Why Monster Hunter Is So Popular In Japan (And Struggles Everywhere Else)

Why Monster Hunter Is So Popular In Japan (And Struggles Everywhere Else)The Monster Hunter series wasn't always the "monster" (heh heh) hit it is currently. Originally released for the PS2, the first game, Monster Hunter, and its sequel, Monster Hunter G, sold less than a million copies each. It wasn't until the game went hand-held to the PSP with Monster Hunter Portable (Monster Hunter Freedom in the west) that Capcom scored their first million seller with the series.

There is, however, something to be said about the fact that the game series helped cement the PSP's popularity in Japan among the previous generation of handhelds (so much so that the PSP continues to outsell the PS Vita) as well as establish the popularity of the 3DS in the current generation of handhelds in Japan. Why does the series garner such popularity mainly in Japan?

The game's system itself is not unique. It largely echoes the Phantasy Star Online quest/mission model. Still, with Capcom's action game and graphics knowhow mixed with a more relatable semi-realistic game world (i.e. all players are human, no level system, heavy emphasis on action, all attacks are physical with no real magic other than buffs in the form of potions or meat? (Although, show me a real life video of a man whirling around a ship anchor to fight a sperm whale and I might concede that Monster Hunter is "realistic.")), and a Skinner-box reward system, you've got yourself a well-put-together game. Add a dash of cute cat-like mascot and you've got a winner. Capcom was also able to make the game more accessible to players by having the multi-player be, for the most part, free (The original games for the PS2 required a monthly ?900 (US$10.19) service provider subscription and the Wii versions require the purchase of 30 day, 60 day, or 90 day tickets? Another argument for why the portable versions are more popular).

Another, and perhaps the biggest factor in the strength of the Monster Hunter series, is Japan's sense of community. Due to the nature of the game's multi-player system, particularly with the PSP and 3DS, when playing with others, you will almost invariably be playing with someone you know?more often than not, a friend. Most people seem to get their introduction to the game from the people around them. "My boss talked me into playing [Monster Hunter 3rd]" says Ryouhei, a 24 year-old clerk who would spend hours after work huddled together with his co-workers. "It's fun to work together with friends towards a mutual goal."

Why Monster Hunter Is So Popular In Japan (And Struggles Everywhere Else)The fact that friends are playing the game acts as an incentive for people to join in as well as keep playing. In Japan, a country with imperial origins, there is often enormous pressure to fit in in communities. When something is popular among one's peers, it's best to get in on the action, or at the very least know what all the hubbub is about. While this mindset has lessened in the years of democratic rule, it remains embedded in a large part of society. "On a trip with 15 or so colleagues, everyone but me was playing Monster Hunter on their PSPs." Kenji, a 25 year-old actor recalls, "I sat in the corner playing Final Fantasy on my PSP, while everybody else sat in circles of 3 or 4 laughing and having fun? It was terrible. When I got home, the first thing I did was get a copy of the game."

Monster Hunter is pretty much tailor-made for hand-held consoles. This could be part of the reason why it has not caught on as strongly outside of Japan. Portable systems are much stronger sellers in Japan than in other regions. This could be attributed to several factors; the dense population leading to the development of smaller consoles with equal, if not higher performance levels than older, larger versions, and the abundance of mass transit, leaving large portions of the population with very little to do during the long train/bus rides to and from school/work.

Another part of why the game is more popular in Japan probably has once again to do with the sociological aspects of the game's multi-player. In Japan, playing multi-player Monster Hunter is a form of social interaction. You're not playing to get better equipment, you're playing to have fun and to socialize with the people you're playing with. I asked several people about their experiences with Monster Hunter while preparing to write this article, and a couple of interesting points crept up. Firstly, I could not find a single person who started the series on their own. Everyone seemed to have been introduced to the game series through someone else, be it a colleague or friend's suggestion, or simple peer pressure from watching friends enjoying the game. While I'm sure there are people who picked up the game on their own, they seem to be quite rare. The second point of interest was when I asked people what they enjoyed about the game. No matter what reason was given, invariably, the words, "-with my friends/colleagues" came at the end. Everyone had their varying basic reasons for liking the games, but the crux of their enjoyment came from playing with someone else.

Why Monster Hunter Is So Popular In Japan (And Struggles Everywhere Else)Now, there are many games out there that are basically multi-player games with brief single-player campaigns tacked on, but Monster Hunter is a true chameleon in this respect: the game doesn't sell itself as a multi-player game. Looking over the promotional videos for most of the games in the series, very little screen time is ever devoted to the multi-player. Ratio-wise I'd say less than 10% of the imagery shows more than one player in action at the same time. From a distance, most of the game series' promotional material seems to almost downplay the multi-player. Even the cover of the games all show a lone hunter standing up against a giant monster that towers over them (The only game that goes counter to this formula is the online game Monster Hunter Frontier Online). Focus on graphics and single-player for a game that is crippled without its multi-player? I don't know if it's on purpose, but it seems counter-intuitively genius.

With Monster Hunter, the goal is multi-player.

While most non-competitive multi-player games have multi-player as a means to achieve a mutual goal, with Monster Hunter the goal IS multi-player, cloaked in the superficial objective of fighting giant monsters to hopefully get ingredients for better equipment. Monster Hunter is a truly "social" game (or rather, a "social interaction" game) in the guise of an action game. Playing alone, the game feels aimless. Sure, the gameplay is well-designed and solid, but without someone to share it with, the experience feels hollow. This is why the game's single-player is so weak, and this was the reason why I initially stopped playing the game shortly after first picking it up with no one to play with (I started back up when I found a group of friends to play with). This is also pretty much why the game struggles outside of Japan. Like it or not, gaming is still largely viewed as a solitary pastime with interactions between people only occurring over the internet (You won't find groups of friends sitting around a table in a restaurant or fast food joint playing hand-held video games together in many other countries outside of Japan). This, and the fact that most of the Monster Hunter games for hand-held consoles released outside of Japan have been for the PSP, a console that gets half of its sales numbers from Japan alone, is a formula for trouble. The upcoming western release of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate for the 3DS in March could hopefully change that, however (Although the need for the Circle Pad Pro to fully exploit the game's potential worries me).

US economy contracts for the first time in 3-1/2 years

1 day

The U.S. economy stopped dead in its tracks in the last three months of the year, according to the latest government data, as the halting recovery was slammed by Superstorm Sandy and fiscal cliff political gridlock.

But economists said the surprise 0.1 percent contraction in the fourth quarter's annual growth rate was likely a brief pause in an otherwise halting, four-year recovery from the 2007 recession.

??This isn't the start of a new recession,? said Paul Ashworth chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics.

The Commerce Department's report on fourth quarter gross domestic product, the first of several that are typically revised as more data becomes available, followed a stronger-than-expected 3.1 bounce in growth during the preceding three months.Forecasters had been expecting a weak performance of about 1.1 percent growth in the final quarter of 2012 after Sandy shuttered millions of businesses and factories in early November.?

Besides the storm, the weakness appeared to be the result of other one-time factors, including the biggest defense spending cuts in 40 years and a slow build in company stockpiles. Those two factors alone slashed 2.6 percentage points from growth.

The big contraction in defense spending, which reversed an upswing in the third quarter, came as Congress remained deadlocked over compromise needed to avert across-the-board spending cuts known as the sequester. The ??fiscal cliff? compromise reached at the end of the year?postponed those cuts until March 1.?

A top Defense Dept. official said last week that the Pentagon already is eliminating all 46,000 of its temporary civilian workers in anticipation of budget cuts. Deputy Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said that if Congress fails to head off mandatory budget cuts by March 1, some 800,000 Pentagon civilian employees will face furloughs and reduced paychecks by April, cutting spending by about $5 billion.?

The other big drag on third quarter growth, the draw-down in business inventories, followed a backup in merchandise in late summer after a slowdown in China and Europe left many U.S. manufacturers with unsold goods. As businesses sold off their backlogs by year-end, the sharp drop in inventories lopped off?1.3 percentage points in GDP growth.

Heavy equipment maker Caterpillar, Inc. said this week that it reduced its inventories by $2 billion in the fourth quarter as global sales declined from a year earlier.?

The?draw-down?means manufacturers are well-positioned for a pick-up in demand this year, according to Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moodys Analytics.?

?That augurs very well going into the first quarter,? he said. ?You can feel things started to pick up again."

That pickup has been reflected in fresher data on the economy?s performance in December, including upbeat reports on home and car sales, business investment and manufacturing orders.??Those reports have raised hopes that the ongoing move to balance the federal budget with tax increases and spending cuts won?t dampen the emerging recovery.

Signs?of?strength
Ironically, the gloomy headline on Wednesday?s GDP report masked two additional signs of economic strength.?

Businesses and consumers were big spenders in the fourth quarter - despite worries that the ongoing budget gridlock had prompted both to sit on the sidelines until the standoff was resolved.??Consumer spending ? which accounts for roughly 70 percent of GDP ? was also up sharply, adding 1.5 percent to GDP.?The recovering housing market added 3-tenths of a percent to growth.

Business investment in new equipment and software jumped 12.4 percent from the preceding three months, adding 9-tenths of a?percent to the economy?s overall expansion rate.?

?The collapse in government spending and cautious inventory controls hide the simple fact that households are spending, businesses are investing and the housing market is expanding,? said Joel Naroff, chief economist at Naroff Economic Advisors.

The strength in consumer and business spending helps support the idea that the economy?s long-term trend of a fairly tepid 2 percent growth rate remains intact. The initial tally for all of 2012 showed the economy grew by 2.2 percent, a bit better than 2011's growth of 1.8 percent.

?The reality is that the economy is growing between 2 to 2.5 percent,? said Zandi. ?That?s how fast it?s been growing since the recovery started two-and-a-half years ago.?

That growth pace is slower than typical recoveries in the last half century, which is why the unemployment remains stuck at painfully high levels. The economy has created roughly 150,000 jobs a month, on average, for the past two years, barely enough to keep up with population growth. As a result, the unemployment rate has been falling slowly and has remained stuck at 7.8 percent for the past two months.

Economists expect the government?s January jobs report Friday to show the unemployment rate remained at that level again this month.?That tepid pace of growth and hiring is expected to continue into this year, due in part to the year-end budget deal that ended a two-year Social Security ?tax holiday.??

The increase will cost wage earners about two percent of their take-home pay (until they reach this year?s $113,700 income limit.)?That means a household earning the median $50,000 a year will have about $1,000 less to spend. A household with two highly-paid workers will have up to $4,500 less. ?

A key measure of consumer confidence plummeted this month after Americans noticed the reduction in their paychecks, the Conference Board reported Tuesday.

With growth historically weak and unemployment high, the Federal Reserve has promised to keep interest rates near zero, despite the potential long-term risk of inflation. Central bank Chairman Ben Bernanke has answered critics by saying that the Fed is ready to begin raising rates if price increases begin creeping back into the economy.

Though prices are rising in the housing and stock markets, there is little sign of inflation at the consumer or producer price level. Wage growth has also been flat since the recovery began.?

Still, the risk remains that the Fed?s ?exit strategy," whenever it comes, will put another damper on the economy.?

?I?m afraid that house prices could get to depend on the extremely low mortgage rates which will turn around when the Fed stops its (low interest rate) policy,? said Harvard economist Martin Feldstein, who served as chief economic advisor to President Reagan. ?At some point the Fed is going to have to start raising long term interest rates.?

Grateful Letter to Mitch from College Student ? Sight & Sound Insights

Hello Mitch;

I am pleased to have found out my mother has contacted you, she is always
looking to help me any way she can. This all begin from me asking her the
other day if she could clip some coupons for me (because she is the coupon
queen) for hearing aid batteries so I can try and save some money when it
comes to buying new ones. I currently am a student at SUNY Cortland
attending my last semester on campus doing a full time unpaid internship. My
internship runs Monday through Friday 8:30am-4:30 pm along with after hour
campus activities that we have to attend. My job involves working in the
health promotion office for the university planning, organizing, attending,
and educating different health related functions for the students on campus. An
example of this would be our upcoming body application week. I am very
lucky to have landed this internship because I am doing what I love, helping
people and educating a healthy life style.
Along with working my internship I also work at the campus fitness center
usually 6am-8am then 5pm-7pm. I currently live on my own making my financial
situation tight so saving every penny helps.

Words cannot describe how grateful I am to have your help with donating
hearing aid batteries to me. I cannot thank you enough and your help well
never be forgotten.

I have been attending college for 6 years receiving my associate?s degree in
liberal arts, and I will be receiving my bachelor?s degree in community
health with a concentration in wellness and promotion this May. College has
been a struggle for me, having 14 surgeries for my ears in high school due
to cholesteatoma is a battle that I will never forget. My hearing
impairment kind of left me as an outcast, I never heard whispers, was not
allowed to play sports, and could barely hear teachers. I felt alone in my
own quite world. I always remember calling my mother in the high school
bathroom crying asking her to come pick me up because I could not hear.
After 14 surgeries I have found myself cholesteatoma free for about 5 years.
The battle I struggle with now is maintaining my hearing. Recently, over the
summer by hearing loss became pretty bad and the discussion of a hearing aid
was once in my life again. I remember the first time speaking to a hearing
aid specialist back in high school, she asked what ones I wanted to try on
and I said that I did not want to try any of them on. Nervous scared anxious
I made an appointment.

My main fear came from how I was going to look, like you said in your video
I will now be different on the outside but the same on the inside. This was
a hard reality for me because during that time I was preparing for my 2nd &
3rd body bodybuilding bikini competition. These competitions involve a
tremendous amount of self-discipline, dedication, and hard work. My biggest
fear then became my appearance on stage. I feared working my hardest and
loosing because I had an ugly device strapped to my ear.

With all my worries in mind I made an appointment and tried on a hearing aid
for the first time. Again, words can?t describe the feeling I had for the
first time I COULD HEAR. I heard the receptionist in the other room, my
little brother sliding his foot, my own voice, and my mother so clearly; I
had never felt so much joy in my life. So the decision was made and I was to
be receiving my very first hearing aid.

On a side note: I would just like to add that the fact that hearing aids are
not covered under insurance blows my mind. Working and learning the health
care field I know how many individuals need assistance that has very little
covered under insurance. Which makes me respect you and what you do so much
more knowing you are literally giving the people the ability to hear again.

Back to my story, at first I was shy with my hearing aid I did not want anyone to know but I slowly became more comfortable with it. When it came to my
competition time I was nervous as ever, afraid I was going to lose because
my hearing aid would make me less beautiful as everyone else. So I took a
risk and competed using my hearing aid, on stage in front of about one
hundred people I threw my fears out the window. That competition I placed
4th. Still motivated I competed the next weekend even informing some of the
staff that I was hearing impaired and to please assist me by making sure I
know when it is my turn to enter the stage. That competition I was more
confident and I feel the judges knew it. I finally placed 1st winning my
NABBA Pro Bikini Competitor Card. I also placed first in the couples
division with my boyfriend.

I feel like I faced my biggest fear and beat it. Now I am no longer ashamed
of my hearing aid because it has changed my life so much. My whole experience
with a hearing disability has made me who I am today. I am more
understanding of others with disabilities and I try to make everyone I meet
smile. Even though I no longer wish to compete as a bikini competitor I
still enjoy working out and lifting weights and will be competing in the
school weight lifting meet this semester.

Some days it?s a struggle and in the past I used to wonder ?why me? but I
understand now I have been given this gift because I am strong enough to
handle it. I am given this gift to help others to help make the world a
better place one person at a time. I would not change the life that was
given to me for a million dollars because this struggle has shown me that
my disability does not own me I own my disability.

Thank you so much again for your help! Also, thank you for sharing your
struggles, videos and creating this foundation. This foundation that you
have created has now personally touched my life and the lives of many others
you are truly a great man. Thank you

Jessica Dashnaw

FILE - In this Friday, Jan. 18, 2013 file photo, an All Nippon Airways' Boeing 787 "the Dreamliner" parks on the tarmac as a Japan Airlines' Boeing 767 airplane takes off at Haneda Airport in Tokyo. ANA and JAL said they replaced lithium-ion batteries in their Boeing 787 Dreamliners on multiple occasions before a battery overheating incident led to the worldwide grounding of the jets. ANA said Wednesday, Jan. 30, it replaced batteries on its 787 aircraft some 10 times because they failed to charge properly or showed other problems, and informed Boeing about the swaps. JAL said it had also replaced lithium-ion batteries on its 787 jets but couldn't immediately give details. (AP Photo/Koji Sasahara, File)

TOKYO (AP) ? U.S. regulators said Wednesday they asked Boeing Co. to provide a full operating history of lithium-ion batteries used in its grounded 787 Dreamliners after Japan's All Nippon Airways revealed it had repeatedly replaced the batteries even before overheating problems surfaced.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter Knudson said the agency made the request after recently becoming aware of battery problems at ANA that occurred before a Jan. 7 battery fire in a 787 parked at Boston's Logan International Airport. Boeing has already collected some of the information, he said.

ANA said it had replaced batteries on its 787 aircraft some 10 times because they didn't charge properly or connections with electrical systems failed, and informed Boeing about the swaps. Japan Airlines also said it had replaced 787 batteries. It described the number involved as a few but couldn't immediately give further details.

All 50 of the Boeing 787s in use around the world remain grounded after an ANA flight on Jan. 16 made an emergency landing in Japan when its main battery overheated.

The 787 is the first airliner to make wide use of lithium-ion batteries. They are prone to overheating and require additional safeguards to prevent fires. However, ANA spokeswoman Megumi Tezuka said the airline was not required to report the battery replacements to Japan's Transport Ministry because they did not interfere with flights and did not raise safety concerns.

Having to replace batteries on aircraft is not uncommon and was not considered out of the ordinary, she said.

Laura Brown, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, said in Washington that the agency was checking whether the previous battery incidents had been reported by Boeing.

Boeing in Japan said it couldn't comment while the NSTB investigation is underway. GS Yuasa, the Kyoto, Japan-based manufacturer of the batteries, said it could not comment.

With 17 of the jets, ANA was Boeing's launch customer for the technologically advanced airliner. The airline has had to cancel hundreds of flights, affecting tens of thousands of people, but has sought to minimize disruptions by switching to other aircraft as much as possible. ANA and Japan Airlines are among the biggest customers for the 787 and Japanese manufacturers make about 35 percent of the aircraft.

The battery problems experienced by ANA before the emergency landing were first reported by The New York Times.

Japanese and U.S. investigators looking into the Boeing 787's battery problems shifted their attention this week from GS Yuasa to the manufacturer of a monitoring system. That company, Kanto Aircraft Instrument Co., makes a system that monitors voltage, charging and temperature of the lithium-ion batteries.

On Tuesday, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said it was conducting a chemical analysis of internal short circuiting and thermal damage of the battery that caught fire in Boston.

The probe is also analyzing data from flight data recorders on the aircraft, the NTSB said in a statement on its website.

Children's magazine promotes adult video games

LONDON (Reuters) - A British magazine distributed by a joint venture of Conde Nast and Hearst Corporation and aimed at primary school children has been featuring images of adult-rated video games.

The most recent issue of Cool Kidz, which is published by privately-owned LCD Publishing, contained images of five games that carried age ratings of 18 years, under the European gaming industry's PEGI rating scheme.

Screenshots appeared as double-page spreads, for use as posters, and were reproduced in spot-the-difference and other puzzles. Earlier issues also had images from 18- and 16-rated games.

Children's campaigners said the images reflected a growing problem of young children being exposed to violent video games, thereby increasing the chance they start playing them earlier.

It also highlighted what some critics describe as an apparent gap in regulation of children's magazines since LCD does not appear to have broken any law or industry rule.

LCD Publishing, which is based in Exeter, southwest England, said it took its responsibilities to young readers seriously.

"We censor the images we use to ensure that there is no blood or apparent body damage," owner Allen Trump said in an emailed statement.

He said the images used were suitable for children 12 or older, although he added the magazine was targeted at children up to 12 years.

The pictures printed depicted life-like computer generated images of men carrying weapons including assault rifles, Bowie knives, an axe, an anti-tank weapon and pistols.

The images showed explosions but not the visceral, bloody combat or scenes of a sexual nature for which the games are frequently criticized by parents' groups and women's rights advocates.

Cool Kidz is distributed by Comag, which is controlled by privately-owned U.S. magazine publishers Conde Nast, owners of Vogue magazine, and the Hearst Corporation, owner of Cosmopolitan magazine.

All three groups declined repeated requests for comment.

London-based Comag is one of the largest magazine distributors in the UK with annual turnover of around 230 million pounds ($360 million), according to its most recent accounts.

FREE PROMOTION

Trump said LCD downloaded the game images from the Internet although he was also occasionally approached by public relations firms seeking coverage of their clients' games.

Games publishers regularly post images on their websites, for use by online and print publishers, thus helping create awareness of their game.

Games firms contacted by Reuters said they were unaware Cool Kidz, which has been published for seven years, had been using their images.

The adult games Cool Kidz featured included Hitman: Absolution, Call of Duty Black Ops II, Assassins Creed III, Farcry 3 and Dishonored.

Representatives for Japan's Square Enix, publisher of the Hitman series, privately-owned Bethesda Softworks, publisher of Dishonored, and Ubisoft Entertainment, publisher of Assassins Creed III and Farcry 3, said they opposed the use but declined to say whether they would take any legal action against LCD.

Call of Duty publisher Activision declined to comment.

Alison Sherratt, senior vice-president of teachers union ATL, said publishers and government needed to do more to limit children's' exposure to games.

"It puts peer pressure on children .. If they see these images, it gives them the idea it's ok, it's all right to play these games," she added.

A spokeswoman for the Advertising Standards Authority said games companies could not advertise 18 rated games in children's magazines and a spokesman for the Video Standards Council (VSC), the UK affiliate of PEGI, said its rules also prohibited this.

However, since the images were not paid-for advertising, or supplied to Cool Kidz by the games publishers, these rules do not apply.

The Press Complaints Commission can adjudicate on complaints against magazines but only in respect of its members. LCD is not one.

The Office of Fair Trade and the Professional Publishers Association, trade group for magazine publishers, said they were unaware of any bodies that had regulatory powers over the content of children's magazines.

Accelerating neutral atoms on a table top

Jan. 27, 2013 ? Charged particle accelerators have become crucially important to modern day life, be it in health care for cancer treatment or for answering important fundamental scientific questions like the existence of the HIGGS boson, the so called 'God particle'.

In a simple picture, charged particles like electrons and protons are accelerated between two end plates across which an electrical voltage is applied. High energies need high voltages (millions and billions of volts) and long acceleration paths in giant sized machines -- for instance the trillion volt machine called the 'large hadron collider' (LHC) which discovered the Higgs boson, circles over 27 km underground in Geneva! A new concept for a compact accelerator was discovered in the last decade using high powered, short pulses of laser light.

Alternating large electric fields of the light can be transformed in plasmas to create quasi static fields that can produce hundreds of millions volt accelerating voltages just over millimeter lengths on a table top!

How do we accelerate neutral particles -- i.e. particles that cannot be energized by electrical voltages? And do it over millimeters rather than hundreds of meters and moreover using lasers? Research at Ultra Short Pulse High Intensity Lab in TIFR has now found a novel scheme that can do precisely this. The concept uses the ability of powerful lasers to strip nearly 8 electrons per atom in a nano sized, cooled aggregate of argon atoms- a nano piece of ice. A 40,000 atom cluster of argon is charged to 320,000 by a laser that lasts only a 100 billionth of a millionth of a second. Such a super highly charged ice piece explodes soon after, accelerating the charged atoms (Ions) to a million electron volts of energy. The TIFR research now found that all the expelled electrons can be put back into the charged ion that has been accelerated so that it now reverts to being a neutral atom but at high energies. To top it all, this process is nearly 100% efficient at neutralizing the speeding ions and converting them to fast atoms.

Accelerated neutral atoms are very important for many applications. Unaffected by electric or magnetic fields, they penetrate deeper in solids than electrons/ions and thereby create high finesse microstructures for novel electronics and optical devices. Fast atoms are used both as diagnostics and heating sources in Tokomak machines like the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) in France, that are being developed to create sustained thermo-nuclear fusion. The TIFR scheme can produce a point source of fast neutral atoms close to the location of an intended application.

This certainly shows that staying neutral under extreme provocation has its advantages.

Change Your Life With These Great Self Help Tips!

This article has been viewed 3 times.

You should always be focusing on your personal development. Whether it be healthy living or developing better financial habits, self-growth is smart. You should always strive to be a better person, all throughout your life. There?s always some area of your life you can improve, so don?t be complacent. Establishing good habits will make your life more enjoyable and beneficial!

Do you frequently consume alcohol? Are you a smoker? What activities do you engage in that have negative effects on your body? Your body is sacred, and you have to learn to respect it. If you want to make enhancements to your lifestyle, eliminating bad habits is a big part of this. Look at some of the habits you have and evaluate if there is anything you can change for the better.

It is important to treat your body well and listen to its signals. Get regular exercise and eat a healthy diet. If you feel sick, see your doctor to find out what the problem is so it can be corrected. Listen to what your body has to say. Start to listen to what your body is telling you, and act on what you?re hearing. You?ll become better attuned, and the result will be better overall self improvement. Ignoring those needs may cause your body to ignore you.

Willpower often plays a major role in increasing the good aspects in your life; your wishes for others may also be what befalls you. Try to only want good things to happen to other people. When you look on the bright side, it is harder for negative emotions and unfortunate events to ruin your mood.

TIP! Instead of bragging abut your achievements and awards, ask other people about what they have accomplished that they are most proud of. This will enable you to learn about others and to develop a great deal of respect for the people around you.

Put your core principles into practice. Everyone has basic principles by which they define themselves. Sticking to your core values will help your self esteem, if you?ve got a strong foundation to rely on. This will also help you develop consistency.

Place value on the best when it comes to self improvement. You should always strive to do your best in all aspects of your life.

In terms of self improvement, the experience of failure may feel disheartening and decrease self esteem. Remember, that even failure is something you can use to improve yourself. You will now know how to deal with the situation and what your weaknesses are. Looking at it this way, failure is a source of pride, because you?ve unlocked another piece of the puzzle when it comes to your development.

Exercise can benefit almost anyone, even those who are not trying to shed excess weight. There are a variety of great reasons to exercise. Exercising causes the release of endorphins that make you feel happier and less irritable.

TIP! Begin your personal development program by focusing on the things that are most important to you. Not only will you find information on being successful, but you will also learn about mistakes that others have already made and be able to avoid them.

Aim to make each day better than its predecessor. Always work towards making improvements. Try your hardest to achieve something different today than what you achieved yesterday.

Determine which aspects of your life you truly value, and concentrate solely on those. By concentrating on those things that you cherish and appreciate, you?re less likely to be pessimistic and to brood over adverse situations that are of little consequence.

Go with a friend to see a movie you enjoy. This gets you out into a social setting, but does not require you to socialize to the point where you are uncomfortable. This will help get you used to being in the same vicinity with lots of different people.

Seeing a counselor or therapist can be beneficial. They have a great deal of experience in dealing with personal thoughts and are even licensed to do so. Professionals will be able to help you consider all your options and give you more information about available resources. Talking these issues through with someone who is a professional will help you be healthier and happier in the long term.

TIP! When you find yourself feeling extremely angry, before you say anything, slowly count to the number ten. Breathe deeply and transport yourself to a tranquil place.

It may become discouraging to begin developing better personal habits and lifestyles, but once you start noticing your life developing towards a better future, you will never want to stop. You can always develop better ways to do things and it?s important to always try hard towards any self improvement goals you have.

French flags selling out in Mali's capital

France's military intervention has been widely greeted here. Normally, Malian attitudes towards its former colonial ruler range from resentment to admiration.

    By Peter Tinti,?Correspondent / January 18, 2013

Yacouba Konate wears a French flag to show his support for the French military intervention in Mali in the Malian capital of Bamako last Sunday. After France launched a bombing campaign against Islamist rebels in central and northern Mali last week, French flags bloomed around Bamako almost instantaneously.

    Joe Penney/Reuters

War and nationalist sentiment usually go hand in hand. The week-old war in Mali is no exception. As?the war drums beat hotter in this landlocked former French colony in West Africa, nationalism is also on the rise.?

But in this case, it is French nationalism that is rising.

Normally, Malian attitudes towards France, which once ruled the country as a colony, range from resentment to admiration. But when France launched a bombing campaign against Islamist rebels in central and northern Mali last week, French flags bloomed around the capital Bamako almost instantaneously.?

Flags are waved on the street, show up on cars, motorcycles, appear in windows. Vive la France!

What might be called a panoply of pro-France merchandise is found everywhere, offering insight both into a quick shift in Malian attitudes toward France, and into the workings of Bamako?s street markets. ?

Moreover, the flags, like so much merchandise around the world, do not come from France ? but are made, shipped, stocked and marketed through the larger Chinese vendors in Bamako.

Information about the new commodity of French flags begins downtown at the ?Place d?Ind?pendance.? At this square, teenage boys work in groups to sell the French tricolor in the shadow of a monument to honor Mali?s independence from colonial rule. No one seems to notice the irony.

One young man, Cheickounah Kon?, usually sells toys, battery-powered fly swatters, and odds and ends for about $5 a day, mostly to drivers stuck in traffic.

But two days after French jets began operations, a demand for flags made him change his product. He sells small flags on a staff with a suction cup on the end, that now adorn motor-scooters. Taxi drivers buy full-sized French flags and cover their rear windows with them.

For the last few days Mr. Kone has picked up some $25 a day in patriotic war spoils.

?Vive la France!? says one smiling customer who forks over $2 for the French colors.

Kone?s flag stash comes from a large chaotic market called ?Sugu ba,? an intense zone of capitalism in this capital, where French paraphernalia is discovered finally at ?Chez les Chinois,? on the edge of the market.

Rows of Chinese-owned stores sell an array of goods, ranging from plastics to electronics.

In the first shop the owner says she ran out of flags days ago, that boxes of French flags that sat on the floor for years, were now gone. But more are coming from her homeland, China, she asserts.

Along the row, nearly every shop was sold out of French goods, most in the last few days.

As I field a phone call in the halls of the House of China, my Malian guides discover with some disappointment that I am an American, not a Frenchman.

But they quickly recover: ?No, no, no... it?s ok, it?s ok,? one guide, Moussa says in strained English. ?Obama is?still good, but [French President] Hollande saved us, he saved Mali.??

New production of Rossini's Cinderella a delight

VIENNA (AP) ? There is no pumpkin-turned-coach on the stage, no glass slipper, no fairy godmother, and the action takes place in an imaginary Italian duchy in the 1950s. But Gioachino Rossini's take on Cinderella remains utterly magical in the new version being put on by the Vienna State Opera.

While all operas stand or fall on the quality of their singers, La Cenerentola presents a particular challenge, with solos replete with florid vocalization, full-out crescendos and sustained, flowing melodic lines.

But all soloists passed the test with full honors ? and then some ? in the production that premiered Saturday.

As Angelina ? Rossini's Cenerentola, or Cinderella ? mezzo Tara Erraught unleashed an array of coloratura fireworks in a role that affords opportunities for vocal pyrotechnics like few others.

"Non piu mesta" ? where Angelina, the prince by her side, announces that she forgives her cruel step-sisters and step-father ? is considered one of opera's most difficult arias. No problem for Erraught. Her rendition perfectly mirrored Angelina's transition from a servant singing a simple ditty at the fireside to a princess in full embellished voice.

While he was describing the opera in general terms two centuries ago, feared Vienna critic Eduard Hanslick could have been referring to Erraught's performance when he wrote: "This ... Cinderella is in fact a Cinderella in clothing only; her singing brims over with pearls, velvet and silk."

A hard act to match ? and as Don Ramiro, Angelina's prince, Dmitry Korchak was almost equal to the task.

"Almost," only because his light tenor initially threatened to get lost in the orchestra. But Korchak gained in confidence ? and his voice in power ? effortlessly pinpointing his high C's in "Si ritrovarla io giuro," as he declared that he will find the girl who so enchanted him at the ball, no matter what it takes.

But to do so, he must get past Angelina's step-father, who keeps her in ashes while he plots the prince's marriage to one of his two daughters. As the bumbling Don Magnifico, Alessandro Corbelli was indeed Mr. Magnificent Saturday, bringing the mean and scheming persona to life in a humorously endearing way.

Apropos of mean and scheming: Valentina Nafornita and Margarita Gritskova are beauties visually and vocally but convincingly rotten to the core in their roles as Clorinda and Tisbe, Don Magnificio's preening daughters

Also good ? Vito Priante as Dandini, the prince's servant, and Ildebrando D'Arcengelo as Alidoro, the prince's philosopher. As this Cinderella's de-facto fairy godfather, he pulls the strings behind the scenes to bring the story to a happy ending.

But there is no happy ending in any opera unless the orchestra is up to scratch. With Rossini specialist Jesus Lopez-Cobos conducting, musicians of the Vienna State Opera delivered a sparking rendition of a vibrant and complex score. Good singing by members of the Vienna State Orchestra Choir rounded out the evening, in a production as pleasing visually as it was musically.

After the first performance flopped in 1817, Rossini was optimistic proclaiming: "People will love this opera."

    They did Saturday.

Yum's chicken in China contained excessive levels of drugs - Xinhua

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Chicken sold to KFC's parent Yum Brands Inc in China contained excessive levels of chemicals, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Friday, escalating a month-long food scare that has hit Yum's sales in its biggest market.

The Shanghai Municipal Food Safety Committee said KFC's checks on its suppliers were lax, and that it found excessive levels of chemical residue in some of the fast food chain's supplies, the report said.

The investigation has now been passed to authorities where the suppliers are based, Xinhua said, without elaborating.

Officials at the Food Safety Committee and Yum in China could not immediately be reached for comment.

Yum and McDonald's Corp's have come under intense scrutiny from local media since the official China Central Television reported in late December that some of the chicken supplied to them contained excess amounts of antiviral drugs and hormones used to accelerate growth.

On investigating, the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration found the levels of antibiotics and steroids in KFC chicken were safe, though the watchdog found a suspicious level of an antiviral drug in one of the eight samples tested.

Yum warned earlier in the month that sales in China - where it earns over half of its worldwide revenue and operating profit - shrank more than expected in the fourth quarter, citing bad publicity from a government review of its chicken supply.

Yum has apologized to customers in China over its handling of the food scare.

McDonald's Chief Executive Don Thompson said on Wednesday the chicken scare "minimally impacted" McDonald's sales in China during the fourth quarter and continues to hurt business this year.

Positive Mindsets Make For Positive Relationships | Your Marriage ...

Positive Mindsets Make For Positive Relationships (Part 1 of a 3 part series)

    ?

This blog series will give a perspective as to how to develop a positive mindset, which in turn will help make your relationship a positive and happy one.

We all have voices in our heads. We have the logical voice and the emotional voice.? Often times the emotional voice is the negative one. When we have a negative thought or reaction we also have a physical sensation that accompanies it in our body; if we are upset our stomach may hurt.? For example ? Joe borrows Mary?s car and he get?s a scratch on it. Mary?s first response, might be; ?You idiot, why weren?t you more careful??? After Mary responds like that maybe her head starts to hurt from yelling at Joe; that response will probably not get a good reaction from Joe.

The negative thought combined with its accompanying feeling is a very powerful force inside of us and often dominates our thoughts, feelings and actions.? To effectively relate to this negative force we have to look for our logical voice.? This is not to say that we should ignore our feelings; however, our response should be driven by the voice that is most likely to take us to a place where we have a positive outcome.

In our example, for Mary to get? the best reaction from Joe, she has to stop and think, ?What do I want?? Mary is interested in getting Joe to get her car fixed and pay for the damage and she also doesn?t want to have lasting hard feelings as a result of the accident. In addition, she wants believe that Joe will be careful with her property. ?If Mary has a positive mindset she will get much better results, if not there could easily be an upsetting argument, which may hurt their relationship.

In my next blog, I will talk about two steps to use to get the voices in your head to help you to get a positive mindset.? In the last blog in this series, I will give you my six step process to get yourself to behave in a way that moves you toward the best solution possible.

Beyond room service: Order up a fighter

    21 hrs.

Hotel guests need not head out with an unknown entity for adventure when they book a room. Properties around the globe are tempting travelers with one-of-a-kind experiences on the grounds or directly through the hotel.?

Whether you fancy a Muay Thai lesson with a fighter in Bangkok or an exclusive cooking class in Costa Rica, if you choose well, your hotel can arrange a day you'll remember long after check-out.

?Hotels are just now recognizing that they have resources that other travel-related industries have been tapping for years,? said?Ted Mandigo, director of hotel consulting firm?TR Mandigo & Company. The?company has tracked the travel habits of U.S. consumers for more than?20 years. ?Hotels have been passive providers, nicely fitting into the travel industry, but not aggressively promoting their resources,? he said.

Now that properties see the light, they're getting on the bandwagon with an array of offerings.?

For wannabe fighters, or anyone drawn to the idea of punching and kicking a champion Muay Thai fighter, guests at the Peninsula Bangkok can go a few rounds with a real live kickboxer at an outdoor makeshift ring overlooking the Chao Phraya, commemorated with photo, certificate and boxing shorts.

At The Wauwinet in Nantucket, Mass., guests can try their hand at hauling in lobster traps aboard The Wauwinet Lady. The hotel chef will later prepare a lobster feast with their catch. Those who would prefer to limit their catch to waves can learn from the resident professional surfer at Anantara Dhigu Resort & Spa in the Maldives, with beginner lessons that include everything a surfer newbie may need. ?

Not?that into the hang ten scene? Those aspiring to dance with the stars can learn the tango without leaving the hotel at Tango Lodge Palermo Soho in Buenos Aires. The six-days-a-week classes always include an English speaker.

These activities tap into the need to?experience something "new and different" that Peter C. Yesawich, vice chairman of MMGY Global (a marketing communications company specializing in the travel, leisure and entertainment industries) says has ?become increasingly important for consumers when selecting hotel or resort accommodations ? particularly true for younger (millennial) travelers. It's access to experiences that would otherwise be 'inaccessible' that appear to be growing in their allure."

Andrea Duvall, an avid traveler from Louisville, Ky., took advantage of?just such an exclusive-to-hotel-guests option: a cooking class at Los Altos de Eros, a small hotel in Costa Rica.?

?It?s a remote hotel on top of a hotel,? she said. ?The class was an easy option rather than arranging transfers to offsite activities, and a great way to learn to prepare local food yourself.??

Duvall said?she and her husband?seek out uniquely local experiences and this fit the bill.?

?The experience we had felt very intimate,? she said. ?We were literally in the kitchen of the property ? it felt like an authentic experience?versus?a big cooking school off-site.?

While offering experiences are??savvy selling points for hotels trying to distinguish themselves,??some can be??terrific perks,? according to Pauline Frommer, nationally-syndicated host of "The Travel Show" with Clear Channel Media. She offers a word of caution: "Sometimes hotel tours and additional activities are not the best value because they've been simply thrown together in an attempt to get more money."

?Independently-arranged activities can be more interesting because they'll draw the kind of thinking traveler who researches his options in advance ... and the variety of travelers will be greater,??Frommer said.??Remember, a lot of the travel experience consists of interacting with other travelers, so getting out of your hotel can be a good idea.?

The AJC reviews LPC, Midtown | Food and More with John Kessler

    $$-$$$

Since opening in the fall of 2008, La Pietra Cucina in Midtown had its fair share of growing pains.

For nearly nine months, diners walked through the vast, unfinished space that once was MidCity cuisine to sit in the temporary dining room in the small back bar. But, despite the unorthodox layout, Chef Bruce Logue turned out his progressive Italian cuisine to nearly unanimous critical fanfare. Even after the full remodeled dining room opened in May of 2009, the restaurant faced an obvious cohesiveness problem, but remained buoyed by the strength of Logue?s dishes. But when Logue left in March of 2012, it was time for La Pietra Cucina to adapt.

One obvious improvement is in the remodeling. Gone are the maroon and gold velvet-heavy walls and gaudy chandeliers, replaced with a brighter and more modern feeling dining room. The Johnson Studio teamed up with Concentrics to make the space more inviting, with sharper lines, more natural light, and the addition of a window into the kitchen, further opening up the space.

You may recognize new Executive Chef Russell Kook, if not from his time at The Florentine or CUT Steakhouse in Chicago, than from his runner-up finish on season 8 of Hell?s Kitchen. Of all of the players in the reinvention of LPC, I envy Kook the least. Given that Logue?s cooking was easily the best part of the old La Pietra Cucina, Kook is tasked with fixing one of the only things here that wasn?t broken. But to compare their food as apples-to-apples is unfair, as the new LPC focuses on a more casual take on refined Italian cuisine.

Kook?s new menu focuses more on small, shareable plates, offering pasta dishes in half and full servings, and now includes a small selection of thin crust pizzas. The only holdover from the previous menu is the immensely popular squid ink spaghetti ($11/$19), but other than the purplish black pasta, little remains from the old dish. Instead of shrimp and Calabrese sausage, Kook features blue crab, Serrano, grapefruit, and sea urchin. While I may wish to taste Logue?s original again someday, I?m more than happy with the rich blend of fresh crab and sea urchin in front of me.

Though a little cumbersome, we thoroughly enjoy the bruschetta of the day ($7), topped with ricotta, sopressata, cannellini beans, garlic bread crumbs, and pickled onion. And the Brussels sprouts salad ($12) surprises, arriving more of a slaw of shredded Brussels sprouts tossed with hardboiled egg, pecorino, almonds, and a light lemon vinaigrette.

But it is the pan fried octopus ($15) that steals my heart. I?d forgotten just how tender the usually tough cephalopod can be when prepared correctly. The thick fork-tender tentacle, lightly fried, arrives atop a nest of grilled frisee and pickled pearl onions, but it is the smoky and spicy arrabiata sauce that best accents the meat. This dish will convert many of the octopus haters among you.

I?ll admit to some skepticism over the addition of pizza to the retooled menu. It felt too much like a transparent attempt to class-down the menu, an obvious choice to show just how casual the new LPC would be. However, my fear was unfounded. Though it would make a perfectly fine meal for one, I suggest splitting the mushroom pizza ($13) as an appetizer. The thin-crust, sauceless pie packs a lot of flavor, all earthy fungus and funky taleggio punctuated by sweet caramelized onions and pungent garlic chips.

It isn?t until the entrees that I find the first real let-downs of the experience. A beautifully cooked, velvety-soft braised short rib ($25) promises a hearty and rich conclusion to my meal, only to come up under seasoned and a little bland. And I have to assume that Kook doesn?t intend his prosciutto swapped monkfish ($27) to arrive so overcooked that the pork turns leathery and the fish dry.

Overall, I would call LPC?s makeover a success, correcting many of the issues that once detracted from the dining experience. But I have to wonder if an injection of casual into a menu that once wowed us was the best call. Kook is an excellent chef, displaying brilliance in more than a few dishes, but there are still a few consistency kinks to work out, and I?d to see him push the envelope further than a ?casual take? might allow. Regardless, the new LPC is definitely one to watch.
