Green Blog: Peeking Into the Sex Lives of Endangered Turtles

Studying any animal in the wild is hard enough, let alone one that spends 30 years at a time out at sea. Because of its ocean-faring lifestyle, scientists know next to nothing about the life style of the critically endangered hawksbill sea turtle, save for the fleeting observations they make when female turtles come to beaches to lay their eggs.

Genetics, however, is giving researchers a glimpse into the sex lives of these elusive creatures ? and insight into their preservation.

?People have looked at turtle mating systems before, but not at any depth,? said David S. Richardson, a molecular ecologist at the University of East Anglia in Britain. ?The trouble is that it?s very hard because most of what happens happens far out at sea.?

Hawksbill turtles live in warm waters throughout the world, starting their lives as hatchlings on tropical shores. Female turtles lay up to five clutches of around 200 eggs every three years. Once the baby turtles break free of their sandy cradles, only the females will ever return to dry land. Sometimes, that first return visit takes three decades or more.

As for what happens in between, researchers could only guess at whether females mate with single or multiple males ? whether a handful opportunistic alpha males surround beaches to monopolize mating, or males compete for females that then chose the most robust candidate. ?All we see is the females coming and laying nests,? Dr. Richardson said.

Dr. Richardson, working with Karl Phillips, a doctoral candidate, and other colleagues, decided to pull back the curtain on the turtles? mating patterns by reconstructing paternal genotypes. Comparing DNA between mother and offspring can provide roundabout insights into a father?s genetic identify. To fill in the missing male piece, the researchers took genetic samples from 53 females and 1,600 hatchlings from 85 nests from the Seychelles, which lie in the Indian Ocean off East Africa.

Genetic material in hand, they used a powerful microsatellite array ? an analysis of unique repeating sequences of DNA ? to identify the number of males that sired the females? young.

Surprisingly, the researchers found that more than 90 percent of females mated with a single male, and the remaining four females mated with just two males each, they report in the journal Molecular Ecology.

Over all, the researchers determined that 47 males fathered the baby turtles, and none of them mated with more than one female that visited the beach. Comparing the males? genetics revealed no patterns indicating that females choose the most genetically impressive or compatible mates, suggesting that females may just mate with the first male that turns up when the time is right.

?We were very surprised at this level of monogamy,? Dr. Richardson said. ?To put it mildly, monogamy is the exception, not the rule, in the animal world.?

The females achieved this reproductive feat with sperm storage, a trick that many animal species rely upon in which females store sperm after mating for future fertilization. In the case of the hawksbill turtles, females store sperm for up to 75 days, an impressive length of time, to make it last throughout the duration of their egg-laying period.

By storing enough sperm to get through a full breeding season, females can avoid the hassle of dealing with other males after that first encounter. ?Females separate having to mate with having to fertilize eggs in space and time,? Dr. Richardson said. ?Basically, they can get on with it and lay their eggs in peace.?

Beyond shedding light on fundamental turtle biology, the findings also present good news for conservation. In follow-up work in which they examined mating patterns across multiple years, the researchers found evidence suggesting that females mate with new males each reproductive season.

Because every female mates with a different male and switches males between years, the researchers can safely assume that male populations are plentiful, at least in the Seychelles.

They also found a significant amount of genetic diversity within their samples, which gives animal populations the evolutionary flexibility to respond to new environmental challenges, such as disease.

Like most sea turtle species, hawksbill turtles are hunted around the world for their shells and meat, and to poach their eggs. Sea turtles become entangled in pollution or snared by fishing lines, and coastal development destroys their nesting habitat.

As a result, hawksbills have declined from historic numbers by an estimated 80 percent. But in the Seychelles, at least, populations seem to be on the rise.

?Combined with our estimate that there are lots of genetically viable males out there, hawksbill turtles may actually be in a better place than we thought,? Dr Richardson said.

Lensbaby Sweet 35 Optic

The Lensbaby Sweet 35 Optic ($180 direct) is the widest available lens for the Lensbaby system. It produces a 35mm field of view on full-frame cameras, and is compatible with most Lensbaby lens bodies that support the optic swap system. These include the Muse and Composer Pro. It will fit in the Spark, but due to the weight of the optic it is not something that Lensbaby recommends you do?the Spark's plastic construction just isn't up to the task.

The Sweet 35 is like other Lensbaby lenses in that it is able to capture a sharp "sweet spot" of focus, surrounded by blur. When used in conjunction with the tilting mechanism of the Muse or Composer Pro, this spot can be moved around your frame, allowing you to focus on a subject at the edge or corner while leaving the rest of the frame blurry.

It costs twice as much as the standard Double Glass Optic, but offers some improvements to justify that. The internal aperture features a 12-blade design, varying from f/2.5 all the way down to f/22, so you can quickly adjust it. Stopping down a bit increases the size of the sweet spot. To do the same with a standard Lensbaby optic you'll have to use a magnetic wand to remove and insert aperture discs into the lens?this doesn?t lend itself for quick changes in the field. The lens design is also more refined?the Double Glass Optic is constructed from two glass elements, while the Sweet 35 uses four elements arranged in three groups. This improves image quality, but doesn't take away from the dreamy image quality that the Lensbaby system is able to capture.

If you're a Muse shooter and are interested in the Sweet 35, you may want to try it out before purchasing. Adjusting the aperture while holding the Muse in the desired position is a little bit tricky, and you'll likely have to recompose your shot after adjusting the aperture. Because of this, I found the Sweet 35 to be much more enjoyable to shoot with when mounted in the Composer Pro. If you are serious about getting a Sweet 35, you may want to buy it bundled with the Composer Pro if you are currently shooting with a Muse?you'll likely enjoy shooting with that combination, and you'll be able to use the current Lensbaby optics in the Composer Pro, just as you would in the Muse.?

Germany striker Klose out for up to 2 months

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) -Germany striker Miroslav Klose is likely to be out for about two months with a knee injury and will miss his country's World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan in March.

The German Football Federation says Klose will not be available for the two matches on March 22 and March 26.

Klose underwent tests in Munich ahead of Germany's friendly against France that found the Lazio striker had sustained a partially torn outer ligament in his right knee during his side's Serie A loss at Genoa on Sunday.

The 34-year-old veteran will be replaced by Mario Gomez in Wednesday's friendly in Paris. Gomez has not been able to secure a place in Bayern Munich's starting 11 since coming back from ankle surgery in November.

Dinosaur Footprints Lifted from NASA's Backyard

A chunk of stone bearing dinosaur footprints has been carefully lifted from the grounds of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., scientists report.

The dino tracks, thought to have been left by three separate beasts more than 100 million years ago, were discovered by amateur paleontologist Ray Stanford in August 2012.

The feature that first caught Stanford's eye was a dinner-plate-sized footprint of a nodosaur, a tanklike dinosaur studded with bony protuberances that roamed the area about 110 million years ago during the Cretaceous period (the period from 145 million to 65 million years ago that was the end of the Mesozoic Era). This particular lumbering leaf-eater must have been moving quickly across the prehistoric mud, as its heel did not sink deeply into the ground.

A closer look at the site revealed two more prints. Stephen Godfrey, a paleontology curator at the Calvert Marine Museum, who was contracted to preserve the find, said he suspects one was left by an ornithopod, possibly from the iguanodontid family, which were large vegetarian dinosaurs with birdlike, three-toed feet that walked on its hind legs. Another smaller footprint found superimposed over the nodosaur track is thought to be from a baby nodosaur, perhaps trying to catch up to its parent, according to a statement from NASA. The stretch of ground containing the prints measured about 7 feet long and 3 feet across at its widest point (2 meters by 0.9 meters). After making a silicon-rubber cast of the dino tracks, the team covered the find in plaster-soaked burlap, much like an orthopedic cast, to reinforce the slab and protect it from damage during the big move. Altogether, the stone slab, the protective jacket and surrounding soil weighed about 3,000 pounds (1,360 kilograms), and it was successfully pulled out of the ground last month.

For now, the prints are being stored at Goddard until further scientific study is possible. The wonder of the discovery has not been lost on space scientists at Goddard, who often find themselves studying starlight as old as the dinosaurs.

"One of the amazing aspects of this find is that some of the starlight now seen in the night sky by astronomers was created in far-distant galaxies when these dinosaurs were walking on mud flats in Cretaceous Maryland where Goddard is now located," Jim Garvin, Goddard's chief scientist, said in a statement. "That starlight (from within the Virgo Supercluster) is only now reaching Earth after having traveled through deep space for 100 million years."
