Nutrition Plans For Weight Loss | Healthy Lifestyle

Article by JAMIE BELL

One of the most successful nutrition plans for weight loss to be introduced in recent years is the Jillian Michaels weight-loss plan. The plan accounts for three major factors which influence weight loss success in the long term: self, sweat and science. The plan recognizes that the process of losing weight is both a physical and a mental one, and aims to provide a gimmick-free plan for lifelong health and fitness. The plan recognizes that all of the conflicting information about nutrition can leave many dieters feeling lost and frustrated, and breaks down exactly what you should eat to lose weight in a steady and sustainable way. The nutrition plan helps people to discover which foods are optimal for their body type and metabolic rate, the number of calories they should eat each day to ensure successful weight loss, recipes fully customized to body type that are delicious and easy to prepare, and tips and strategies for eating out without straying from your plan.

Today Show nutrition expert Joy Bauer has formulated one of the simplest nutrition plans for weight loss available. Her highly popular diet is now an easy step-by-step online diet program which is fully customized for you to get the best possible result. The plan emphasizes plenty of healthy carbohydrates such as whole grains, lean protein, fresh fruit and vegetables ? plus a range of delicious and satisfying treats that you can enjoy guilt-free. There are plenty of online tools to help you along the way, including a calorie calculator which will provide you with the nutritional information of thousands of foods to help you make diet-friendly choices; a meal planner and hundreds of healthy recipes to help you get started in the kitchen; and a food log for recording what you eat during the day, so that you can track your weight loss properly. The program offers a free diet profile ? participants take a quick and easy quiz and receive a personalized eating plan which is based on the principles of Joy?s Food Cures.

The South Beach diet has been enormously popular in recent years, thanks to the endorsement of the diet plan by a number of high-profile celebrities, with more than 5 million copies of the book sold in the US alone. This is considered to be one of the best diets that work. Originally formulated by Dr Agatson, one of America?s leading cardiologists, as a diet plan for his heart patients to improve cardiac health, it soon demonstrated its effectiveness as a weight loss plan. Like many recent nutrition plans for weight loss, the South Beach Diet is based on the principles of the GI diet. After an initial period of restricted carbohydrates, the diet slowly reintroduces foods which score low on the glycaemic index, helping to break the cycle of carb binges and emotional eating which many dieters falls into. During this first phase, simple carbs such as cereal, white bread, sweets, cake, alcohol, potatoes and bagels are banned. The

New Project Makes Investing In Female Entrepreneurs a Win-Win ...

Small business owners make the economy go ?round, employing millions of people around the country and helping our economy bounce back from one of the biggest recessions in our history. Despite their importance, many small business owners, especially women, find it very difficult to find funding. Now, a new project by the?Calvert Foundation makes investing in women-owned businesses and community projects a WIN-WIN.

The Calvert Foundation?s?Women Investing In Women Initiative, allows individuals to invest in women-run?projects for as little as $20 and make a return on their investment. The WIN-WIN project also allows small business owners to qualify for low-interest loans they can use to fund their projects.

Alex Goldmark of GOOD breaks it down:

The Calvert Foundation?affiliated with, but distinct from, the Calvert family of socially responsible mutual funds?aims to raise $20 million through WIN-WIN. Calvert will loan the money to businesses that serve women as the core clients, microfinance groups that lend to women, or woman-run small business. The money might also be used to nudge gender-motivated change in other businesses.

?Every penny of the money goes to the investment itself,? Hall says. A separate stream of donations covers operating costs, with about $100 in gifts leveraging $500 in investments. Foundations and corporations have ponied up the initial support. The interest paid back on the loan to the foundation will go to investors.

A maximum 2 percent return on investment may not be as high as other investment opportunities, but Hall expects investors to be motivated by cause as well as profit. Women entrepreneurs reinvest in their communities more than men who earn the same amount,?creating a bigger multiplier effect.

So far the WIN-WIN project has raised over $300,000 from just 64 investors in the past few weeks and they are hoping to attract many more people to the cause.

Find out more about the WIN-WIN project and how you can become an investor on their website.?

US kids clamor for Congress to act against Kony

(AP Photo, File)

(AP) ? The voices demanding that Congress stop the brutality of African warlord Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army belong to America's children.

Just ask their parents.

"All three of my kids, in different context and different times, said, 'So what are you doing about Joseph Kony and the LRA?'" Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., said in a recent interview. Coons, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations African affairs subcommittee, is father to twins Michael and Jack, 12, and Maggie, 11.

"Mom, you have to watch this video," Mary Shannon, the 14-year-old daughter of Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., insisted during a break from school. "It's about Joseph Kony."

Coons and Landrieu know all too well about Kony. The two senators have traveled to Africa and have heard firsthand about the killings and child abductions of tens of thousands in Central Africa, the young boys forced to fight as soldiers, the girls turned into sex slaves.

Today, the lawmakers' children, and millions of others in the United States and around the world, are almost as well-versed about Kony's 26-year reign of terror. A 30-minute video by the advocacy group Invisible Children to raise public awareness about the guerrilla group exploded on the Internet after its early March release. The Kony2012 video has been viewed by some 100 million on YouTube and shared on Facebook and Twitter.

"There's 100 million people who know the name of a war criminal now that didn't necessarily before, and that's a good thing," actor and activist George Clooney, who is part of a video on the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan, said in a recent interview.

The confluence of a compelling film focused on the fate of children, the power of social media to spread information instantaneously and an unprecedented global connection has turned Kony into a household name. High school and middle school students ? some as young as 10, the same age as some of the LRA's victims ? are outraged that children are suffering.

One group of students experienced a unique civics lesson.

Last week, Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., conducted a Skype interview with a 6th grade social studies class from Westside Middle School in Winder, Ga. The first question Isakson got from the 30 students was "Are you doing anything about Joseph Kony?"

"It's a tragedy," Isakson, the top Republican on the African affairs subcommittee, said of the atrocities. He told the students that President Barack Obama dispatched 100 U.S. troops ? mostly Army Special Forces ? to central Africa in October to advise regional forces in their hunt for Kony, a military move that received strong bipartisan support.

Dustin Davis, who teaches the Westside class, said his students heard about Kony from the Internet, raised questions in class and discussed it as part of the current events curriculum. Some students were near tears; some boys were ready to take up arms and fight.

"My students were very adamant that they want to do more about it," Davis said in an interview. "And part of what I do is teach them what is the role of a citizen in our country. You make contact with your representatives, and you do it daily if need be. That's the only way things are going to happen, is if you put pressure on your representatives."

In recent weeks, a bipartisan group of 40 senators led by Coons and Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., has backed a resolution condemning Kony. The measure also endorses the effort by Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and South Sudan to stop him and the LRA. It signals support for the U.S. effort to help regional forces pursue commanders of the militia group.

Lawmakers also are crafting legislation that would offer a monetary reward for information leading to Kony's arrest, with a bill to be introduced this month. Kony is wanted by the International Criminal Court for heinous attacks in multiple countries. Pushing to raise awareness, several lawmakers also will appear in a video.

Coons realized the extent of the response when he took his daughter, Maggie, to a Saturday rehearsal of the play "Flat Stanley" and saw the Kony2012 posters at the Wilmington (Del.) Friends school. On the sidelines of his son's lacrosse game, parents questioned him and tried to make sense of their children's interest in a brutal warlord. The senator posted a video along with facts and figures about Kony and a map of Africa on his website.

"The most positive thing is to have a moment when literally millions of Americans are asking for more engagement in Africa," he said. "That happens once a generation."

Rebecca Zug, the head of the upper school at Wilmington Friends, said the Kony2012 campaign resonated with students by focusing on the "clear injustice of kidnapping children" and then empowered young people with simple tasks ? putting up posters and using social media.

"They really want the world to be a better place, and I think as adults we hesitate and go, 'Gosh, I didn't come up with that lesson plan,'" Zug said in an interview. "Where are the adults in charge, because this is really a youth movement."

Ben Keesey, CEO of Invisible Children, said Kony's brutality has a different impact on children.

"Young kids put themselves in the shoes of having to live in fear of being abducted, and that's just a paralyzing thought," he said.

At New Milford High School in New Jersey, principal Eric Sheninger said students who saw the video talked about Kony before school, during lunch periods and in the hallways. Teachers in classes on the Holocaust and genocide held lengthy discussions about the LRA.

"There was an incredible buzz in the school," Sheninger said, though the issue has quieted down since the video's release.

Landrieu's daughter and her friends are writing letters appealing to the relevant congressional committees to act. The senator introduced a resolution last week commending the African Union for committing up to 5,000 troops in the hunt for Kony.

"The children are getting us to respond," Landrieu said in an interview.

In the Invisible Children video, a global issue is presented through the eyes of a child, with a discussion between Jason Russell, the director and co-founder of the group, and his young son Gavin about stopping the bad guys. The Kony2012 campaign is pressing on despite several setbacks for Invisible Children, including Russell's recent hospitalization and diagnosis of brief psychosis.

A follow-up video may be released. Although the group has spoken at school assemblies, the response to Kony2012 exceeded expectations.

"It's a testament to the fact that when young people are given an opportunity to do good, they will respond," Keesey said.

Mariners and Athletics likely will pay a price for playing in Japan

Anyone who has made the flight to - and from - Japan knows the toll it can take on the body.

When that body has to then play professional baseball, the residual effect of jet lag becomes a legitimate cause of concern. Before the Mariners and Athletics, six teams had opened the season in Tokyo, and it appears there was at least some price to pay for traveling nearly 10,000 miles round-trip (even farther for East Coast ballclubs).

It?s clearly not doing irreparable damage, mind you. The 2000 Mets played in Japan and went on to win the National League pennant and advance to their only World Series in the last 25 years. The 2004 Yankees played in Japan, won 101 games and were a victory away from the World Series before collapsing in the ALCS while up three games to none against the Red Sox [team stats] (I don?t think we can blame that on a Japan trip six months earlier). The 2008 Red Sox played in Japan and won 95 games, advancing to the ALCS.

But there have been a lot of slow starts associated with teams that played in Japan, both by teams and individuals. Those pennant-bound Mets won their first game back (they had to get right back into games that count after playing in Tokyo, unlike the current week off that subsequent teams, including the M?s and A?s, are getting), then lost five of six. Their opponents, the Cubs (on the way to a 97-loss season) lost their first three games back, and five of their first six. After a three-game winning streak, they then lost nine of 11.

The powerhouse 2004 Yankees started 8-11 after returning from Japan. Their opponents, the Rays (en route to 91 losses), got off to a 10-28 start once back from Japan. They also became the first team in MLB history to fall as many as 18 games under .500 and return to .500 in the same season. The 2008 A?s, on the other hand, got off to a great start - 17-10, and were still over .500 as late as July 28 before losing 10 in a row, en route to an ultimate 75-86 finish.

Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated, in a column touting the virtues of the trip, did the math and discovered that the six previous teams in Japan played losing baseball in their first 10 games back in North America (29-31) compared to .518 afterward.

Verducci wrote, "They will pay for their trip with jet lag, exhaustion and disruption of the usual rhythms of baseball. ... What they gain for themselves, especially in the cultural realm, and for the sport far outweigh a few weeks of inconvenience."

That?s certainly the stance of commissioner Bud Selig, who told me in 2000, reacting to criticism of the trip, "What we?re doing here is what anyone would do in the 21st century. It?s a global economy. It?s not the world of the 1950s or 1960s. I was struck reading some of the critical columns about this trip that it was like they were writing in 1942, when we had isolationism. It?s not that world anymore.

"People say, ?How dare you play in Japan? It?s a sacred American institution.? I reject that as out of touch with the time we live in, and irrelevant. Someone told me that once we were in Japan, we?d wonder what took us so long. I think that?s exactly the way we feel."

Major League Baseball learned from the Mets and Cubs that teams couldn?t just go right back into their regular schedule. So subsequent teams have returned from Japan and eased back in with exhibition games, which seems weird but beats the alternative. Another change since 2000 is that the traveling teams now resume their season against each other, somewhat mitigating the disadvantage of the arduous travel.

But the effects could linger. Joe Girardi, catcher for the Cubs team that opened in Japan in 2000, told The New York Times [NYT] that "a lot of us woke up at 3:30 in the morning for two weeks after we got back."

The A?s elected to go home, rather than back to Arizona. They played an exhibition game in Sacramento against their Class AAA affiliate on Saturday night, and will face their rival Giants on Monday through Wednesday before resuming the season against Seattle on Friday at the Oakland Coliseum.

The A?s also opened spring training a week after the Mariners, who opted for the earlier start to prepare for the earlier opening day. And the Mariners still have more travel after leaving Oakland. They head to Texas for four games with the Rangers before finally returning home April 13 to face - Oakland.

Of course, it?s impossible to calculate definitively the effects of all that travel. Some players, and teams, struggle early even without going to Japan. The Rays were 1-8 out of the gate last year and the Red Sox were 2-10; Tampa Bay made the postseason, and it took an epic collapse to keep Boston out.

As Terry Francona, then Red Sox manager, said in 2008, "We can talk about this until we?re blue in the face. Every time we walk somebody or we make an error, somebody asks did the Japan trip (hurt)? Our job is to play good baseball. When we play good baseball, it?s OK."
