Beirut bombing sparks protests aimed at Syria

BEIRUT -?Protesters burned tires and set up roadblocks around Lebanon on Saturday in a sign of boiling anger over the killings of a top security official and seven others, while Lebanon's prime minister said he suspected a Syrian connection in the bombing.
At a press conference, Prime Minister Najib Mikati?said he suspected the bombing was related to the indictment in August of former minister Michel Samaha, a supporter of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, over a plot allegedly aimed at stoking violence in Lebanon.
"I cannot separate in any way the crime that took place yesterday and the discovery of the conspiracy against Lebanon in August," he said.?
Other?Lebanese politicians have also accused Assad of being behind the attack, deepening fears that Syria's sectarian-tinged civil war is spreading to its neighbor.?
NBC News producer Paul Nassar reported an unusual calm had swept over Beirut.?
"The city is dead, absolutely quiet," Nassar, reporting from Beirut, said. "All the major shopping districts are closed -- this city would usually be brimming with activity, but now, nothing."
Nassar added that the bomb was an especially devastating blow to the city because it came on the cusp of the major Islam holiday Eid, which starts next weekend.
"Hotels that were close to capacity are now looking at 20 percent" of rooms full after tourists scrambled to cancel their reservations, Nassar reported.
In the eastern Bekaa Valley region, the Lebanese army opened fire on a group who were blocking a road to protest the bomb attack, wounding?two people.
"The Lebanese army were trying to open the road and started firing their guns," a witness from the village of Bar Elias, told The Associated Press.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese Cabinet held an emergency meeting as the country's opposition called for Mikati to resign.?
The government declared a national day of mourning for the victims, who included Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, head of the intelligence division of Lebanon's domestic security forces. Dozens were wounded in Friday's blast in Beirut's mainly Christian Achrafieh neighborhood.?
Many observers said the attack appeared to have links to the Syrian civil war, which has been raging for 19 months. Al-Hassan, 47, headed an investigation over the summer that led to the arrest of former Information Minister Michel Samaha, one of Syrian President Bashar Assad's most loyal allies in Lebanon.?
Samaha, who is in custody, is accused of plotting a campaign of bombings and assassinations to spread sectarian violence in Lebanon at Syria's behest. Also indicted in the August sweep was Syrian Brig. Gen. Ali Mamlouk, one of Assad's highest aides.?
Al-Hassan also played a role in the investigation of the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri with a massive truck bomb. A U.N.-backed tribunal has indicted four members of militant group Hezbollah, which along with its allies, now holds a majority in Lebanon's Cabinet. Hezbollah denies involvement in Hariri's killing and has refused to extradite the suspects.?
Al-Hassan's department also had a role in breaking up several Israeli spy rings inside Lebanon over the past few years, Lebanese officials said.?
Lebanon's fractious politics are closely entwined with Syria's. The countries share a web of political and sectarian ties and rivalries, often causing events on one side of the border to echo on the other. Lebanon's opposition is an anti-Syrian bloc, while the prime minister and much of the government are pro-Syrian.?
The civil war in Syria has laid bare Lebanon's sectarian tensions as well.?
Many of Lebanon's Sunni Muslims have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Shiite Muslims have tended to back Assad. Al-Hassan was a Sunni whose stances were widely seen to oppose Syria and Shiite Hezbollah, the country's most powerful ally in Lebanon.?
Lebanon's top Sunni cleric, Grand Mufti Mohammed Rashid Kabbani, condemned the assassination, calling it a "criminal explosion that targets Lebanon and its people." He called for self-restraint saying that "the criminal will get his punishment sooner or later."?
Police and army troops sealed off the site of Friday's blast as military intelligence agents investigated what was the deadliest bombing in Beirut in four years.?
Sharbal Abdo, a Beirut resident who lives down the block from where the car bomb detonated, on Saturday brought his six-year-old son Chris and 12-year-old daughter Jane to see what happened the day before. They were both at school when the blast ripped through the area.?
"They were very afraid yesterday, and cried a lot late into the night," Abdo said. "Today I decided to bring them here and show what happened. They need to face this situation. It may be their future."?
On Friday, protesters in mostly Sunni areas closed roads with burning tires and rocks in Beirut, the southern city of Sidon, the northern city of Tripoli and several towns in the eastern Bekaa Valley.?
The highway linking central Beirut with the city's international airport was closed, as well as the highway that links the capital with Syria, the officials said on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.?
Rafik Khoury, editor of the independent Al-Anwar daily, said the assassination was an attempt to draw Lebanon into the conflict in Syria, which has been the most serious threat to the Assad family's 40-year dynasty.?
"The side that carried the assassination knows the reactions and dangerous repercussions and is betting that it will happen. Strife is wanted in Lebanon," Khoury wrote.?

Sound like a bunch of malarkey? Not so fast.
While pointing fingers, interrupting and smirking are never recommended in a professional setting, job seekers can learn a lot from the candidates' speech and body language, according to Melvin Scales, executive coach and Wake Forest University Schools of Business Assistant Director of Student Career Services.
"Regardless of your political affiliation, the debates are a one-stop shop for observing what body language and speech styles reflect the impression you want to leave with a potential employer," said Scales, who has more than 35 years of combined executive coaching and brand management experience. "Job candidates should seem confident, not cocky. When it comes to composure, practice makes perfect, regardless of the setting."
Given that we only have seven seconds to make a good first impression, it's important to make every second count. Scales said 75 percent of that impression comes from body language such as strong eye contact, a slight smile and a firm handshake; pleasant conversation accounts for the other 25 percent.
At Wake Forest, Scales coaches students to control their body language using a technique he calls "head, shoulders, knees and toes."
Head
? Keep your eyes focused on the interviewer without staring. Blink, but don't wink.
? Smile now and then to assure the interviewer that you understand what is being asked, as well as during your responses. This generates confidence.
? Don't look up or from side to side when responding to a question. Averting your gaze makes you seem less certain, trustworthy and truthful.
Shoulders
? Keep your back straight, head up and with your arms at your side or hands clasped below your waist.
? Minimize the use of your hands during the interview. They should remain below shoulder level at all times.
? When you want to make an emphatic point, lean slightly towards the interviewer without invading his or her space, which is about three feet.
Knees and Toes
? Men should sit with backs straight and feet flat on the floor. Women's legs should be crossed at the ankles underneath the chair.
? If part of the interview is conducted while walking and talking or standing, be careful not to shift your weight or rock.
"While job interviews are hardly the confrontational settings we see in debates, they are a good reminder that talking over others is never okay," said Scales. "Often the most memorable moments of political debates are of what not to do. When job seekers see how distracting taking copius notes, gulping down water and laughing off questions can be, they will be less likely to make those mistakes."

Study succeeds in cutting inappropriate antibiotic prescribing by pediatricians
ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) ? A study involving one of the nation's largest networks of pediatric practices was able to nearly halve the inappropriate use of antibiotics through quarterly monitoring and feedback of the physicians' prescribing patterns. The research, which is being presented at IDWeek, is one of the first to look at an antimicrobial stewardship intervention in the outpatient setting.
Although efforts to cut the overuse of antibiotics have made headway in hospitals, the majority of prescriptions are written by community-based clinicians -- often for pediatric patients with common ailments. "If you really want to impact antibiotic use, you have to do it with outpatient prescribing," said lead researcher Jeffrey Gerber, MD, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "Our message is that targeting common conditions and intervening in the outpatient setting is doable."
Indeed, the study looked at three common respiratory tract infections in children and greatly affected prescribing in a group of practices after only a year. The biggest impact was with inappropriate use of antibiotics for pneumonia, which dropped from 16 percent to just 4 percent.
The findings are among the significant research being discussed at the inaugural IDWeek meeting, taking place through October 21 in San Diego. With the theme Advancing Science, Improving Care, IDWeek features the latest science and bench-to-bedside approaches in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and epidemiology of infectious diseases, including HIV, across the lifespan. More than 1,500 abstracts from scientists in this country and internationally will be highlighted over the conference's five days.
"Improving antibiotic use is a crucial public health goal and necessary given increasing antibiotic resistance," noted Daniel J. Diekema, MD, an IDWeek chair for the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America. "This study shows that the same approaches we use in hospitals can also improve antibiotic use in clinics. The intervention isn't complicated or high-tech, so it should be 'scalable' to large populations, where it could make a big difference in slowing resistance and preventing the complications of inappropriate antibiotic use."
Gerber and his colleagues at Children's Hospital focused on its affiliated primary care network of more than two dozen practices. Eighteen of those pediatric practices agreed to participate, offering a look at 174 clinicians' prescribing habits in urban, suburban and rural communities from the Main Line of Philadelphia to the New Jersey shore. Over nearly three years, that included more than 1.4 million office visits by 185,212 patients.
The practices were randomly divided into two groups and their prescriptions tracked through the network's electronic health record. The researchers reviewed prescribing for sinusitis, Group A strep throat and pneumonia after omitting cases that involved children with chronic medical conditions, antibiotic allergies or antibiotic use during the three months preceding the study period.
The control group was merely told the study was under way. In the intervention group, however, each practice was given a short lunch-hour refresher on the latest prescribing guidelines recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Additionally, each clinician in the intervention group received quarterly one-page updates on his or her prescribing habits. This feedback showed how individuals compared to the guidelines and to others within their own practice, as well as how practices compared to each other. It involved no clinical decision-making support tools.
The initial data showed that about 28 percent of all children inappropriately received a broad-spectrum antibiotic for a targeted condition -- with the variance across practices ranging from 15 percent to 60 percent.
But after the antibiotic primer session and a year of regular prescribing evaluations, clinicians in the intervention group cut their off-guideline use to 14 percent. The control group rate also declined, but only to 23 percent.
There was little change in the already low prescribing of broad-spectrum antibiotics for strep throat. Inappropriate prescribing for sinusitis had already been trending down in both groups, but it dropped by half, to 20 percent, in the practices that had gotten the refresher and regular feedback.
"The impact in the intervention group was much better than we thought it would be," Gerber said. "It shows that getting people up to speed and providing simple reminders are helpful. It also shows that you can leverage electronic health records to put together a relatively low-maintenance system to improve prescribing."
The researchers say they now need to look at the staying power of their effort. Have clinicians continued to be vigilant or returned to old habits? Gerber acknowledges that pediatricians often are pressured by a clock that requires them to see patients quickly and by families that often demand antibiotics when a child is sick. Writing that prescription sometimes seems like the most expeditious solution.
"We need to know what the important piece of our intervention was, whether the education or the feedback reports," Gerber said. "What we're ultimately hoping is that by improving adherence to prescribing guidelines, we changed the level of treatment success while reducing unnecessary exposure to broad-spectrum antibiotics."
