LONDON (AP) ? American glam rockers KISS are unleashing their "Monster" on the UK public.

The band ? Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer? was in London on Tuesday to launch its new retrospective book, "KISS Monster," and to hold a news conference.

The limited edition book ? which is three feet (1 meter) tall ? features unseen photographs from the band's 40-year career.

"A band that is bigger than life deserves a book that's bigger than life. You could call it a coffee table book, but if you put legs on it, it is a coffee table," joked Stanley.

Only 1,000 copies of "KISS Monster" will be on sale and each one will be signed by the band. It will retail at a staggering >2,742 ($4,299).

"It's not a cheap book because it is hand bound, hand put together. It's the Rolls-Royce of books," said Simmons.

"KISS Monster" is now on sale in the U.K.

How Healthy (Fit?) Are Americans? | Leisure Fitness Equipment

by Dr. Paul Kennedy ? Leisure Fitness, Wellness Doctor

Every year the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (commonly known as the CDC) gives America an indication of our general health and wellness. The CDC?s National Center for Health Statistics report for 2011 is now available. The report is a result of the 2011 National Health Survey and the results are a bit of a mixed bag. It appears that there are, indeed, areas where American health habits and general health has improved and other areas that continue to be challenging for our nation. As always, it seems, the news is both good and bad. And it also seems, at least to me, that many Americans are having difficulty facing the truth about their own behaviors when it comes to health. For example, the epidemic of obesity and Type 2 diabetes (the ?acquired form?) continues to rise yet only 2.4 % of the population considers their personal level of health as ?poor?!

So that we can finish on a more positive note, let?s take a look and our national health and wellness ?challenges? first and then describe the things that appear to be improving.

As always, you will see that there is a direct correlation a regular fitness program and improved health and wellness. No surprise there, right?

The CHALLENGES:

According to the CDC, self-reported obesity levels in Americans have increased from 19.4% to 28.7% in the last 15 years. The sad part is that the actual rate of obesity is actually somewhat higher (remember that these are ?self-reported? rates) and obesity among children also continues to rise! Of course, this portends higher rates of obesity and cardiovascular disease in the future. What has been considered as the major cause of this continued rise in obesity? The answer is obvious. Poor diets that are high in saturated fats and high in simple carbohydrates such as sugar and high fructose corn syrup are the main culprits. Lack of regular exercise is the other.
One in five adults aged 65 or older has diabetes (usually the ?acquired Type 2) as is the case with one in ten adults aged 45 to 54. In other words, as we age our chances of acquiring diabetes increases and the reasons for this increase have long been known to be poor diets and lack of regular exercise. And the rise in diabetes in all age groups?even children, teens and young adults?continues to rise.

What is the answer to THIS health challenge?
Just as described in the paragraph above, it is a better eating plan and regular exercise!

Are you starting to see a pattern here?

The GOOD NEWS:

After a rise in the percentage of adults that drink five or more alcoholic drinks per day since 2004, that percentage has DROPPED to about 22%. But that still means that more than one in five Americans are drinking more than they should. This is a direct cause of poor nutrition, liver problems and a decline in general health not to mention increased chances of dying or being injured when behind the wheel. The number of Americans who smoke DROPPED from 24.7% in 1997 to 18.9% in 2011. The health and wellness benefits there are obvious to all since smoking is the single greatest cause of premature death!

Another good sign is that 48.4% of Americans aged 18 or older reported that they did some type of aerobic exercise on a regular basis.

This represents a continuing increase in this important health and wellness habit and the percentage was the highest ever recorded! But what this also means is that over half of all Americans DON?T exercise regularly.

EPILOG:

It seems increasing clear that we have a real dichotomy of health habits in America today. After even a brief review of the data, it shows that about half of us are starting to get the message about the relationship between fitness and health and the relationship between proper eating habits and health. And half of us AREN?T getting the message. For those who DON?T get it, understand that just a minimal amount of physical activity each day along with a small reduction in daily calorie intake (say, 200 less calories per day) can, over time produce a multiplicative effect on health and wellness. It simply requires a little self-motivation, commitment and patience.

Let?s make next year?s CDC report on American health habits even better than the last. We?re all in this together!

I?m Dr Paul Kennedy and that?s the ?Be Fit, Stay Fit? Topic of the Month for July 2012. Good luck with YOUR program. I KNOW you can do it!

Islamist destruction in Timbuktu: Why do zealots break stuff?

Ansar Dine, the Islamist militia that shares control of Mali's north, is just the latest in long line of zealots of many faiths who destroyed the monuments of other faiths thought to be superstitious.?

?We?re going to destroy everything before we apply Shariah in this city,? Ansar Dine spokesman Sanda Abu Mohamed told the?Associated Press on Sunday in the ancient city of Timbuktu.

According to Ansar Dine ? a relatively small militant group that shares control of much of northern Mali with other rebel groups and shares the theological outlook of Al Qaeda ? the tombs had to be destroyed because ?the population loves the saints like God.?

Today?s Ansar Dine, of course, is just the latest in a long line of religious dogmatists who came to town and destroyed stuff in the name of God.

In 1192 AD, the Turkic commander Qutbuddin Aynak destroyed a number of Hindu temples near present day New Delhi to?provide building stone for his self-named Qutb Minar. To this day, Hindu nationalists point to this act as an example of Islam's intolerance of other faiths. Yet some scholars, notably Buddhists, contend that Hindus had done similar work with the defunct?temples of their Buddhist rivals.

Roman historians documented how Christian rulers ordered the destruction of pagan temples, and reportedly, the?Library of Alexandria itself in 391 AD. During the Spanish Reconquista, Roman Catholic rulers razed many Islamic prayer halls, although, to their credit, they did leave many magnificent Moorish structures, such as the university at Alhambra, standing. ?

More recently, of course, the Taliban leader Mullah Muhammad Omar ordered the destruction of the Buddhist statues in the Afghan central province of Bamiyan in March 2001. ?All we are breaking are stones," the Taliban leader told reporters in Kandahar at the time, adding, "my job is the implementation of Islamic order."

Each of these perpetrators of destruction, though belonging to different faiths, saw themselves as defenders of their faith, reformers of society, and enemies of superstition. While some of these so-called reformers may have halted the religious practice of others ? as Ansar Dine has halted the reverence of Sufi teachers and saints in Timbuktu this week ? in other cases, the destruction of religious monuments is largely a symbolic and political act. There were no local adherents of Buddhism in Bamiyan, when the Taliban artillery pieces used Buddha?s stone face for target practice. But their action had political power: It signaled to the world, and to the Islamic faithful, that the Taliban?s control of Afghanistan was total. There might be rivals, such as the Northern Alliance of Ahmed Shah Masood, tucked away up in the Panjshir Valley, but there was very little they could do to stop the Taliban from doing what it wanted to do. ?

Mali?s government, which lost control of northern Mali after its own Army launched a coup in March to topple the civilian government, has condemned the Ansar Dine destruction of shrines as a ?war crime.? But with Mali?s politicians primarily focused on finding their place in the current political structure, and with Mali?s Army focused primarily on maintaining its own tenuous control of the political process, there is precious little they can do to stop the Ansar Dine from doing what they want to do up in Timbuktu.

Now, the question will be what will Ansar Dine do with all those private libraries and ancient books from the days when Timbuktu was a famous center of Islamic learning.? Will they revere these books as examples of Islam?s proud history? Or will they see all of those books as threats to the pure true faith taught by the prophet Muhammad in the Quran.

If they do the latter, then we can expect Malians to start smuggling out ancient manuscripts from Timbuktu, just as Afghans smuggled out ancient Buddhist artifacts from Afghanistan during Taliban rule.

Empty promises, then massacre in infamous Kadhafi jail

If the walls of Abu Slim prison could speak, they would tell the horrific tale of two days in 1996 when Moamer Kadhafi's forces gunned down 1,200 inmates.

Those who lived still tremble with the memories of June 28 and 29. The families of those who didn't, who received terse death certificates only 12 years later, continue to be consumed with suffering.

But a three-day exhibition in the gutted grey complex in a southern district of Tripoli invites Libyans to take a deep, hard look at one of the darkest moments of their history, pay tribute to the dead and demand justice.

The target of those demands is Abdullah Senussi, spymaster for the late dictator, whose empty promises to striking prisoners set the stage for the massacre.

Abdesalam al-Ugbi, a 40-year-old sports teacher who lost his brother, insists that Senussi, now being held in Mauritania, be tried in Libya and punished in accordance with the teachings of the Koran.

"We want him to get the death penalty, with the sword, the Islamic way."

It all started when prisoners reportedly overpowered and captured two guards, stripping them of their keys.

Their demands were simple: no more torture, trials, time in the sun, family visits, access to books and information about the outside world, and the punishment of abusive guards.

Abu Slim was a top security prison notorious for torture and human rights abuses during the time of Kadhafi, who ruled with an iron-fist for 42 years until a popular uprising led to his ouster and killing in 2011.

Ali al-Kermi entered Abu Slim when he was just 22 and didn't leave for 28 years. He was arrested in 1984 for belonging to Liberation, an underground movement dedicated to creating an Islamic state in Libya.

In fluent French, he recalls the agony endured by prisoners.

Electroshock, rubbing salt on razor cuts, ripping out nails and teeth, hanging prisoners on a rod like a "roasted chicken," beating the soles of the feet and and penetration with white-hot metal rods.

Now a father of four, the youngest of whom is only 39 days old, he heads an association for prisoners of conscience.

Kermi said he was in a different wing of the prison the day hundreds were shot dead. He remembers hearing the terrifying racket of bullets raining from soldiers on the rooftop.

How it all started has become part of the collective memory.

As the story goes, Senussi came to speak with the prisoners. He negotiated the release of the captive guards and promised there would be no reprisals.

Sheikh Mohammed Abu Sedra said he told Senussi the prisoners wanted "either to live as honourable people or die as martyrs. You are trying to kill us your way; we want to die our way."

He told AFP Senussi approved most of the demands as reasonable but said any trial of prison guards would have to be sanctioned by Kadhafi.

"We asked people to please get back in (to their cells) because they told us we would be safe," said Abu Sedra, who spent 21 years in Abu Slim, adding that he survived "only by the grace of God."

But many of the prisoners saw it coming, hugging each other and begging each other for forgiveness in what proved to be their final moments.

United in grief and the desire to see the perpetrators tried, entire families drift as in a dream through damp corridors and into tiny, sombre cells that were once packed tight with more than 20 men each.

Only in his forties, but already an old man, Khaled is agitated as he brings his new wife to his old cell and shares the details of his most troubled days: "See these holes? It was the only to way to speak to our friends. There was no electricity."

He says he was jailed for wearing a long beard and calling for an Islamic state during a "tyrannical regime that manipulated and distorted the Muslim faith to oppress its people."

Sumaya Mohammed, who lost four siblings in the massacre, said she "wanted to see the place where my brothers were tortured and kept in solitary confinement."

The bodies of those killed in the massacre were never recovered by their families, and Hafiz Rahayib simply wanted to know: "Where is my brother's grave?"

Children carry pictures of loved ones never met but still remembered.

The heart of the exhibition is a courtyard displaying handicrafts made by the prisoners -- such as pouches made of wool and clothes hangers crafted out of plastic bottles -- as well as unsent letters and photographs of the dead.

Relatives recall gathering outside the gates and clamouring for news of their loved ones, only to be driven away by soldiers.

They brought clothes and food for years, unaware of their loss.

Now, 16 years later, Kermi says it is critical for old wounds to be healed in the courtroom.

"We don't want our enemies to drink from the same bitter cup," he said.

The exhibition opened on Thursday and closes on Saturday. The formal day of remembrance is Friday, with special prayers planned in both Tripoli and second-largest city Benghazi.
