Strasburg sharp vs. Braves

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:22 p.m. ET June 2, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) - Even though Stephen Strasburg is on a three-game winning streak, his most recent starts hadn't been especially smooth. On Saturday, he threw freely and easily, pitching four-hit ball for seven sharp innings to help lead the Washington Nationals over the Atlanta Braves 2-0.

Strasburg (6-1) completed seven shutout innings for the first time in his major league career. He opened the game with a flourish, striking out the first four Braves batters.

Strasburg struck out nine, walked none and threw 90 pitches. Twice he gave up singles and then induced double-play grounders.

The right-hander allowed multiple baserunners just once - in the third when Jose Constanza doubled and Michael Bourn singled with one out.

"I just expected a little bit too much out of myself and it was kind of getting me away from what I was trying to do, what I wanted to do out there. Today was huge for me to go out there and keep it simple," Strasburg said.

In his last two starts, both wins, he was pulled after five innings, but Strasburg was so economical with this pitches that manager Davey Johnson thought he could have gone longer.

"He had another inning or two in him," Johnson said.

Less than two years removed from Tommy John surgery, Strasburg is on a strict innings limit, and Johnson is cutting them when he can.

Strasburg would have liked to pitch longer.

"I felt like I was getting stronger as the game went on, so it's tough, but it's his call," Strasburg said.

"He's back. I don't think he ever left. In his mind, he left," Johnson said.

Atlanta second baseman Dan Uggla struck out twice and grounded into a double play against Strasburg. In his previous at-bats against him, Uggla was 6 for 8 with two home runs and seven RBIs.

"He was electric. He's always electric, but today he was hitting his spots, had his curve ball going, his changeup was nasty," Uggla said.

Johnson said he heard Uggla grousing about Strasburg's stuff, but he couldn't repeat what he said.

"It was obvious he wasn't going to give him anything today," Johnson said.

Sean Burnett gave up two singles in a scoreless eighth and Tyler Clippard pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save in fifth chances.

Brandon Beachy (5-4) allowed just three hits in 6 1-3 innings. He has lost three straight decisions and Atlanta has dropped nine of 11.

"Can't make mistakes in a game like that and I made far too many of them. I put people on and they're going to score," Beachy said.

"I just wasn't locating my fastball again today which leads to me throwing way too many pitches. Bad things happen.

The game was scoreless when Jesus Flores led off the fifth by hitting a drive into the left-field bullpen for his second home run of the year.

In the seventh, Beachy was pulled with one out after Danny Espinosa walked. Espinosa stole second and Chad Durbin walked Flores.

Both runners moved up on a wild pitch from Jonny Venters that hit catcher Brian McCann, forcing him to leave with a bruise near his left knee. McCann said he had to leave because he couldn't get down on his knees.

Espinosa scored on pinch-hitter Xavier Nady's double to right.

NOTES: McCann was replaced at catcher by David Ross, who hadn't played since May 25 with a strained right groin. .... Washington RF Michael Morse made his season debut after missing nearly the first two months of the season with a strained back muscle. He grounded out to short in all four at-bats. ... Johnson said that C Wilson Ramos would miss the rest of the season because doctors were unable to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament and torn meniscus at the same time. When doctors repaired the meniscus, they thought the ligament needed time to heal and the ACL surgery will have to wait. ... Washington RHP Brad Lidge (sports hernia) says he'll have three rehab appearances next week for Class A Potomac. ... Atlanta SS Andrelton Simmons made his major league debut. He was 0 for 3. ... Braves RHP Tommy Hanson (5-4, 3.84) will pitch against Nationals LHP Gio Gonzalez (7-1, 2.04) on Sunday.

FREE FISHING WEEKEND IS JUNE 2-3 | The Prowers Journal

DENVER ? With waters warming and rivers running clear, Colorado Parks and Wildlife is inviting anglers young and old to take advantage of Colorado?s annual free fishing weekend this Saturday and Sunday.??

The agency traditionally sets aside the first full weekend in June to promote sport fishing. For this weekend only, anglers are not required to have a valid fishing license in order to wet a line.?

?Fishing is one of Colorado?s most important outdoor traditions and a great way to hook kids on healthy outdoor recreation,? said Greg Gerlich, aquatic section manager for Colorado Parks and Wildlife. ?Free fishing weekend also gives anglers who haven?t fished for a while a chance to reconnect with the simple pleasure of being on the water.??

While no fishing license is required during free fishing weekend, all other regulations remain in effect, including bag and possession limits, and restrictions on bait in certain waters. Anglers should consult the 2012 Colorado Fishing brochure for regulations and restrictions.?

Each year, Colorado Parks and Wildlife stocks more than 3 million catchable-sized trout and 14 million trout fingerlings. The agency also stocks more than 64 million warm-water fry and fingerlings around the state each year. Fully half of the 85 million fish produced by Colorado?s hatchery system are planted in state park waters each year.?

With the exception of free fishing weekend, anglers between the ages of 16 and 64 are required to have a valid Colorado fishing license before casting a line. Annual resident fishing licenses cost $26 and one-day or five-day licenses are also available. Youth under age 16 are not required to have a license. Resident seniors aged 65 and older can buy an annual Colorado fishing license for $1.??

For more information on state fishing regulations, the current Colorado fishing brochure is available online at http://wildlife.state.co.us/RulesRegs/RegulationsBrochures/. An interactive version of the brochure available on the web site provides links to maps and useful videos for beginning to experienced anglers.?

Colorado Parks and Wildlife was created by the merger of Colorado State Parks and the Colorado Division of Wildlife, two nationally recognized leaders in conservation, outdoor recreation and wildlife management. Colorado Parks and Wildlife manages 42 state parks, all of Colorado?s wildlife, more than 300 state wildlife areas and a host of recreational programs.??

Awkward Moments | Laugh With Us Blog

By EstherIrish, on May 31st, 2012

I wanted to get out of the house for Memorial Day.? My niece Andrea has been staying with me for about two weeks.? Andrea and my sister Miriam and her little boy all joined us at the park.? We were able to visit a little while all the kids played.? When everyone began getting hungry and thirsty we loaded up and drove to the near by In-N-Out.

By the time we walked in I was completely frazzled.? The kids were running all over the place.? I thought I should take them to find tables.? Grabbing the hand of the child nearest to me with one hand and swinging Bobby around in his car seat with the other I half shouted to Jason, ?You?re ordering for all of us right?? We?ll just go sit down.?? He looked at me kind of strange.? Right about then several men walked in behind us.? One of the men said something to me and laughed.? I had no idea what he had said so I asked him to repeat it.? He said it again and then the other two men laughed.? That?s when I noticed one of the guys looked familiar.? ?Oh hi!?? I said to them all still not catching on to their joke or what ever was funny.

I got everyone situated and firmly planted on chairs.? Whew.? I took a deep breath.? Then I looked at Andrea who was sitting in front of me and said, more loudly than I intended, ?I have absolutely no idea what those men were saying to me.? Do you??? Then out of the corner of my eye I realized that one of the men was sitting right in front of me.?I wanted to crawl into a very deep hole!? So embarrassing!? I looked up and saw my husband talking to the other two.? Then it hit me.? I knew exactly who these people were.? Of course.? They go to our church and while I?ve talked to them before, I?m much more familiar with the women of the family who unfortunately for me happened not to be present on this day.

I would like to recognize my community leaders for May.? This has been an especially busy month for me with a road trip and company staying with me.? Extra thanks to my leaders who did a great job while I?ve been away.? (Leaders? beliefs and/or opinions do not necessarily reflect those of LaughWithUsBlog.)? I?d love for you to visit their blogs!

SOPA, CISPA and Other Cyber Laws: The Impact on Business

Rules that strengthen security and protect intellectual property may sound good for business at first, but some critics are concerned proposed laws like the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), Protect IP Act (PIPA), Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (CISPA), and Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) may pose threats to Internet job creators and innovators. Some of these proposed rules like SOPA and PIPA have been taken off the table for now ? but threaten to rear their ugly heads in various forms.

An Overview

The pros and cons of SOPA and PIPA. Though both laws have been taken off the table in Washington (for now), chances are that similar intellectual property and security regulations for the Internet will continue to be floated. Here are the facts behind these proposed laws and a look at the arguments for and against their implementation. Would your company do well or poorly in a SOPA world? PC World

Do CISPA, SOPA, and PIPA supporters understand the Internet? It?s a question posed by blogger Mike Masnick when examining people like Chris Dodd, Chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America, who claims the Internet was developed by strict copyright enforcement. Many opponents of SOPA and PIPA respect intellectual property but have other concerns about the slippery slopes the regulations may represent. TechDirt

CISPA Rising

CISPA emerges following SOPA and PIPA. Is the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act of 2012 an honest attempt to improve security in the online world, or just the latest in an attempt to attack online privacy and liberty? Jim Harper, Director of Information Policy Studies at the Cato Institute has some definite opinions. Cato@Liberty

Microsoft and Facebook support CISPA, but should you? The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act could let government agencies gain access to customer data from Internet service providers and websites if that data represents a threat to cyber-security. But how exactly is this threat defined, and what could the new Internet regulation mean to privacy and freedom? Lifehacker

Security and Freedom

SOPA and PIPA foreshadow battle over Internet control. Who should control the Internet? The battles over SOPA and PIPA, which raised many concerns about intellectual property versus freedom of expression, may have only been the first volley. In December, 193 nations gather in Dubai for renegotiation of the United Nations treaty on International Telecommunications Regulations. What will the impact be on you and your business? Vanity Fair

Do SOPA, PIPA, and CISPA undermine your rights? Internet threats are quite real, says?US policy advisor and computer scientist, David Gewirtz, but are not neutralized by legislation that curbs online liberties. Some of those security regulations?he mentions SOPA, PIPA and CISPA specifically?are misguided efforts that, in reality, protect special interests while they erode our liberty. ZDNet

Concerns Abound

Internet Defense League started. So many anti-piracy regulations have been proposed (which critics argue are also anti-freedom) that an organization backed by tech companies like WordPress, Reddit, Cheezburger, and others has been organized to raise awareness of the issues and to organize opposition to those the group believes pose a threat to online freedom. All Things Digital

What age group cares most about Internet freedom? It may not be surprising that concerns over Internet freedom are highest amongst the 18 to 29 demographic. This articles reports on statistics compiled by the Pew Research Center at the height of the controversy over online privacy legislation earlier this year. To what degree do you think creators of online content and online businesses were also concerned? The Atlantic

ACTA: A whole new threat? According to one California congressman, the proposed Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, an international agreement that nations, including the US, are considering, could be a huge threat to ?job creators, Internet service providers, innovators, and individual Americans.? Creative HanZpad hurdles FCC, will deliver ICS and quad-core goodness to China

creative-hanzpad-fcc-quad-core-ICS-tab

Creative Labs might want to get some white gloves, because we recognized its fingerprints on the HanZPad, a Chinese tablet platform which just landed at the FCC. Using its own ZiiLABS division's ZMS-40 ICS optimized SoC (system on chip), the thinnish 7.95mm tab looks to have meaty specs with a quad-core ARM 1.5GHz processor, 1280 x 800 10-inch IPS display, 1GB RAM and microSD slot allowing up to 64GB of external storage. On top of Android 4.0 support, Creative will be developing its own OS for the device, which will be distributed through OEMs and its own channels. While currently tapped for the Chinese market, Creative's weighty US presence may suggest it'll eventually reach across the Pacific -- if it does, let's just hope it leaves the smudges behind.
