He was remembered as a special man who loved restoring cars.

He was born in Highland Park and moved to Arkansas as a child before returning to Michigan. He let his white beard grow long and would dress up as Santa Claus.

"He was a very good man, just a good old Southern boy, loved to help people," Melissa Villneff said. "He never bothered anybody."

John Villneff often dined at L. George's Coney Island restaurant near his home, said head waitress Anna Baxter. She said waitresses at the restaurant warned him about the neighborhood when he moved there in February. The man who lived in the home before him left because of break-ins, she said.

"It's a shame what happened to him," Baxter said.

Mars rover Curiosity ready for its driver's license

PASADENA, California | Fri Aug 10, 2012 7:36pm EDT

PASADENA, California (Reuters) - After flying more than 350 million miles (563 million km) from Earth, the Mars rover Curiosity is about to get its driver's license.

Mission control engineers in California will spend the next four days remotely installing new computer software in Curiosity that essentially reorients the brains of the six-wheeled vehicle for maneuvering around the surface of the Red Planet.

The nuclear-powered rover, about the size of a small sports car, can only store so much pre-programmed information in its computer module at once, having less on-board memory capacity than a typical cell phone.

Its previous flight-control software was tailored for the complex tasks of atmospheric entry, descent and landing that brought the mobile science lab to a historic touchdown on the floor of a vast, ancient impact basin called Gale Crater earlier this week.

A new version of the software, uploaded to Curiosity while it was still en route to Mars, is instead specially designed to let NASA engineers safely drive the rover, operate its robot arm, use its power drill, collect samples, sweep away dust and perform other functions as it goes about its science mission.

"Curiosity was born to drive. This software includes the capability for Curiosity to really go out and stretch her wheels," Benjamin Cichy, the rover's senior software and systems engineer, told reporters on Friday at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory near Los Angeles.

The new software package will be installed on Curiosity's main computer and its backup.

All other activities will be suspended for the most part during the upgrade, which was set to begin Friday night, California time, at the start of Curiosity's fifth full day on Mars. Instrument checks, picture-taking and science operations are scheduled to resume on Day 9 of the mission.

Curiosity arrived on Mars Sunday night on a quest for evidence that the planet most similar to Earth may once have harbored the basic ingredients necessary for the evolution of microbial life, or may even now be capable of supporting life.

The $2.5 billion project, formally named the Mars Science Laboratory, is NASA's first astrobiology mission since the Viking probes of the 1970s and is touted as the first full-fledged mobile biochemistry lab ever sent to a distant world.

The rover comes equipped with an array of sophisticated instruments capable of analyzing samples of soil, rocks and atmosphere on the spot and beaming results back to Earth.

The principal target of its exploration is a 3-mile- (5-kilometer) high tower of layered rock, named Mount Sharp, which is believed to have formed from sediment that once filled Gale Crater. The mound, which stands a short distance from Curiosity's landing site near the center of the crater, is seen by Mars scientists as a potential gold mine of geologic study.

An initial review of data collected from Curiosity's arrival on Mars revealed that it blasted through the planet's thin atmosphere at 24 times the speed of sound, pulling the equivalent of 11 times the force of Earth's gravity.

"If you were a human riding on board, it'd be a little bit of a rough ride, but fortunately Curiosity is made of some tough stuff," said Gavin Mendeck, who oversaw the rover's entry. It landed just 1.5 miles from the center of its projected landing zone.

The rover's chief engineer, Rob Manning, came closest to predicting the exact spot where Curiosity ended up touching down. He also oversaw some of the team's readiness testing.

"We think he might have rigged the system," descent and landing operations lead Allen Chen joked during Friday's news briefing.

Outdoor industry attempts to flex political clout

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? The outdoor recreation industry is flexing its economic muscle ? some $640 billion spent annually by Americans on gear, travel and services ? to push for wilderness protection in Utah, threatening to pull a lucrative biannual trade show if the state doesn't change course on environmental issues.

The industry showed its resolve last week by giving Utah's governor an ultimatum: give up on a threat to take over federal land in the state or risk losing the outdoor gear show that draws thousands of visitors and injects more than $40 million yearly into the state economy.

Empty threat or not, the outdoor industry and related services represent a sizeable chunk of Utah's income ? roughly $4 billion a year, or 5 percent of the state's gross product.

And it's not the first time the 4,000-member-strong Outdoor Industry Association has threatened to take its business elsewhere.

In 2003, the group threatened to pull the shows unless then-Gov. Mike Leavitt curbed an effort to seize control of dirt roads across national parks, national monuments and wilderness areas. Leavitt conceded and the shows stayed.

The group has had more cordial relationships with previous governors than with current Gov. Gary Herbert, who is a staunch supporter of mining, oil and gas development, said Tim Chambless, a political science professor at University of Utah.

The outdoor industry's latest threat has set the stage for a showdown of political will.

"There has been an ongoing tension between preservation and development," Chambless said.

Herbert is vowing to help keep the shows in Utah and work through the political differences.

But he complained his position on public lands has been misconstrued, noting the state wouldn't touch Utah's five national parks, several of its national monuments and 33 wilderness areas.

"I think they want to stay here," Herbert said. "And I want them to stay here."

At issue is legislation signed by Herbert in March that demands the federal government relinquish control of public lands in Utah by 2014, which sets up a potential legal battle over millions of acres in the state. The governor has been warned by his own attorneys that the push will likely be found unconstitutional.

Organizers of the Outdoor Retailer show, which wrapped up its summer expo Sunday, say if Herbert doesn't change course, they're looking at moving to Denver or Las Vegas, though none of those locations have the outdoor amenities that Salt Lake City has as the group seeks space to expand.

"We are in discussions with them. It's a piece of business we're certainly interested in," Visit Denver spokesman Richard Grant said.

Las Vegas also is eager to lure the show to town.

"We are always happy to meet with groups that are considering moving their event," said Jeremy Handel, a spokesman for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

Regardless of enticements, organizers concede Denver just can't provide enough convention space in one location. Las Vegas has plenty of room, but delegates say it lacks outdoor amenities found in Salt Lake City, like close proximity to several world-renowned ski areas and wilderness.

"I think we're staying or going to Vegas. Denver would be another good option if they expand their convention center ? they're essentially the same size as Salt Lake," said Kenji Haroutunian, the Nielsen Expositions executive in charge of the shows, where manufacturers take orders from retailers around the world. "We need to be making this decision by the end of this year."

The summer and winter trade shows, which have been in Utah since 1996, can make or break some Salt Lake City businesses.

"For me, this is 20 times more business," said Pam O'Mara, who runs a coffee shop near the Salt Palace Convention Center where the events are held. "It's amazing when they're here."

Next door at Caffe Molise, owner Fred Moesinger says the trade shows add 10 percent to its annual revenue.

"It's a big chunk of our year. It would be a huge loss if they decide to go elsewhere," he said.

While Frank Hugelmeyer, the outdoor association's president and CEO, won't say how serious the group is about leaving, he insists Utah is failing to recognize the economic impacts of protecting public lands for recreation.

"They're stuck in the Eisenhower era," Hugelmeyer said.

Herbert and some Republican leaders contend the state can better manage federal lands in Utah, which amount to some 28 million acres or about 50 percent of the state. Opponents, however, say the move is not only unconstitutional but bad public policy. If implemented, they say, it could eliminate important protections for wildlife refuges, forests and other sensitive areas.

While the Utah law exempts national parks, military installations, Native American reservations and congressionally approved wilderness areas, it would lay claim to the 1.9-million-acre Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, which President Bill Clinton designated in 1996. Since then, state officials and residents of the rural area, which is dominated by red rock landscapes, have waged an endless battle with federal authorities over land use.

Outdoor recreation "is such a big business, and they haven't recognized the change," Hugelmeyer said of Utah's land policies. "The governor talks about balance. He's got a clear energy vision ? what's his vision for outdoor recreation? His energy platform is expanding into recreation areas."

Serbia Arrests Agrobanka's Top Managers :: Balkan Insight

Serbia's Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime announced on Wednesday evening that eight top officials of Agrobanka and two private companies suspected of wrongdoings had been arrested in a joint action by the Serbian Interior Ministry and the Prosecutor's Office.

"So far the investigation has shown that Agrobanka had granted a large number of loans to mutually networked legal entities and without appropriate guarantees, which is contrary to the Law on Banks, the regulations of the National Bank of Serbia and the bank's own acts," reads a statement from the Prosecutor?s Office.

"Because of that, the bank was unable to collect loan repayments exceeding 200 million euro," Miljko Radisavljevic, Serbia's prosecutor for organized crime, said.

Radisavljevic refused to disclose the suspects' identity, saying that the case was in an early phase.

However, the local media reported that Dusan Antonic, the bank's former chairman, was among them.

Earlier reports suggested that he was a person of interest in the investigation into suspected wrongdoings that led to Agrobanka's downfall.

He was supposed to be questioned by the police on Wednesday morning but he allegedly attempted to flee the country.

According to the Serbian national broadcaster B92, Antonic was arrested at the Sremska Raca border crossing between Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina at around 10pm on Wednesday.

The new government has pledged to get to the bottom of the Agrobanka affair.

The bank's license to operate was revoked after it was discovered that it had accumulated debt in the amount of 300 million euros - mostly by granting loans to companies that did not provide adequate guarantees. The loans were subsequently never repaid.

Business Education: Cheap Auto Insurance for Antique Cars

Trying to get cheap auto insurance for antique cars can be tricky. In fact, it can be a bit frustrating too because more often than not, cheap auto insurance for antique and highly valued cars usually do not exist unless of course you can get a discount from specialist insurers.

Getting collectibles insurance may be a fine idea if you really want to give your antique car good protection because even if you see a valuable collection, a traditional car insurance provider will only see it as a risky and therefore expensive deal. Most people who are into collecting old cars do not pay attention to insurance though according to experts and what they usually do is they just call their insurance agent and just add their antique car in their policy.

If you recently acquired an antique car or a relative or close friend left you one, it is possible that you do not know that policies for such cars exist. Experts say though that insuring an antique with a traditional insurer is a big mistake because for one, a traditional policy presupposes that a vehicle?s value will decrease over time. An antique car?s value however is likely to increase or appreciate. There are a number of cheap policies from specialized insurance companies that offer good coverage. One has to note though that you should know how much the replacement value is and that your agent should agree with you when it comes to this so that your pristine antique car?s value will not depreciate at least according to its policy. Getting a standard policy will not only be expensive but it will also be quite a headache because it will not give you the coverage that you need.

But how does one get a cheap policy for such an expensive car? Many people would think that this is rather counterintuitive but the reasoning here is simple. Most classic or antique cars are pampered. They are also driven in a careful manner and rather infrequently so this spells cheap auto insurance for the owner.

Raspberry Pi teases finished Gertboard IO extender, revs creative engines

The Raspberry Pi faithful have been looking forward to the Gertboard almost as much as the main device itself: Gert van Loo's I/O extender promises to flash lights, spin motors and otherwise take on the tasks that the Raspberry Pi doesn't directly manage on its own. While we've seen work on the project since late 2011, the expansion now looks to be closer to reality following a fresh teaser. The refined design's biggest tweak is replacing its original PIC controller with an Arduino-powered chip -- an element no doubt familiar to the crowd that would already be looking at a very hackable, miniature Linux computer. Most everything else is a refinement, although Gert has brought in three physical buttons and two-channel analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters. We'll learn the full story later this week, and until then we'll be dreaming of all the off-kilter Arduino projects that might be made better with a little Raspberry Pi companionship.

Update: The wait turned out to be short, and interested parties ready to do some soldering of their own can pre-order the Gertboard for £30 at element14 now. Check the Raspberry Pi blog (2) for more info, or check out a video interview with Mr. van Loo himself embedded after the break.

Sirtuins help fight off disorders linked to obesity, new MIT study shows

CAMBRIDGE, MA. -- A protein that slows aging in mice and other animals also protects against the ravages of a high-fat diet, including diabetes, according to a new MIT study.

MIT biology professor Leonard Guarente discovered SIRT1's longevity-boosting properties more than a decade ago and has since explored its role in many different body tissues. In his latest study, appearing in the Aug. 8 print edition of the journal Cell Metabolism, he looked at what happens when the SIRT1 protein is missing from adipose cells, which make up body fat.

When put on a high-fat diet, mice lacking the protein started to develop metabolic disorders, such as diabetes, much sooner than normal mice given a high-fat diet.

"We see them as being poised for metabolic dysfunction," says Guarente, the Novartis Professor of Biology at MIT. "You've removed one of the safeguards against metabolic decline, so if you now give them the trigger of a high-fat diet, they're much more sensitive than the normal mouse."

The finding raises the possibility that drugs that enhance SIRT1 activity may help protect against obesity-linked diseases.

Guarente first discovered the effects of SIRT1 and other sirtuin proteins while studying yeast in the 1990s. Since then, these proteins have been shown to coordinate a variety of hormonal networks, regulatory proteins and other genes, helping to keep cells alive and healthy.

In recent years, Guarente and his colleagues have deleted the gene from organs such as brain and liver to pinpoint its effects more precisely. Their previous work has revealed that in the brain, SIRT1 protects against the neurodegeneration seen in Alzheimer's, Huntington's and Parkinson's diseases.

SIRT1 is a protein that removes acetyl groups from other proteins, modifying their activity. The possible targets of this deacetylation are numerous, which is likely what gives SIRT1 its broad range of protective powers, Guarente says.

In the Cell Metabolism study, the researchers analyzed the hundreds of genes that were turned on in mice lacking SIRT1 but fed a normal diet, and found that they were almost identical to those turned on in normal mice fed a high-fat diet.

This suggests that in normal mice, development of metabolic disorders is a two-step process. "The first step is inactivation of SIRT1 by the high-fat diet, and the second step is all the bad things that follow that," Guarente says.

The researchers investigated how this occurs and found that in normal mice given a high-fat diet, the SIRT1 protein is cleaved by an enzyme called caspase-1, which is induced by inflammation. It's already known that high-fat diets can provoke inflammation, though it's unclear exactly how that happens, Guarente says. "What our study says is that once you induce the inflammatory response, the consequence in the fat cells is that SIRT1 will be cleaved," he says.

The researchers also found that as normal mice aged, they were more susceptible to the effects of a high-fat diet than younger mice, suggesting that they lose the protective effects of SIRT1 as they age. Aging is known to increase inflammation, so Guarente is now studying whether that age-related inflammation also provokes SIRT1 loss.
