Childhood Obesity Programs To Get More Federal and Private Dollars

I am guessing that this years' attack on parents and children is going to be about obesity.? The new Federal funding money trough.

Childhood Obesity Programs To Get More Federal and Private Dollars, Experts Say

Organizations seeking funding for obesity prevention can expect support from federal sources, but should also pay attention to private opportunities, say grants analysts Ray Sweeney, with Federal & Foundation Funding Report, and Frank Klimko, with Children & Youth Funding Report and Private Grants Alert.
Current opportunities in these grant services are available at no charge from our website. To download a recent issue, click here to visit our site or call 1-800-666-6380.

The two analysts offered expert insights and advice June 21 to a national audience attending an audio conference on "Finding New Funding to Fight Childhood Obesity".

The analysts say a significant amount of obesity program dollars will come from the federal government this year because it is following the Obama administration's "Let's Move!" initiative, an effort aimed at curbing childhood obesity. Federal officials have already created several interagency committees to address the childhood obesity issue and are asking state and local governments to do the same.

Outside the Box

Sticking to the theme of the audio conference, Klimko urged listeners to "look to beyond the obvious" in order to find other federal programs capable of addressing childhood obesity, such as those supporting neighborhood walkability (i.e., making communities more pedestrian-friendly) or livability. He cites programs like the National Endowment for the Arts' "Our Town" initiative, which provides funding to improve arts corridors and walkability.

Sweeney cites HUD's "Choice Neighborhoods" program as another example of an "outside the box" federal effort that funds improvements in local neighborhoods, linking housing, transportation and childhood nutrition.
Sweeney says community organizations with obesity programs should explore all possible partnership opportunities, including those involving research and demonstration projects. He advises groups seeking funding for childhood obesity programs to reach out to local colleges and universities, and inquire about partnering on USDA's Agriculture and Food Research Initiative - a program that funds research and demonstration efforts aimed at reducing obesity.

Private Giving

Klimko notes a number of private funders now have robust obesity prevention efforts underway, including well-known organizations like the Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) Foundation, as well as lesser-known funders like the Saucony Run for Good Foundation. He says RWJ is now accepting applications for its seventh round of grants in the "Healthy Eating Research: Building Evidence to Prevent Childhood Obesity" program, with awards reaching $170,000 each. Saucony is providing nonprofits with funding to support youth running and fitness programs.

Biggest Mac: McDonald's at Olympics is the biggest

(AP) ? London's sprawling Olympic Park comes with a supersized McDonald's.

The fast-food giant says its flagship restaurant at the park will be its biggest, busiest and most sustainable, with three-quarters of the furniture and fittings set to be reused after the games.

But despite complaints by British doctors, the food choices will largely be the same as McDonald's fare around the world.

McDonald's is the sole restaurant allowed to sell brand-name food at the London Games. It will run four outlets at the venue, including a flagship that seats 1,500 people. It expects to serve up to 14,000 people a day.

The Academy of Royal Medical Colleges recently said having McDonald's sponsor the Olympics sends the wrong message in Britain, which is battling increasing obesity.

Sister Wives' Kody Brown: I'm Not a Womanizer!

Sister Wives' Kody Brown may have four wives and 17 kids, but that does not make the polygamist reality TV star a womanizer, he insists.

In a new tell-all interview with NBC News' Natalie Morales, Kody and wives Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn were grilled about their lifestyle.

Their new book, Becoming Sister Wives, also details much of the same material, notably Kody's past and his many girlfriends in high school.

Some viewers might say that's not particularly surprising, considering he now has four wives (he's only legally married to his first wife, Meri).

Kody explained in the interview with Morales that when he was 14, he was trying to figure out his life as a wild boy, before his "calling."

His calling as a spiritual person, that is.

Natalie's response? "So it wasn't that you chose religion to be a womanizer?" Incredulous and stunned, Kody replied, "Is that what you think I am, a womanizer?"

He went on to defend himself, insisting that he had "done the emotional work" in his relationships and "shouldered their needs as much as I could."

He insists, "I was never womanizing. ... This is NOT an open marriage."

Is it, though? No doubt he cares for each, but is religion just providing cover for him to pursue new women? Wonder what Meri & Co. think deep down.

Illinois Football Recruiting: DT Bryce Douglas Accepts Scholarship Offer

Plainfield Central defensive tackle Bryce Douglas is following in his father's footsteps. On Friday, the incoming high school senior accepted an offer to spend his college years in Champaign playing for the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Douglas is 6-foot-2, 315 lbs. He also had an offer from Central Michigan and received interest from Boston College, Northwestern and Purdue.

Douglas' father Bruce is former Illinois basketball player. The defensive tackle was in Champaign for a lineman camp. He received an offer after the camp and immediately accepted.

Illinois currently has the 21st best recruiting class in the country according the Rivals. Douglas sounds like a kid who wanted to be in Champaign all along.

"I've been around Illinois for as long as I can remember," Bryce Douglas said. "I spent so much time at games and at different events at Illinois it just feels like home to me. Illinois was the one offer I was really hoping for, and to get that offer just blows me away. Both of my parents went to Illinois, and now I can follow in my parents' footsteps at Illinois."
